Want #2.. male or female?

Basenji Talk
  • thank you both for your help! i will eventually get another B so this is very useful information!

  • I would concur with what these ladies said. Ideally, one of each sex works best.

  • I adopted a rescue female for my boy as a playmate. They were both close to the same age and did great. They were close to a year and a half when I did this.

I have also (she passed) added a puppy (boy) to my male's life and he is now 6. They are great together as well. The older one takes care of the younger one. Their play levels are different, but the relationship is great as well.

It is truely and exciting experience to get to know the opposite sex of this breed. They are a little different in their behaviors. The girls are a little more growly to talk with other dogs. Boys together tend to box more and do well together with all other dogs.

Keep us posted on what you decide!! Your basenji will be so happy with a buddy female or male…..

  • It is usually safer to get an opposite sex playmate, but 2 males that like each other is really great too. I have 3, 2 males and a female, my older male is alpha, but both he and Nicky (girrrrl) liked Eddie when we got him, he just slid smoothly into the household. We recently found a home for a male basenji-JRT mix (99% basenji) with a 12 year old intact male basenji, and they are doing great against all odds. With basenjis, rules are made to be broken!

That is true… but the law of averages say male/female.....

  • I've noticed that the females tend to be bossier, such as harassing the others around.

Could be why Jazz is known around here as Queen Bitch, or Champion Bitch.
    ;)

  • Very well put. :) I'm almost scared to get a female 'cuz i love my laid back boys

Of course she was there first…

  • there is nothing wrong with having A girl with your boys. It really is a realm of different behaviors. A little more snuggly with looks of doting love in their eyes. A bit more control on home turf (whether at the park or at home). The females like to break up the boy boxing, but play too. They seem to be more growly vocal than the boys as well.

I have loved all of the female basenjis I have met.

The only thing I wouldnt recommend is having multiple females together unless you have a lot of patience or they are mom and daughter or litter mates.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • Really? The females are more snuggly? I was thinking the males were far the more loving dog. Well, when my puppies get older than I guess we'll have to decide if we want a new girl or boy. I think that I would definitely have to stop at three Basenji's for quite a while though for my hands will be quite full.

If your boys are not neutered, think twice about bring in a girl unless spayed… the month that they are in season can be the longest month of your life!

    :D :D :D :D I can't even imagine that!

  • I love my two boys to death and they both love to sit on top of me on the couch and be petted and loved on….but a girl....well it is just different.

Can anyone else explain this better? It is just different.

  • I'm also thinking of getting my #2 but it does seem males are more available at least as rescue is concerned. I don't want to take a chance at bringing another male B if it's going to be an issue, so I'm concerned about this as well. Thanks for all the great advise.

  • boys together are super easy! my adult male has taken the boy puppy under his wing? and treats him like he is a baby. they are great!

  • Topper was about 7 when we adopted Eddie, then almost 3 and still intact. Both Nicky (girl) and Topper took to Eddie and liked him a lot, the boys have a very special bond. Ed and Nicky are "joined at the hip" and frequently together. Topper is very Alpha, and Ed is a bit as well,(we say that Eddie is Topper's "wing man") but their personailties fit together perfectly. 2 boys who like each other is very easy, a boy and girl who don't particularly like each other can be difficult. A lot depends on the personality of the individual dogs, IMHO, as much as the sex.

  • It does depend on the dogs' individual personalities. IMO dogs will fight, bitches will fight-but a dog and a bitch are less likely to fight.

  • Actually typically girls are more assertive - neutered males are more mellow. Basenji's as a pack - are typically lead by a matriarch. Most of the alpha's are female.

Adding a female to your 3 males that already get along could change the dynamics as she may try to supplant you as the leader.

RE: mother daughter and sisters - geez - the line I ALWAYS use for people who keep 2 females is the issue is not that they get along but what will you do when they don't. I have had both of those female combinations that worked - until it didn't - it's unpleasant when it doesn't.

  • My Mother and Daughters also worked (knock on wood)…..

@eeeefarm said in Can a male Basenji live with another male dog?: Tamu was considerate of Lady when she started to fail, The Duchess, a bitch bred by us, went to live with a another Basenji bitch. When Tok started to fail, the Duchess felt it her duty to feed her and went miles out over the fields, hunting. She brought back flea-ridden rabbits on an almost daily basis which she gently nosed towards the aging Tok. While she appreciated the deed, their owner didn't like the choice of diet which the Duchess provided for her friend. She was utterly devastated when finally Tok crossed the Bridge at 15 +

@MacPack: I'll check it out. My DH Donald takes most of our photos and some sites claim ownership of all photos posted there so he is leery. Sounds easy enough, if I can e-mail photos there, then figure how to get them from there to here, haha! This site actually does that, but since the photos aren't actually physically posted here (uploaded to this site) , but are hot linked, I am not sure how they can be "claimed". That clause gave me pause as well…....and apparently also applies to what is written. It would make for an interesting legal case, for sure, if someone inadvertently posted copywritten material. Of for that matter if the material was posted elsewhere without attribution or with false attribution. You might also check with your local humane society animal shelter - the one here offers various classes (regular obedience plus good citizen plus plus) and you can take them at your own pace though I'm not sure how that works (I just got the notice). I buy most of my toys online since the stores around here cater to the hunting dogs. Don't forget to check Amazon.com too - they have a wide selection.

well then, gender aside, get a dog you feel comfortable with, I went into a house full of boy dogs and only one girl, my Bindi, who was taking them down and being really playful but getting her point across, like have only older brothers to look up to, the younger sister will try her hardest to be as big and bad as her older brothers :3 I think it's cute and endearing <3 I think that's why I liked Bindi, she's got spunk! ~Kat
