Could moose be a basenji?

  • Hello I have a wonderful dog who we rescued. His name is moose. I have been trying to figure out what he is and thought I would ask y’all. He is on the larger side at 46lb and to the tips of his ears is 24 inches. He loves to run and chase and sometimes can get quite mouthy. He is quite vocal and will whine and yowle when being played with. He will eat anything he can get his mouth on no matter if it’s food or not. He loves people and most other dogs and constantly wants your attention. He is also wicked smart and very quick to pick up on training but doesn’t always want to listen to what you tell him to do.
    Here are some photos. I would love to hear what y’all think!!11_1598557466655_28B291C1-59D8-4451-9063-F886AF36129F.jpeg 10_1598557466655_B6C156B4-D087-47DA-BD0A-8E67DA105F8A.jpeg 9_1598557466655_EBB6D053-55F4-4394-95E8-F66954FFFC0F.jpeg 8_1598557466655_D8926BCD-2197-452A-8B21-9EAD18C407C7.jpeg 7_1598557466655_92905449-BD68-4BF5-9537-1583DC4095C3.jpeg 6_1598557466655_BAE9379C-5FE2-4DD9-BB51-62F1412718C2.jpeg 5_1598557466655_69F2B313-195E-4B28-B7D6-5047BDCCCAF0.jpeg 4_1598557466655_A1229042-F8A3-4EC9-B396-6C1FECC53519.jpeg 3_1598557466655_5E516D47-8CB7-4F3D-805E-D8A92BA26E90.jpeg 2_1598557466655_D76D9B5D-A111-4F93-9AC6-72A5F26B27D3.jpeg 1_1598557466655_5D7455C0-AB70-4F35-AC38-88591A03D033.jpeg 0_1598557466654_3DC2CAC8-6090-4D64-99AE-A66B6C3AEAB6.jpeg

  • @moosemom He looks really adorable whatever her heritage. I think "Moose" is a good name for him. I love the last pic where he cocks his head---my basenji does this at me. He looks to me like he has basenji markings, but he may have another heritage in there with his size. Whatever, he sure is cute.

  • When you are talking about the height of a dog, the measurement is taken from the floor to the "withers" (top of the shoulder blades), kind of his back just at the base of his neck. The average male Basenji should be 17 inches there.
Moose is a cool looking dog, might have some Basenji there. What does he think of the rain? Most Basenjis hate it.

  • @giza1 he absolutely hates it

Moose is a “cool” looking dog - he is adorable. He appears to be part basenji to me. Curious to hear about his characteristics and any unusual behaviors. You are both so lucky to have found each other. Congratulations! 🐾❤️🐕

  • I think he looks like he has Australian Cattle Dog in him. They are wicked smart dogs.
No matter what, he is very handsome and looks like a lot of fun. Enjoy!

  • Oh, I love Moose's face! He is just beautiful. He looks Basenji-ish to me, but whatever he is, you two are going to have SO much fun and love together!!!!!

No idea, sometimes with mixes it's so hard to tell what the parentage is. I do think that your dog's head is a bit more refined than many of the pit mixes i've seen.

The rescue girl who would get out of the invisible fence and had a high prey drive also had a thing for a bull. She was lure coursing near Ft. Worth TX and the field was near where the cattle was fenced in at. She went crazy and wanted to go after this huge steer/bull through the fence. I believe it was a TX Longhorn. One kick from him and she would have been history! Jennifer

Put a bell on his collar. :) Ours will start a 500, or bring us a ball to throw… or they start wrestling with each other. During nice weather, we take them outside. Helps A LOT.

I'm originally from California so that is where we got them. I will have to ask my mom if she knows anything about their breeding. They were both over a year old when they came to us. The male was an escaper. My parents had to add an extention on our 6 ft wall because he would jump it. Even then he found a way to get out. We couldnt figure it out for the longest time how he did it. He had found a window upstairs that didn't latch, he would nose it open get on the roof then jump to the wall and from the wall to the ground. The male in pic is prob just sniffing We were working on that bedroom so there were alot of new scents. I cant recall him ever barooing. The female though was very vocal. After talking to my mom, I don't have any more info. Both dogs were given up by their owners because they became to much for them to handle. Alphy the male was a handful being an escaper, Lady was a great counter surfer. Alphy liked all dogs and people. Lady only liked people. But other than that they were sweet and loving dogs.

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.
