Kwame finds his voice

Basenji Talk
  • We've never been able to figure just what causes them to yodel, Itty Bitty and Mr Baroo both sound off when they are either happy or very excited, but our new boy Buddy, seems to be almost voiceless. The ony sound he makes is at the door when he feels he has been banished to the yard for too long a period, a very sad whine. Hopefully he will begin to respond to Bitty and Baroo when they become vocally happy.

  • I usually get yodels when my guy is anticipating something he likes and is getting impatient. The longer the delay, the more likely I get a "baroo" when I finally give him what he wants…...in most cases, food. :) I got my previous boy to start singing by making noises through an empty paper towel roller. He did more howling than barooing, but it certainly got him going. One of my girls would start up when I played at "threatening" her by holding my hands just over her head as if I was going to grab her. Didn't always produce results, but sometimes a growly yodel would be forthcoming. Different things work for different dogs.....

  • Malaika nearly always yodels when she's playing with a toy on the settee, she seems to like it when it falls off on the floor and stands above it and yodels.
Debra will try to get a vid

  • Oh gosh how cute.. the yodel of "great toy defeater." I am envious. Cara makes tons of musical yawns, not not a single yodel.

  • Debra, i love the musical yawns, Malaika does them but Kwame doesn't.

  • Jenga and Rudy are both quiet dogs when it comes to barooing. I have only occasionally heard a half-hearted baroo as a greeting from Jenga. However, i am sure that however developed the cartoon Tasmanian Devil was the owner of B like Rudy. He makes the biggest noises I have ever heard when trying to shoo Jenga out the space he consider to be his alone. Especially in the middle of the night as Jenga tries to migrate higher up on the bed! It can be quite alarming but he is sure all show.

  • My guy howls in his sleep sometimes. Really something to see (and hear) because he truly is asleep when he does it. More often, he will give little yips and move his legs. Never quite sure if he is chasing something or something is chasing him. And then there are the growls…....:)

  • Here is a video we made to see what happens when Kwame is left on his own. I wish to point out that he is rarely left and if Malaika is with him then usualy he is ok. He is a real baby though and sometimes start with the howling if he even thinks we have gone out, ie in another room.

  • Oh my kwame! What a voice..lol, that's certainly one of displeasure. I wonder if that's what Oakley sounds like when I'm gone?!

  • Shelly I was rolling, the dogs all over my chair trying to see what was making that noise. WONDERFUL! :)

  • Great video. He can certainly announce himself!!

  • What a voice! He is clearly making his displeasure known. I know it makes us all giggle, but you are right to wonder if those above and below you also think how cute it is.

Wouldn't feel bad about the behavior of your basenji. I got mine six years ago and he acts a lot like yours. I kennel trained him and when I have company he goes in the kennel till he settles down. When I let him out I just tell people to be still till he checks them all out then he is fine. A lot of times he acts like he is going to attack me if he doesn't get his way vicious snarls and all, but I have learned it is just that an act . He also acted vicious around other dogs but after introducing them properly he gets along great. We have recently got him a new basenji mixed sister to play with, after the snarls and viciousness he loves her very much. I wouldn't be afraid to rehome your basenji, it at least give someone a chance to see what they can do.

Thank you for thinking of the puppy's needs. Please, contact the breeder first if you signed a contract. Responsible breeders have contracts, nearly all requiring you contact them if things don't work out. They may have other homes waiting already. If the breeder sold you the puppy without a contract, then there are a few here looking for a puppy that might be interested. Make sure you get references and vet references so that your puppy goes to a home, not someone wanting to use him for breeding in some puppymill. If you can't find a good home and you are willing to place without being paid, BRAT can be helpful in screening and getting into a good home in most cases. California has a separate basenji rescue also... http://www.basenjirescue.com/ ... however, I have no idea if they do fanconi testing. If your pup does not have clear parents, or at least one clear, please get him tested before you place him. A home getting a dog with a genetic disorder is more likely to abandon it if they don't know upfront what they are getting. If you have the parents' registration numbers or names, it is easy to verify if they were tested.

@Kipawa: Does this mean that you are thinking of breeding in the future? Hi Fran! "Apollo", as we are possibly going to use as his call name…will be a show dog. Me and Sarah will not be the ones showing him at this time, Therese is going to do it for us. We haven't yet worked out all the details but he will be allowed to continue in Kevin and Therese's breeding program. Basenjis are very special to us and we are excited to be a bigger part of Kevin and Therese's "family". Unfortunately at this point we are still waiting to find out which boy it will be...has to be a good fit all-around. There has been talk of possibly getting one of the "men in black" boys Therese will be getting from Lisa in CA. The waiting is so hard! I hope everyday reveals improvement for Darrel. Give Kipawa a huge B hug from us.

Buddy barooos really loud at people in the dog park, running up to them sometimes with a tennis ball in his mouth that he stole from another dog. He's the dog park entertainer. He'll also barooo at people that we pass on walks which sometimes startles them. These 2 little girls playing their front yard got baroo'd at and they said "what's that"?
