Basenji coloring question..

Basenji Talk
  • I have one male basenji now. He is one yr old and I am looking for him a companion at home. I want a red/white female and have found one, but her mother is trindle and her father is red/white. She is red, white, with a little black on her face and back right now. The breeder said she will be fully red/white as she grows up, can anyone explain the coloring geneology to me please thanks!

  • @lakers13:

She is red, white, with a little black on her face and back right now. !

I am not able to visualize this. Can you please post a picture?

The black on the face is what we refer to as black masking. Very common in Basenjis that have Tri or Black in the pedigree, this 99.9% of the time fades by the time they are 6 months old. And by "back" do you mean the tail? That usually stays and says they carry the Tri gene. In time, over the years, that can also fade. If by "back" you mean like a dorsal stripe, I would venture to say it is not really black, but a deeper shade of red, that will also fade with age. The breeder is correct that most all of it will fade with age.

Who is the breeder if you care to share? Many of us are related by our Basenjis.

  • Because red and white basenjis are genetically sables, they can have black hairs mixed in with the red usually along the spine or tail and much more common in tri carriers. In my first litter, I had one pup who had black hairs on her back for several months before they faded.

  • Here's the way I colored mine

  • LMFAO @ Barklessdog. That is wicked!!

  • I love it, Barklessdog!!

  • Barklessdog gets a sticker for staying inside the lines!!!!

  • @Barklessdog, PRICELESS! :)

  • That's a riot Barklessdog! Very revealing also that you colored your basenji in such a primitive way. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they were somehow related to the long extinct types.

  • LOL so i was reading away and then got to the drawing. hahaha! :)

  • Baroooooooo - LOL :D

  • First I would suggest that if you don't trust the breeder to explain it to you, you need to perhaps work on a bit better relationship there. Or find a breeder who has the time, knowledge and interest in doing so. The breeder should always be your first line of information. :)

Second I would suggest that while I myself prefer the red and whites, it isn't how I could choose a dog for a pet. If the dark remaining is a deal breaker, perhaps someone here can suggest a breeder with pups that would fit.

Third, gets pictures. We love pictures.

Fourth, BAD BARKLESS! Do you know how hard it is to get coffee off the keyboard and monitor? ROFLMAO.

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Food aggression in dogs is normal. You have to train them to not be, and no stranger should try to take. Heck you shouldn't unless it is something dangerous. Do you have any idea where the guy got the dog from? Perhaps its breeder might help you with training. Do you know if perhaps the exgirlfriend wanted the dog and he took it for spite? http://k9deb.com/foodguar.htm

Yeah, it is a hairless kitten (not very cute in the pic though) He liked to unroll Squiggys tail and watch it roll up again. I will try and take some better pictures this weekend.
