Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • haha….I gave my B a bath last night. I think there was more water on me than in the tub at the end. Good luck!

  • I would get itchy with my boy basenji occassionally because of his short coat. I didn't have to bathe him to stop the itching, I learned to wipe him down after walks with a warm damp towel. That seemed to do the trick and then I didn't have to bathe him nearly as much.

That is a good point, Lisa. I think the same objective could be reached with a wipe down. Chilli…I think bathing the dog two times a week might be drying out her coat and making the problem worse. My Bs only get washed before a show...or if they get untolerably dirty/stinky. That adds up to about three baths a year per dog.

I think a lot of how itchy, or pokey the dog is depends on their coat texture. We only have one that has that super short 'pokey' coat that makes me itchy. The rest range from a little longer, yet smooth...to downright soft.

  • I would agree, twice a week seems like a lot. You may want to try to "wash" without soap. I've been known to do that. And wiping down with a wet washcloth.

  • Oh wow, all this talk about giving baths is like waking me up. Our other 2 dogs are a 11 yo Jindo and a 9 yo Shiba Inu, both are like Basenji's in that they clean themselves like cats, in fact we hav had both since they were not quite 2 years old and have never given either a bath. They have never smelled the least bit 'doggy' even when coming in out of the rain. So, now I find that the Itty Bitty One is supposed to be given a bath even with her extremely short coat? What a disappointment, lol.

  • I have not given mine a bath in over a year… and only the ones that I would be showing get regular baths. I don't think there is anything that says you have to give baths?.... Mine older kids are lucky if they do get a bath once a year...ggg.. and usually that is the late spring/early summer when they are blowing coat, as the warm water will help get rid of dead hairs along with brushing them.

  • i think we've bathe her enough times the last 10months…we might think about stopping that. i think her coat might be in that range of 'pokey'. any suggestions on what shampoo to use? but will definitely reduce the amount of bathing time.

  • i only use neutral soap, think its okay? and sometimes an antiflees soap. am i right? and the baths are every 2 months or soo.

  • I think when you live in the tropics you end up bathing them more often. The heat and humidity makes even the cleanest basenji stincky. Also, the city is not as clean and he gets very dirty just from our regular walks. he sleeps on my bed so I can't have dirty and stincky. I bathe him about every month and half or two months…

  • Doggy diapers are great. I got one from Petland when Becca came into heat. It is great cause you can put panty-liners in there and then just change them at least once a day. That way you don't have to wash the diaper all the time. She was pretty good with leaving it on and not chewing it.

And just because she can "chew" on the other side, food stuffs and bacteria can still get in through the bad tooth. Honestly, not something to put off….. the sooner the better

I know you can't know if she was weaned too early, but I have seen other dogs "comfort suckle" their toes or the ear tips of another dog. Does she make nursing motions with her mouth and tongue when falling asleep? We had an orphan calf (years ago) that would seek out the first 2 fingers on any available hand to calm/comfort himself. He did this well into adult hood.

@basi: This is what I liked about the German system and many other countries in europe, being that all dogs have to be tested before they can be bred from. @tanza: Is the DNA Fanconi test reconized as a required test in those countries in Europe that require pre-testing? And it is really no different here… most have or are testing, but there are still people that do not and still have their heads in the sand about testing... I wish that all testing was public knowledge like the Fanconi test.... like hips, eyes, etc... Following more in depth from Basi, she is also meaning that in Germany breeders will recieve VERY hefty fines for breeding without the proper testing and permissions from the breed club. They can have their kennel license (of sorts) revoked, be denied from entering shows and registering dogs of their breeding or from other breeders). A dog has to be of a certain age, and received a set amount of show awards before it can be entered into the breeding permissions exam. Then a actual show judge and member of the breed club evaluate the dogs to be entered into the stud books.

I got worried giving kiro so many bones, so i would take lots of old shoe laces and tie them in her crate on the side.ONe big sting with tons of THICK knots and let her pull it off and that kept her busy. You just have to make sure they wont swallow it. (she didnt) and make the knots big and thick. she loved the challenge of getting them off the side of her crate. it helps if your worried about to many bones…..
