Hip Question

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I have a question about Tobias' back right hip. It looks to be a dimple, it does not bother him, he in no way favors that side, but visually it is very noticeable and I'm concerened that it might be something serious. Any info??

  • Can you send a pic?

  • Sure, I may have to send it to your personal e-mail, lets see if I have one, if not I'll take one and get it to you. It just showed up a week or so ago.

  • I have fianally learned how to do this…so here is a pic that everyone can see. Any idea on what this could be?

It does not bother him, but it is still there after a couple of weeks, vet says x-rays are coming, but if it causes no pain or tenderness…he is unsure of what to do.

  • I am sorry I didn't get back to you about that barkless! I can't really see much…if it is just on one side, it could be a muscle knot? One time Querk had a dip like that on his thigh, and within a few days it went away. I really think if it was hip related that you would see him acting in pain, before you would see a physical change in his structure.

I think if he was my dog, I wouldn't even worry about it until he started acting like it hurt. Because, even if it is hip dysplasia, there isn't a thing you can do about it except for adding some food supplements once he starts having some pain.

Now if he is limping, or hopping..it might we worth it to do the xrays...but if not, I would just wait and see....hope that helps some...

  • Thank you..again! Yeah, it doesn't bother him a bit. It is kinda hard to see, just a dip at the top of his hip. I'll wait it out.:)

Basenjis are unbelievably tough, my boy Sober injured a rear leg two years ago. We took him to the vet thinking soft tissue injury but the vet felt the knee had been injured. We went to an ortho vet top guy in the area who recommend surgery and reconstruction of the leg. He said he would never move correctly again and the surgery could cause other issues in his gait that could still put pressure on the other leg. We actually considered amputation. I have seen dogs recover and adapt so quickly when loosing a leg that it seemed at 8 years old (at the time) rather than months of rehab and pain it would be a better option for him. We brought him home and started making arrangements to consult another ortho surgeon outside our area for a second opinion. We noticed he seemed better, so we waited and watched letting him decide when he was okay or not to run or play. He is perfectly fine now. Within a couple months of quiet time he regained full use, he has not since limped or had any pain issues, he runs and plays with the young dogs with no problems, he is 10 now and doing great. Moose may surprise you and be just fine, it will just take time. Hug the boy for us and we are so glad he is okay. It says alot that he found his way home, you must be a really great basenji mom, but then we suspected that. Therese and Kevin

Who would have thought that worms were so interesting. My farm vet insists that dogs be wormed monthly but mine are on a weekly homeopathic wormer. I'm so pleased that Nahla has got rid of hers. And i accept what others have said about the possibility of a pup womitting up a worming tablet.

Puppies usually "blow" their baby coat after teething and the color fo the coat will change at time…. So yes their coats to change, but not a lot... just like some pedigrees have black masking aroung the face (muzzle and eyes) that will fade with age. Also on Basenjis, the white never changes size... so a big white spot will be much smaller when full grown. Looking at the picture of your Kona, I would say that the white between his eyes was almost the entire area between the eyes when born
