Fanconi Question

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I want to know if there is any difference in getting a puppy that is a carrier and one that is clear. I do not plan on doing any breeding. I just want a great family pet. This is all new to me and I just want to make sure I make the right decision

  • My understanding is… if you are just looking for a family pet it doesn't matter.
If your dog is a carrier, they won't {shouldn't ?}GET Fanconi, but may pass it on if bred.
If they're clear, then they won't {shouldn't?} get it OR pass it on if bred.

So, either way you're okay. You will want to avoid, if possible, getting one that tested "affected" or "possibly affected".

    Good Luck!

That is correct. Only dogs that test as "probably affected" should develop Fanconi. All other dogs should not develop the disease; at least as far as we understand the test so far. And so far the results have all jived with the actual status of the dog…(ie dogs that were already known to have Fanconi have tested affected, and their offspring have tested in the manner predicted by a simple recessive inheritance pattern)

Clear or Carrier should never develop Fanconi… so either is OK especially for a pet... And so far the test has proved right on with over 875 now in the database...

  • Thank you for all the information. I am going to a dog show in Springfield, Illinois next weekend to meet some dogs from Meiterhaus (Tad Brooks). This makes me feel alot more comfortable. :D

Behavioral difference depend on the dog, the age the dog is neutered and other factors. Lots of studies on the topic but mostly you avoid the heightened mating response to other dogs in heat and chance breeding. Behaviorally, effects are generally not that much otherwise.

@Basenjimamma: Ok, I got it. So basically the only way (as far as we know with the test available today) to get affecteds is if the "breeder" either don't test prior to breeding or breed affecteds and carriers together, and not using a clear in the mix. Right, Affecteds and Carriers and IND (between a Clear and a Carrier, so should be considered a Carrier) should only be bred to Clears, period With the very, very few inconsistant results excluded, looking at the test results, what we are seeing is what we would expect to see, especially in looking at tested sires and dams and then their offspring.

Did you enter him on the CPP site? If the blood was received it will be marked there. They do not send any notice that it was received. But interesting that the ck was not cashed yet… could be that it has not been recorded yet since you did send on a Thursday to arrive on Friday... and Monday was a holiday

@dmcarty: re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire) So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test. Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true. No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...
