Chewing Questions

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Indi is 7m (as of yesterday) and he is furiously chewing on his bones. We bought him some of those twirly chew stick and he can demolish 4 3hours (if he can get 2 out of Turin and then 2 out of me when I dont know T has given him some) and then he will go and chew on his other bones. Its HOURS worth of incessant chewing.

I don't mind, hes playing with his own toys not being destructive, but is it normal? We take him for LOTS of walks, play lots of running games (fetch, tag, run like a crazy basenji/person) but lately he will turn down the games to chew. He has all of his teeth so is he ok? Should we see the vet?

  • Our girl is the same way at 7mts too. If she has a bully stick she will chew it for hrs. Even bones. I swear she would chew it 24/7 if i didn't take it away from her. She gets tons of exercise too. I wouldn't worry. Its a puppy thing LOL

  • Better bones then your couch…

  • Remember they are still teething at 7 months…. the back molars are still coming in at that age.... chewing is normal...

  • Dallas is 7.5 months & has been chewing up a storm. I bought him a dental dino when he was only 2 months old…had it since then in tact. Well I'll be darned if he hasn't chewed that thing to shreds this past week!! Like Sharron said, better his toys than your sofa...or underwear/socks/carpet/lightbulbs/everything in the entire house

  • I got worried giving kiro so many bones, so i would take lots of old shoe laces and tie them in her crate on the side.ONe big sting with tons of THICK knots and let her pull it off and that kept her busy. You just have to make sure they wont swallow it. (she didnt) and make the knots big and thick. she loved the challenge of getting them off the side of her crate.

it helps if your worried about to many bones…..

The only sounds I can consistently coax out of Jake are the ones where he sounds possessed. Step 1: Flip him on his back Step 2: Tickle/Rub his spine area Step 3: Wait for the demons He'll make other noises when he feels like it but I haven't figured out the "triggers" yet.

@agilebasenji: I have a friend who has a nonbasenji dog that was just diagnosed with Fanconi. They (owner and vet) started the dog on the Gonto's protocal. (yea!) I know there is a Fanconi list, but did not know if it was open to just Fanconi affected basenjis or if other breeds were welcome. Also, is it a yahoo group? thanks It is a yahoo group and it is open to anyone with a Fanconi affected dog, or so I have been told.

@basi: This is what I liked about the German system and many other countries in europe, being that all dogs have to be tested before they can be bred from. @tanza: Is the DNA Fanconi test reconized as a required test in those countries in Europe that require pre-testing? And it is really no different here… most have or are testing, but there are still people that do not and still have their heads in the sand about testing... I wish that all testing was public knowledge like the Fanconi test.... like hips, eyes, etc... Following more in depth from Basi, she is also meaning that in Germany breeders will recieve VERY hefty fines for breeding without the proper testing and permissions from the breed club. They can have their kennel license (of sorts) revoked, be denied from entering shows and registering dogs of their breeding or from other breeders). A dog has to be of a certain age, and received a set amount of show awards before it can be entered into the breeding permissions exam. Then a actual show judge and member of the breed club evaluate the dogs to be entered into the stud books.

Oh, I am sorry about the loss of your b to cars. Sadly, when they get out, the are often not car smart. Hugs.

Puppies usually "blow" their baby coat after teething and the color fo the coat will change at time…. So yes their coats to change, but not a lot... just like some pedigrees have black masking aroung the face (muzzle and eyes) that will fade with age. Also on Basenjis, the white never changes size... so a big white spot will be much smaller when full grown. Looking at the picture of your Kona, I would say that the white between his eyes was almost the entire area between the eyes when born
