    Ok and now that I think of it….in the middle of the group ring there were a couple of horse statues and when we were in the ring for group doing our down and back he kept looking over his shoulder at something and wouldn't pay attention to me!! Now I think he was afraid of those too!

    Yes, that's because they are prey animals. I had one of my five that was particularly sensitive to the least little thing. Not desirable in a riding animal, but he would have been the survivor in the wild. Nothing new ever escaped his gaze!

    It's actually easier to deal with unusual things with a horse when you are away from home…...because they don't know what is "normal" in an unfamiliar place they are more accepting of something "different", and in my experience more willing to trust you when you say it's O.K. :)

    Earlier this summer I went camping with Gossy and one day we took a walk on a trail where I had seen an unusual bird. I'm looking up trying to figure out what the bird is and suddently Gossy jumps up and does the "startled run". I look to see what's going on, and there in the middle of the trail is a crawfish with its big claws snapping away. Gossy had absolutely no desire to mess with it :eek:

    What a riot - If I'd come across that situation it would probably mean a quick cross to the other side of the street or whatever - bugs, BIG bugs, are pretty gross to me. As to your other statement:

    Yes. tenacious is one way to describe them. There are days when "serving" my basenji could easily translate "for dinner."

    We like to threaten ours with the possibility of "roast haunch of Basenji" on the menu. Somehow he doesn't take us too seriously! :D

    I can believe it - after all, we live in a hurricane prone state, and who knows - there may come a day when we can't get to food - nice to have it living with you.:D

    If you pay attention, there may be some subtleties that might give you a clue. Dogs pay close attention to body language. He may see the Collies as a threat because of something not easily noticeable, and perhaps he is generalizing if one of them has given him bad vibes and the others look similar enough for him to consider them a threat. My boy really didn't like small white fluffy dogs, I have no idea why....but perhaps because many were noisy and wanted to get in his face.

Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

    @melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :thumbs_up: Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

    Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

    hi, try some neolsporin for his scraches you can use it on cats, dogs. and people can use it too. my vet told me about it and he deals with basenji's allthe time .!. it's like 5.00bucks and the 200.!!

    My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
