Invisible Fences

Basenji Talk
  • Isn't that the truth Patty… it works till it doesn't!

  • Our two Goldens respected an invisible fence, but the Basenji– not so much. Sometimes, they don't even respect the visible ones. :) We installed a picket fence at our last house, and I decided I wanted those pretty scallops. Our B-girl quickly found she could get a little momentum going and clear the center dip in our 4' fence. Now I have a 6' shadowbox, and that's done the trick.

  • I think any dog can "work" to get out of any fence, but barrier fences take longer for them to do so. It also keeps out other "critters". Hope your companion comes around.

  • I wanted to thank everybody for their input. At first, I was extremely disappointed. Part of me was hoping for even one or two positive experiences to make myself feel better about my only option. However, I think the overwhelmingly negative opinions worked in my favor. The boyfriend is coming around… last night we discussed options. He said, "We can have a fence, but you're not going to like what I want." I said "As long as it is a basenji proof physical barrier, I don't care if you put brown and pink lacquered (suggestively shaped boards) all around our yard!"
So it will still be another year before I save up the money, at least, but I wore him down much more quickly than I had hoped!!! Thank you all so much for your help!

Oh, we will DEFINATELY need pics of that!

  • My thought was, it will sure make giving directions to your house easier.

  • Ha! yes to the above two posts!

  • Love this idea…

  • You could do something "small" right now, and then expend it as the $$ comes in.

This post after the "suggestively shaped boards" post?
I'm afraid to even post what popped into my mind.

  • Giggle, I have been married for 30 yrs. So wouldn't know what you were thinking..wink!

  • You are all a riot hahaha.
I knew my comment would be appreciated here. I'm just happy he gave in, because I wasn't sure I could keep him if he wouldn't let me have a fence ;)

@cognition said in Basenji Puppy - Indoor Fence/Crate?: I'm torn between enjoying him as a puppy and hoping he matures lol You will miss the puppy as soon as he outgrows it. You will also remember it fondly, and every once in a while... you will get a glimpse of that puppy and he will melt your heart all over again.

If you're looking for an "outside dog"... not the breed. If you are simply concerned about play time outside, then a 6 ft fence contains most. If you have a climber, they have inward leaning caps that stop that. I do know people who have used a good fence, then an invisible one a couple of feet in so the dog cannot dig under or climb over the fence.

@Knipper: @Krunzer, Which Peaveymart? I tried to find it in their catalogue, but all they have is wire mesh. We hope to do Cricket's back yard next year, but if I can find this now, I'll get it! I think it is called Wire Mesh or something similar to that….I wanted to say wire fabric though. We got it in the PeavyMart here in Grande Prairie.

My yard came with the standard 4 ft chain link fence and I have never had any real problem with EL D. When I acquired him from the breeder I made sure he was not a climber to begin with (she had some dogs that could clear 6 1/2 feet easy as pie). He likes to sit sometimes in the corner and watch the activity out front by the neighbor's, so the chain link is a plus in that respect. The squirrels learned pretty quick not to run across the top of the fence. The only time I've had a problem is when one neighbor acquired a pretend-dog that likes to come by our adjoining corners and harass EL D (and me or anyone or any other pet in the vicinity).

We have actually been really lucky in this regard. Our backyard is enclosed by a picket fence reinforced with chicken wire around the bottom. It was here when we moved in last year. Cyrus has never tried to dig or climb out of the fence at all. We are actually hoping to replace our fencing with vinyl this year, so it will be even more secure. Cyrus does not have access to the outdoors when we are not home, however. He is too clever for his own good, and we worry about what he would do if left to his own devices!

Two 26 pound dogs are a wriggling hand full to just scoop up Invisable fence owners, I find 90% of the time send the dogs out on their own without anyone watching them and NEVER walk them. I guess it's similar to us sending ours out in our fenced in yard, but we always keep an eye on them, keep the house's door sightly open (the girl opens the sliding glass door on her own if it's not locked). The problem is when strange dogs come into contact without one side being supervised. Our yard in the winter for those in New Mexico! You can see our fence in the Basenji exhibit/compound [image: path.jpg] Our neihbors dog, when close to the house, sees a car coming and charges fast as it can right to the curb, like it's going to run right in front of the car, then stops. The car usually slams it's brakes on, really upset!
