    I do hope you can get your boyfriend to change his mind (by fair means or foul!) as I totally agree with the other postings. There are very few Basenjis with no prey drive whatsoever and as most of us seem to agree 'it works until it doesn't'!!

    Our two Goldens respected an invisible fence, but the Basenji– not so much. Sometimes, they don't even respect the visible ones. :) We installed a picket fence at our last house, and I decided I wanted those pretty scallops. Our B-girl quickly found she could get a little momentum going and clear the center dip in our 4' fence. Now I have a 6' shadowbox, and that's done the trick.

    I think any dog can "work" to get out of any fence, but barrier fences take longer for them to do so. It also keeps out other "critters". Hope your companion comes around.

    I wanted to thank everybody for their input. At first, I was extremely disappointed. Part of me was hoping for even one or two positive experiences to make myself feel better about my only option. However, I think the overwhelmingly negative opinions worked in my favor. The boyfriend is coming around… last night we discussed options. He said, "We can have a fence, but you're not going to like what I want." I said "As long as it is a basenji proof physical barrier, I don't care if you put brown and pink lacquered (suggestively shaped boards) all around our yard!"
    So it will still be another year before I save up the money, at least, but I wore him down much more quickly than I had hoped!!! Thank you all so much for your help!

    If you're looking for an "outside dog"... not the breed. If you are simply concerned about play time outside, then a 6 ft fence contains most. If you have a climber, they have inward leaning caps that stop that. I do know people who have used a good fence, then an invisible one a couple of feet in so the dog cannot dig under or climb over the fence.

    Chris, how about a compromise? Create a pleasant but smallish "Fort Knox" enclosure where the dogs can be outside without super close supervision ('tho I'm not a fan of B's being outside at all if their owners aren't home) Then go ahead and fence the rest in an affordable, climb-proof material for those times that you're able to keep a close eye on them. This approach works for some folks, depending on the size of the property and wildlife present, and how committed they are to keeping their dogs safe. Keep in mind, 'tho, the fence isn't just for the dogs–depending on your property, you might want to securely fence a yard so you can enjoy yourselves on summer evenings without a skunk, racoon or bear sneaking up on you :)

    We have 4 ft. chain link and the dogs have a dog door. We are fortunate that ours are not escapers, they are older couch potatoes but even as youngsters they never tried to escape. Ours have outdoor access 24/7, whether we are here or not, which is nice if we get tied up and are away from home all day. I agree with Sharron, in my experience, single dogs are more likely to go looking for adventure! Anne in Tampa

    My yard came with the standard 4 ft chain link fence and I have never had any real problem with EL D. When I acquired him from the breeder I made sure he was not a climber to begin with (she had some dogs that could clear 6 1/2 feet easy as pie). He likes to sit sometimes in the corner and watch the activity out front by the neighbor's, so the chain link is a plus in that respect. The squirrels learned pretty quick not to run across the top of the fence. The only time I've had a problem is when one neighbor acquired a pretend-dog that likes to come by our adjoining corners and harass EL D (and me or anyone or any other pet in the vicinity).

    I have a doggie door for Sahara and it has been great so far, Knock On Wood, haha!!!!! I have underground electric fencing and I feel secure that she will not cross it. She has been shocked testing it a few times, but not lately. She stays in and out, and there are days that she stays outside alot, depending if my hubby is home working in the yard. I work days and my hubby works nights, but sometimes he is busy and leaves the house for a few hours. I do wonder when I come home what I would do if she was not here, but I see that sweet face laying in the driveway waiting patiently for me to come home.
