My basenji goes all nuts with wet towels!

Basenji Talk
  • And after a shower do they lick your legs? It's like OMG evil water!! What were you doing in the shower….don't you know that water is BAAAADDDD???

    exactly!!!!!!!

  • I swear that if I dry my legs before Oakley gets to lick them dry, that he is mad at me for not letting him do it! Oakley also "preens" my arms on occasion which I think is his way of being lovey.

  • The little quirks that these guys have are amazing. Have they tried the 'diversion' tactic on you?? You are sitting down eating supper then they go do something bad so that you have to get off your chair to go see what they are doing….meanwhile they are circling behind you on their way to jump up on the chairs to get at your food??

  • We call those love nibbles. They do it to each other as well as us humans.

LOL, oh yes…. you learn to "take your plate with you"!

  • Yeah you learn to take your plate reall quick!! That or push in your chair. I swear sometimes they are smarter than me

  • Tucker knows how to unroll socks. I get them together and roll them then throw them into the clothes basket to take upstairs and he will grab a pair, take off with them and I will find them upstairs apart. It takes him like 5 seconds.

  • Gbala is into wet hair which is very embarrassing when she climbs on to guest's shoulders and rubs her face all round their heads!

  • haha Maca is a champion stealing my food! i think my work's launch was safe and get back to grab my bag and voila! just found the bread.. and the ham was gone.

She licks my foots too. And thats a good thing for me. lol

  • We make guests put their purses up on the counter, because the b's think it's a game to root for kleenex.

  • My guy likes to rub against wet towels, or pull them down and roll on them. Also wants to lick you dry…...all of my Basenjis have felt it their duty to dry people or each other. But what my guy really goes nuts for is skin cream. If I am putting body lotion on after a shower he jumps on the bed, sniffs the cream and rolls around like crazy. I humour him by putting a little bit of the cream either on the bed or on him. He absolutely loves it! (of course, he will roll in disgusting things outside, so that makes me wonder what my skin cream smells like to a Basenji!) :)

  • If you really want to see your basenji "roll" in something that smell nice to me anyway, take the scented parts out of the magazines you get, open them up and put them on the floor. You know what I mean, the "samples" you get either in ads, like the Bon, etc…the dogs go crazy for them..As well as dryer sheets, empty soap wrappers...
Just a hoot to watch them roll.

  • My husband is a heavy equipment mechanic and some of his jobs meant that he would work on the Florida beach…. the minute he would take off his boots, Lucy (and then Lola) would smell his boots like they were filled with rose petals.... and then our b's would roll, and roll, and roll~ all over his boots! What in the world could they smell? :)

  • It's no fail that everytime I come home from work or anywhere really and Oakley finds the exact shoes I wore and bring them to me and licks them! Even if I mix them in with my shoe collection he "just knows" and isn't satisfied unless he gets them. I find it humorous but I'll admit I've had to buy quite a few new pairs as they dont last long with Oakley in the house- I'm such a pushover and he knows it!!

  • ALWAYS…. HE will follow me, jump up and try to get my wet hair... scratch on the shower door to get it...LOVES wet towels. he ESPECIALLY loves my teen daughter... she smells GOOD. LOL

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).
