Nicky's New Harness

Basenji Talk

  • Last Thursday, Nicky started to limp, favoring his front left leg. It started out sort of intermittently, only when he first woke up and walked on it. By Saturday he wasn't putting much weight on the leg. So we took him in to the vet who looked at him and felt the issue was in his shoulder, so she took some x-rays and found he had a bit of bone or cartilage in one of his tendons so wanted a consult with a specialist. The specialist saw him yesterday and did his own exam, he felt that the bit of bone has been there for quite awhile and though may be causing his discomfort it seemed he was actually much more tender in his neck and had the symptoms of some disc pain. So he has been prescribed rest, anti-inflamatories, and a harness for walking.

So Nicky is trading in his collar.

    And sporting a new harness.

Nicky now has a Wags, Wiggles, and Whiskers Freedom Harness thanks to his favorite training instructor, Nancy, who always has an assortment of sizes and colors available. It has a front and rear clip and is a no pull harness though he really doesn't pull. It does have nice soft velvet for the strap that goes around his chest, just behind his legs. So far he is liking it.

  • I love the WW&W Freedom Harness and tried to buy one in Ohio. They are nowhere to be had. I tried several ways to find a store that carries them. No deal. So, I haven't bought one yet.

  • Glad to hear that Nicky will most likely be OK…. he looks great otherwise, I was glad to see him this past Saturday at the trials.

  • You can order the harnesses online, http://www.wiggleswagswhiskers.com/

    Nicky is in a small.

    Thank you.

  • Lisa, is he just barely in a small? or could a slightly bigger Basenji fit into a small. I would like to get one for Hippo, but he is a the large side..

  • His is taken in about a 1/3 on the chest side straps and almost a 1/2 on the under strap so plenty of room to adjust smaller and still a ways to go on the larger side but if your boy has a good amount of girth you may want to go up to a medium.

My dilemna as well. Kipawa is 26.2 lbs. Wish they made something between small and medium.

  • I really think the small would work for the vast majority of basenjis. Even my biggest around basenji would still fit this small. It has probably 4 inches I could still let out around the chest which is what would need the most adjusting.

  • Fran, if Kevin and Therese are going to come out to the lure event this weekend in Cathlamet and if they have a similar sized dog to Kipawa then we can test it on that dog and let you know if you will have enough room.

  • I think I am going to order a small, then if it is too small, I can use it on one of the girls.

  • That makes sense, and when you have more than one basenji chances are it will fit someone.

  • I think I'm going to order 1 too. Buddy is 28 lbs but will probaly be fine with a small.

  • Those look very nice. I use harnesses for Eddie due to neck issues that presented as a severe limp right front leg/shoulder. A good friend/chiro felt around and thought it was actually neck, so we do "gently pull his head off' stretches when he seems stiff and that , combined with a 'step-in' harness has made a huge difference. I hope your Nicky is better soon and that the harness helps him as much as one helped Eddie.

QUOTE=LeeL: I have noticed that it is a lot easier to accidentally train a Basenji than on purpose. ;) And not necessarily something you WANT them to learn!

@Lenora: As some of you may know, Abbey turned the Big 3 on Christmas Day. She has made a few resolutions for 2007 which I think reflect her new maturity. (1.) I will not kiss any more kitties even if they are my cousin, because my nose is still sore from last time. (2.) If given a choice between a bath and going out in the rain, I will choose the rain if I have to tinkle really bad, and going out in the rain may actually delay having to get a bath. (3.) I will not get up from a nap when my mom is taking a shower and knock the ironing board over on my head. (4.) This year I resolve to eat healthier. No more bath sponges, bath scrubbies, socks, catalogs, leaves off the airplane plant, or my Santa's nose. (5.) When my mom has Important Visitors I will not excuse myself from the room and return carrying a bra. This causes my mom to make very loud noises which hurt my ears and makes me ashamed of my little joke for nearly a whole minute. Happy New Year from Abbey and Lenora! I should probably get my own username on this forum, so I'm not continuing to write about my own undergarments & such under my boyfriend's name… My boyfriend's basenji mix loves dirty clothes. Andrew used to have two female roommates, and Bandit would pull their dirty undergarments out, chew the crotches out and leave crotchless panties lieing around in embarassing places. I felt so sorry for them! Another time, he ate the hems off of Andrew's pantlegs. We came home one evening to find something sticking out of Bandit's butt. Upon further investigation, Andrew ended up pulling out two 6" pieces of pant hems from Bandit's rearend. Bandit also loved to dig through Andrew's roommates' bathroom garbage & pull out the really nasty items and eat those. Many a small string has been found dangling from his mouth while trash is strewn about the bathroom floor... Yuck! Carrie

I can understand the need to give him a bath. For me, I didn't want to be the bad guy in his eyes when he was a pup and me new to him, so I took him to a pet salon. (Yes - if he gets spoiled, then so do I for this job.) They have the right equipment to keep him in the tub, clean ears and clip toe nails. It cost me $25 including tip . . . but at least I didn't have to do it and he was so happy to see me when I picked him up. I felt like his hero.
