Stick's new trick

Basenji Talk
  • So we now joke that Stick thinks he is a person now. When I allow him to get in bed with me he will crawl under, shimmy around, and carefully crawl back out so his head is the only thing sticking out from under the covers. Not only that, he lays his head on the pillow! It's one thing if he did it once or even twice, but over the last week I've seen him do it a dozen times! Silly dog/cat/person  !

  • This is apparently a common basenji behavior. There are many pics in the gallery of basenjis "sleeping" just this way. They look like people, with their heads on the pillows and the blankets covering their "shoulders"

We don't let ours on the bed, so I've not witnessed it first hand (I know, I'm a cruel, cruel basenji owner, but no dogs on the bed!)

Wierd, that they like to sleep that way, but there's proof for ya

  • Tosca does this too, but not all the time. She starts out the night by sleeping under the covers, curled up in a little ball by my legs. However, she must get restless during the night, because by morning she is usually half under the covers. half not, and laying with her limbs streched out. If i pull her up by me she will lay with her head on the pillow and sleep too, and she does this on the couch as well.

  • Magnum is either all the way under the covers or laying on top of the covers. In the almost 4 years we've been together, only twice has he had his head out from under the covers. (I personally think he likes all the "aromas" under there!)

    Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, I guess!

  • We have 2 that love to sleep like that and one that wants to only be buried deep down by our feet.

  • Lola & Booger fight for the coveted under the covers curled up between my legs spot. The loser sleeps under the covers against my side or back, or curled up in front of me so we're spooning. Once the sun comes up, it gets warmer & they both come up for air. Booger sleeps on top of the covers but still curled up against me in some way, and Lola pokes her head out & sleeps with it on the pillow next to mine.

  • In my house the boys always choose to sleep on top of the covers; the girls always choose to sleep underneath. I have no idea why.

  • EL D will occasionally sleep partly on the pillow (when I'm not in the bed). Usually though he sleeps totally under the covers (actually his own sleeping bag on the bed).

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

Those look very nice. I use harnesses for Eddie due to neck issues that presented as a severe limp right front leg/shoulder. A good friend/chiro felt around and thought it was actually neck, so we do "gently pull his head off' stretches when he seems stiff and that , combined with a 'step-in' harness has made a huge difference. I hope your Nicky is better soon and that the harness helps him as much as one helped Eddie.

Jayden is super gross when it comes to what he'll eat: poop, vomit, and, if he pees on the patio, he'll lick that. Honest!!! We feed him and we feed him very well! Yucccchhhhh! Pat

@Lenora: As some of you may know, Abbey turned the Big 3 on Christmas Day. She has made a few resolutions for 2007 which I think reflect her new maturity. (1.) I will not kiss any more kitties even if they are my cousin, because my nose is still sore from last time. (2.) If given a choice between a bath and going out in the rain, I will choose the rain if I have to tinkle really bad, and going out in the rain may actually delay having to get a bath. (3.) I will not get up from a nap when my mom is taking a shower and knock the ironing board over on my head. (4.) This year I resolve to eat healthier. No more bath sponges, bath scrubbies, socks, catalogs, leaves off the airplane plant, or my Santa's nose. (5.) When my mom has Important Visitors I will not excuse myself from the room and return carrying a bra. This causes my mom to make very loud noises which hurt my ears and makes me ashamed of my little joke for nearly a whole minute. Happy New Year from Abbey and Lenora! I should probably get my own username on this forum, so I'm not continuing to write about my own undergarments & such under my boyfriend's name… My boyfriend's basenji mix loves dirty clothes. Andrew used to have two female roommates, and Bandit would pull their dirty undergarments out, chew the crotches out and leave crotchless panties lieing around in embarassing places. I felt so sorry for them! Another time, he ate the hems off of Andrew's pantlegs. We came home one evening to find something sticking out of Bandit's butt. Upon further investigation, Andrew ended up pulling out two 6" pieces of pant hems from Bandit's rearend. Bandit also loved to dig through Andrew's roommates' bathroom garbage & pull out the really nasty items and eat those. Many a small string has been found dangling from his mouth while trash is strewn about the bathroom floor... Yuck! Carrie
