• I am soooo excited- just went on the website to check up on their puppies. First litter will be two weeks old on Thursday and the second litter will be one week old tomorrow…. I cannot wait to find out who will be my new B baby :D, the wait is just killing me! The countdown is on and I get to have my first visit at 6 weeks!!! whoop whoop

  • Congratulations!!!! It's an exciting time…... Remember to post some nice pictures!!!

  • I'm there with you, Chealsie508. Waiting is hard! A few more weeks before I get my little guy. He fell asleep on/against me while we were visiting the pups and the parents. 🙂

So exciting..Waiting is so hard..I am waiting on my puppy, he is coming from Sweden..it is killing me, in a good way. I get updates every few days, with pictures and movies, so I am OK, but what I wouldn't pay to visit him myself..gosh..

  • Kipawa and Basenjimama- you are both so right- waiting is the worst!!! For me, visiting isn't hard because I live about ten minutes from our breeder but she prefers the puppies to be about 6 weeks or so before people come b/c she says they are too small to be interacted with. I KNOW it will be even harder once I know which puppy is mine to just walk away and wait so I feel for you both….but soon, little tiny feet will be running everywhere and chewing on everything :p

Wow, 6wks? I have people there almost right after the are born. And always by the time their eyes open. I think the more interaction the pups get with touching, feeling, smells, etc the better. I think there is a lot of interaction from ages 3wks to 10wks when they are ready for their new homes. Obviously we take precausions to cleanliness and if they have other pets at home, but a little hand sanitizer and no shoes goes a long way. I have never had a puppy or litter get sick from early interaction.

That said, as with all things, each has their own ideas and ways, certainly Pam has raised enough litters of the years.

  • Tanza,

I didn't know if this was the norm or not as I have no breeding experience but I certainly do wish I could spend more time with them-especially to see them grow and develop; who wouldn't-lol. I just remember last year I was told that they were too little to play or interact…it could just be they don't want me around until its time to socialize- unfortunately it's not my call...Pam is a great breeder and all I can do is nod my head and follow her words like the bible...lol. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask her again this year when I can come visit? Anyhow, until then I have been doing the workbook on Basenji.org to help me prepare.

  • I had a rottie litter and one of the puppy people came over every other day lol … even tho didn't know which would be their pup. made them wash, leave shoes outside... But they lived about 3 miles from me.

  • DebraDownSouth- I emailed my breeder to see if when I could come and see them- I am very curious and interested to see how they develop and since I myself live so close to them it would be so nice to take some time and visit them soon- I don't want to offend anyone or step on any toes so whatever they answer with will be what I go with.

It's so hard though to see the pictures and wait though!!! so so….so difficult

  • I also have people over pretty regularly with my pups. Visitors every weekend after 3 weeks old and really, many people just pop in to say "Hi" when we have pups in the house hoping to sneak a peek. Moms have all been great about letting people see even the wee babies.

  • My last puppy, I visited the breeder when the puppies were about 4-5 weeks. She lived about 4 hours away so that was basically the most convenient time to see them. It was a really cute age. I posted a video of it a while back.

I hope you get to visit often since you're so close. 😃

  • my two bobs worth -

i got to visit every weekend from when they were born, i lived about 20mins away from the breeder. i didnt know which one i was going to take home but playing with all of them was the greatest experience and to watch themand their personalities develope. Also was great time to spend time with the breeder and learn things.

And i love having all the photos and i look back now and she was so little lol

  • Im am so jealous, everyone is getting puppies!!!!!!!!

  • Puppy season can be a great time- last year I remember being jealous of everyone and now its my turn (brag)…will certainly post lots of pictures since I am taking the first week off when he/she comes home. Love hearing all the stories of the breeders about their puppies- fills my head with lots of cute thoughts

  • A Dremel for nails.

  • renaultf1- I thought of that but I am afraid to do it myself…..I am a big baby! ask me to cut a newborns nails- no problem but a puppy or a dogs and I run for the hills

  • how often are you willing to make grooming appointments to take your pup to get its nails trimmed? it scares me every time i do it, with clippers or pedipaws, but i still do it because suki's nails grow soooooo fast! they need trimmed about every other week.

  • I am lucky that one of my close friends is a groomer so I can easily get them done as needed, which I know is often. If I wasn't in a place to be able to do that then I would familiarize myself with the process
