can anyone helpme….wehave a new 4mth old puppy. Wing Commander we name him `winco.(we had him off Jane). he is very well behaved and is learning quickly..........our problem is crying/howling at nights.he seems to get so destressed and i worry.iknowhe has to be left in his crate but for HOW long? 1 hr....2hrs? we gave in lastnight and brought his crate upstairs and he settled straight away!!!! erica ruth

  • Sounds like you figured it out.
Keep him by you in the crate.
Course, my b's sleep with me.

  • I always have their crates in the bedroom with us, never someplace else. That way they know you are right there. And if during the night they need to go out, you are there to hear them "complain" …. and are able to get them outside.

+1 - I did the same when I brought my pup last year. Worked like a charm.

  • I think it makes them feel more secure and settled when they can see and smell you right there. Ours sleep in the same room with us also.

  • I can't help you because our Bs sleep with us and the only time they spend in crate is during the driving a car.

  • We didn't let Paco sleep in the bed with us until we were sure he had potty training down; during that potty training time, he slept in the next room in his crate and cried the first week, even if we moved the crate into the doorway where he could see us. Over time, though, he stopped.

One night I sat with him and rewarded him with treats every time he got quiet. I think getting filled up with treats made him tired and he fell asleep and was quiet for at least that night.

LOL… be careful what you wish for.... you will have to learn to sleep on the smallest part of the bed... as B's will take over 99% of the space.

I have to say... when my elders were with us... for about 10 yrs. they all slept in bed ... maybe one or two nights in a crate... but for the most part bed dogs... now that they have passed over the rainbow bridge and I have just to two new pups... they sleep in their crates.. and "I" have never slept better...gggg

  • Buddy used to crowd me so I bought a doggie round bed, put it on one side he sleeps in that. Pesto, no crowding.

Glad that worked for you… mine would have just looked at me and say... cool, Mom's sleeping in a little bed tonight, we have more room!"

LOL, Pat…OMG, you took the words right out of Ruby's mouth!

LOL, it worked because he's not an under cover dog at all. My last 2 were under cover dogs and would not have used it. One would go under cover at the bottom and the other at the top. Most of the time thankfully they did not crowd me. My first Basenji was perfect always stayed on the other side in the same spot never crowding.

  • My female sleeps in the bed with us but she likes to sleep at the foot of the bed under the covers. She's never been a problem!

  • Good for you, working with the crate - if keeping it in your room works, go with it. We totally flunked crating - ours sleep with us….

I fell into this by accident by putting their dog beds on top of mine one day. They seem to really like them (the smaller the better), I just move them around the house when I want to encourage them to sleep somewhere. Both my dogs start out in their little round dog beds and they eventually migrate under the covers sometime in the middle of the night or early in the morning.

Although, what helped the most is I bought a King-sized bed. 😃

  • Welcome erica ruth and winco. Have you any pics ? 🙂
We have a 5 month old who sleeps in her crate, in our bedroom. She's quite happy in there and will go in on request at bed time.
We have been tempted to have her in bed with us, as she is so cuddly and warm. However she is quite a dominant character and i'm worried this would make her worse.

  • :DMake sure your puppy is warm enough! We tuck ours in with a light blanket at night. When we started crate training, my other dog who is not crated and my cat were staring at her so I covered the crate with a blanket to eliminate the "eyes"! Now it is a month later and we no longer cover the crate. When we turn off the TV at night and say "Time for bed" she automatically goes into the crate and nestles in her bed and we shut the door to keep her safe in her den! In the morning I get up early, take her outside and then she goes back to bed with her humans so she can warm her feet in the toasty bed with the big dog and the humans for a half hour or how ever long it takes us to roll out of bed! Hope it all works out and you don't end up sleeping in the dogs bed!
