@Duke: I am curious if anyone knows … In Africa how many B's is or was in a normal size pack? I found this, very interesting indeed Jill. http://www.basenjicompanions.org/articles/zaire.html Basenjis were everywhere. In an average native village of about 120 people, there would be about 50 Basenjis roaming loose on the farms of the village. An average farming/hunting family might have 8 to 12 Basenjis living with them in a small pack. Ann said there were never any serious fights. There was a fair amount of jostling and jockeying for rank, which was carried out by growling and stiff-legged dominance displays. A good deal of shoving and body-slamming occurred, but they mostly seemed to settle in to their places within the pack, which was usually headed by a strong, alpha male. Ann speculated that the lack of fighting may have been because they were all loose and were not crowding each other. Occasionally, a minor scrap would break out over food, with the tidbit usually being grabbed by a third Basenji who was not in the fray. Males mated with many females; there was no paired mating behavior.

My other alternative was to have my dad stay at our house for a week, but we ran into the similar issues - so many rules to explain. In doing some research online, I also found this site www.abka.com. It's for the American Boarding Kennel Association - this is how we found the kennel we chose. It's a good resource. I also recall reading something online about how it's safer for them to be at kennel than to have a friend or family member watch them. Just imagine if the dog ran out and got loose - a pet sitter would have a very hard time dealing with that. If they are in a kennel, they are secure, safe and well taken care of. I'm leaving better about our decision to do this, but I know I'm going to cry! :)

i bought my wife a nice basenji charm several years ago. It was pretty nice. I had to order it as most dog places/stores/gifts (unless at a dog show) do not carry basenji stuff.

Lisa–maybe you can get the video from the TV station? Or sometimes they have it available through links on their web site?

When my B asks to be put on the bed and I don't don't it he starts looking around all crazy to see what he can take to rip up and he looks at me from the corner of his eye like saying "If you don't pick me up I'm doing damage", little spoiled furry brat he always gets his way and ends up on the bed.

:D These stories are so funny My 24 yr. old son moved 5 hrs. away and needed some help decorating his first apartment. Of course Dad and I told him we had a few things he could use and we would love to visit the weekend. My son said, "Mom bring Sahara, don't board her". My son is part owner of her, and I told him I would love to do that but if I crate her while we are gone to dinner (we were going to dinner with his new girlfriend) she would scream and make awful noises and his neighbors would probably think it is a woman in distress. Besides he had just moved and you have to pay to have a pet, and even for visitors, like $250. He fussed and said it will be alright, I want to see her, but I did convince him that we didn't need to bring her. Now I know we made the right decision. I bought my B from a petshop and she cost me $1, 500 and he talked me into buying her by giving me $500 on her. My husband almost busted a gut when I told him the right price (I did hold the total price from him til I got her home) now he wouldn't take 5, 000 for her, he dearly loves this dog. They are buds and she loves him also, it was a great choice screams and all. haha:D :D :D :D :D

This is all too funny!:) When we got Metinga (our 1st B) 5yrs ago, we used to get stopped quite a lot with ppl asking "what kind of dog is she, she's very pretty". One day I had a man at the dog park ask me "is she a Dingo", I said no close relative though. Now a days I have found more ppl recognize the breed here in Calgary. They still ask but more now say "what beautiful Basenjis". As far as other Bs go, I have met a few more ppl w/Bs here in Calgary. Helix and Metinga had there first try at lure coursing a month ago. We met a lady that had 2 female Bs and they live 5min away from us,….who'd a thought! Apparently there are others that attend practice but were not out that day. One Sunday I went to our annual Dog Jog for the Humane Society and this couple came running up to me and said "we saw your 2 Bs and just had to come meet you!" They have a 3yr old, red/white male (who is a lot smaller than Helix). There has actually been quite a few Bs that we have seen and met out at the dog park we go to. One couple we met bought a 4mth old, red/white female from Petland Pet Store. I was both surprised and horrified all at the same time. They told me a local breeder was selling them to Petland! Another couple that we see out there has a little black/white female about 6-7mths old. A few years back before we got Helix, we met a lady out there that had an older female, red/white. Her B- Rosie, has since died. Had also seen a big male brindle, but have never seen him since. All in all though, the number of Bs in Calgary is still quite low- about 6-12 or so. Rhonda- Helix and Metang's mom:)

We have a TiVo wishlist set up for Basenji and once it recorded an Episode of I Dream of Jeanie. We checked and the show description was about them going to Jeanie's home, the Island of Basenji, but there were no Basenjis in the episode. :( I wonder if maybe one of the writers had one or something.

@Jylly18: Thanks for the advice, I think her bump is way too small to be a tick. She still has it tonight but on closer inspection it looks like a small pimple or clogged hair folicle. The only weird thing is you would think it would be tender, but she let me look at it and stuff without even flinching…oh well, either way it doens't look too harmful. Lots of dogs get these….if they are not too hard, sometimes you can express them...but usually they will eventually go away on their own.

Hello, I have some ideas for your stains. Everything these ladies have been saying is correct. Hairspray definately works for ink stains, it has been tried and tested many times by myself. It works on all fabric types from synthetics to vinyls and all polycotton and cotton blends. Just spray your carpet (I like to over spray usually) and take some carpet cleaner and it should wash out. The Tide pen is a miracle in it's self, I too have recently discovered. Spot shot works really good on most stains, it used to be a household necessity until we got our Hoover Steam Cleaner. No pet owner should be without one!:D As far as the Basenji, good ol soap and water does the trick with some elbow grease! I am disgusted to say that my boyfriend one day decided he was going to give Tang a tatoo using a black sharpie marker. I got mad at him and took Metinga upstairs and washed her head until it came off. It did not take that long maybe about 10-15 min of washing and the white was good as new. I used a bit of dog shampoo as well.:D

@Capt_Jack_our_Basenji: Thanks and CONGRATS to you too, EVERYONE here is pregnant, all my friends (all from my husbands submarine) LOL. I guess its something on the boat, lol. Thanks! That is so funny because in the building I work in there will be 9 babies born this year (between the mothers and the fathers) and there are only about 50 people. That's pretty darn close to 20% of the population here. We think it's the water. ;)
