@vickilb: My little BRAT, Hunter, LOVES to make his own trails when we go hiking. Last year he got one of those Foxtail seeds stuck way the heck down his eardrum. He had to be put under because it was resting on his ear drum and he wouldn't hold still for the vet!!! $500 later, he is as good as new. Do I take him to the same hiking area, you betcha!!!! Those foxtails are BAD! We have them here in the summer, and they are everywhere, so there is not much we can do. Yes, that kind of vet procedure can cost quite a bit. What we don't do for our fur babies!

This sucks! I can't find any evidence of bat poop on my balcony anywhere. There's also really no where for them to hide. The bat was found where it could have possibly come off my balcony where the pup was. She was on the third floor balcony, and the bat was all the way downstairs, probably about three feet from the beginning of my actual balcony. When you come downstairs, there's a little step leading down to the sidewalk. The bat was perched on this part of the sidewalk, hanging upside down. I could have sworn it was slightly twitching when I first saw it, but it could have been the wind. I sat outside to warn my neighbor, because they also have kids and would have to step right where the bat was. When he came home and I warned him, he smacked the bat down with a piece of wood he just do happened to be carying. I asked him of it was alive and he said it was dead. I told him I had called someone to come get it, but I guess he took things into his own hands. I called the vet but of course they were closed. So I left a message explaining what happened and asked what he thinks I should do. They have an emergency clinic but since I don't even know if her and the bar had actual contact I'm not considering it an emergency, unless she shows some dramatic behavior change between now and Monday. Everything I've been able to find online seems to say that a 10 day confinement to check for symptoms is fine.

@agilebasenji: Zest! has about 2 extra pounds he could have. Jet the trying also has a few to spare. I wonder if I can send them via the USpost. Spencer says "send 'em on– Priority Mail, please!" Though if he keeps being a little platelicker, he may reclaim his "love handles." For now, he is still the Angelina Jolie of the dog world.

If you have a dog in pain, I highly recommend Tramadol. A vet will have to give you a prescription and you will need to make sure it does not cause a problem with other medication. It helped tremendously with my elderly BRAT foster Annie who had back problems. Sometimes if a dog is in pain, it will not want to eat. Jennifer

Spencer gets that on his thighs sometimes in the summer. I thought it was a heat rash, but maybe he's been around prickly stuff in the yard. I rub a little lotion on it, and he seems to think that's the equivalent of a doggy massage. I watch him to make sure he doesn't lick it off, and the red is usually gone in a day.

I'm really not sure why you care so much as to remind me where my breeder lives or who she is ( as both of us clearly know) . It's a rather insulting innuendo. As mentioned on the forum previously I experienced the hard way about not vaccinating more than one shot… Id rather a breeder teach me not to repeat Mistakes and tell me how to move forward ( which Pat did) Rather then hearing "ive killed my dog" and be chastised, which was what I wa first met with when trying to get guidance! And believe I mentioned in this thread I don't have intentions of giving more than one. As for why I prefer to ask Pat questions ( which really isn't your business) I don't have a great breeder relationship with Oakleys breeder, while I love her dogs...her an I don't get along personality wise. Hope thats enough of a satisfying answer for your obvious itch to know, of which I assume my breeders already told you!

Yes, Spencer is much better now, but he is still very thin. He lost six pounds. Even strong antibiotics cannot fight a severe abscess. I'm sure your vet found and resolved the problem under anesthesia, so that should put Egyn over the hump. SubQs and a few weeks of antiobiotics will hopefully get him back on the road to health. I had to feed Spencer critical care dog food through a syringe for several days after the surgery, then make him special soft food– the aforementioned meatballs-- for weeks after that. Thanks to everyone for the info. Trixie actually had her first at-home treatment on Sunday. She's a really good patient (except for nail trims). Currently using a heating pad for warming, microwaves are out since the bag has a metal ring. I'll have to dig through the records for the values later. O.K., looking over the most recent test: BUN = 84mg/dL (down from 104) CREA = 3.9mg/dL (down from 5.1) These were taken after her 2 day stay with a continuous I.V. drip. Still on the high side, but luckily she still has her normal appetite and energy level. She is also on the Hill's k/d diet.

Fran as an avid user of estrogen patches, I try to stay up on research. For every research that says cancer, another says no or only in much older women etc. Since I had to have a hysterectomy at age 40, and none of my siblings, mother or great aunts stopped their cycles until even mid 50s, it was very early. So like my specialist says, read the studies, decide on your own. The REAL dangers most agree on is uterine cancer, which I no longer have. And because mine was following years of fertility drugs, they took my ovaries too as very high risk related. Okay so that said… not that I am aware. Hormones used on bitches has primarily been used only for 2 things-- urinary incontinence and to control cycles for showing. Some research has been done on its use in spay-related aggression issues, but not much. I think one issue is dogs live such short lives, by the time they would see results of hormones, the dog is dead. But they do know there were issues with the hormones used to control heat cycles, hence it is off the market in the USA. (checque drops were the common one I think-- someone can correct me if wrong).
