Sick Basenji

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My Basenji Egyn (my son named him that because he said he looked like the dogs from Egypt) is very sick. He has trouble eating. When he starts to eat he yelps and will not let you go near his mouth. I took him to the vet and the vet said his mouth and tongue looked red and irritated. He gave me antibiotics that he has been on for 10 days. He does not seem to be improving. I can tell he is in pain. I am taking him back to the vet on Monday. Has anyone heard of these symptoms?

  • Did the vet do a dental inspection to make sure he has no abscesses or teeth that need to be pulled causing the infection… Is he eating normally?

  • My rule outs would be Canine Ulcerative Paradental Syndrome "CUPS" (aka Stomatitis) or Masticatory Myositis. I would ditch the "regular joe vet" and go straight to a Internal Medicine doc and/or Internist.

    Good luck.

  • How old is Egyn? Has he had mouth problems before? There was a thread posted on here not long ago about a dog with possibly the same/similar problem. Is he eating now? Try wet or soft foods for him. The other person had to make his B little 'meat balls'. I would try another vet, sounds like your first vet did not do a formal exam of his mouth.

  • How old is he? What antibiotic is he taking? Has he ever had a dental cleaning done? He will probably need to go under anesthesia so the vet can have a better view of his mouth, teeth, and tongue. It could be a problem with his teeth, a growth, or one of the diseases that CongoMama posted in a previous post.

  • Read this thread started by ownedbyspencer, in the 'health' section. Sounds similar, Spencer stopped eating or drinking, had an exam under anesthesia which reeled ulcers on his tongue and throat caused by a abscessed rear tooth. Not saying this is the same thing, but it bears reading.

    Sick Dog Question– help, please?!

Sorry - that should read …"go straight to a Doggie Dentist and/or Internist."

  • I am taking back to the vet tomorrow. They are going to put him under to do the full dental and mouth exam. Thanks for the input.

  • Was Spencer OK after the tooth was removed?

  • Yes, Spencer is much better now, but he is still very thin. He lost six pounds. Even strong antibiotics cannot fight a severe abscess. I'm sure your vet found and resolved the problem under anesthesia, so that should put Egyn over the hump. SubQs and a few weeks of antiobiotics will hopefully get him back on the road to health. I had to feed Spencer critical care dog food through a syringe for several days after the surgery, then make him special soft food– the aforementioned meatballs-- for weeks after that. Good luck to you-- and positive thoughts to Egyn!

My Valentino had terrible dandruff. His vet said it was due to dry skin. She had me add Goat's milk and coconut oil to his diet. His dandruff lessened dramatically after about a month. The amount of coconut oil (solid or liquid) per day should be no more than 1 teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight. Valentino is about 27 lbs. so I give him about 2.5-3 teaspoons a day. I divide the amount in half and add it too his meals. I feed goat milk rarely because it is so high in calories.

I agree with Buddys Pal… if they didn't do either urinalysis or xray, I'd get them done. If you have a sick dog and the vet just sort of says "oh well, blood work looks okay".. may be time for a new vet. Something is obviously wrong.

I hope your pup is better soon. I do know that it can take a long time to treat pneumonia, and a 'tracheal wash' with cultures can point you to the correct antibiotic if puppy doesn't improve. Years ago our young dog had pneumonia and we went through 3 antibiotics with poor success, the cultures showed an unusual organism and we switched antibiotics and he was on them for another 3 months but recovered and lived to be 15. If you are not comfortable with your vet, go to a specialty group for a second opinion. We often go straight to our local specialists, saves time and money in the long run.

@tanza: LOL …. so hmm... great weather = higher Vet costs... makes perfect sense to me!!! LOL great weather equals more want to live there. More want to live there, drives real estate costs up. Increased real estate costs drives other expenses up. LOL, it does make some sense. But then, wth is up with NYC which has icky weather? Oh wait, massive overcrowding, never mind.

I saw that you have a sewing machine – its not hard to make your own coat. I made one for my previous beasties with fleece and wool. I made it with a high colar (for the backside of the neck) and an indentation for the tail and a big belly and chest band (I used snaps at first but then switched to velcro). It worked pretty good for our single digit temps (and the occasional below zero walks to the corner). My current beastie refuses to go out the door with a coat on, however. When the outside temps are below 10F she won't stay outside any longer than necessary to go potty - the squirrels can run around all they want then! With respect to booties, mine will at least tolerate them when we go for walks but it's more for the road salt. However, the good pair I bought this year leak somehow (maybe through the stitching?) and she doesn't like them with they get wet inside. Nevertheless be sure you get the best you can find.
