Seems like every decade or so, they do similar studies with similar outcomes and yet people still want to believe a mixed breed is healthier. And what I'd like to know is WHY it isn't logic to understand that a purebred dog from generations of healthy dogs, bred for health, bred to diminish genetic disorders, is more likely to be healthy than a dog from mixed parents from people who simply let it happen with no idea of health or genetics. European studies have shown what incredible differences it makes on things like CHD and other inherited disorders when you breed clear to clear, clear to effected, etc. With their massive research I wish they would go back and separate out the well bred/tested purebreds from those without health/dna clearances.

Lucky for us in New Zealand we don't require the rabies vaccine, but it is great news that work is being done so dog's in countries that require the vaccine are not subjected to unnecessary poisoning. Glad there are people out there giving their all into making the use of vaccines safer for our pets as they can't speak for themselves. Hope everyone involved gets the recognition they deserve for their hard work and persistence and hope the results in the coming years are all positive. Jolanda and Kaiser

He actually does go in our other dog's crate to steal food and my wife actually caught him laying down in the bed in it. Nothing is ever impossible. We did try crating him for a short car ride and he chewed through his lead trying to escape.

Behavioral difference depend on the dog, the age the dog is neutered and other factors. Lots of studies on the topic but mostly you avoid the heightened mating response to other dogs in heat and chance breeding. Behaviorally, effects are generally not that much otherwise.

I haven't studied coat colour inheritance in dogs, but from what I know of it in horses, you can tell quite a lot by looking at sire and dam and grandparents. Sometimes you can rule certain colours in or out, and determine probabilities of the colours you will get in a mating. Someone who knows more about dog colour genetics will be of more help. If an animal is homozygous for a trait, or heterozygous can sometimes be determined by knowing the colour of the parents…..

Nice to hear some good news on the forum for someone, such a shame sometimes even the simple things take time to sort out, glad your eye problems are solved to the point of being a possible allergy to something rather then being something more serious, in saying that allergies are a pain in the butt. Yay for Becca and Tucker. jolanda and Kaiser

Hoping vets acknowledge this and act on it, I think there are a lot of people in the dark regarding vaccines and put all their trust in their vet, I was one of them until I did a lot more research when getting Kaiser and was shocked to find my last dog was receiving vaccines he didn't even need such as lepto and kennel cough(given by a newly trained vet) totally not required as his lifestyle didn't ask for it. Kaiser had his last 3 core vaccine at 13 weeks and a titre at 8 months and he has immunity for the 3 core diseases, so will titre again sometime in the future for safety's sake. Feel guilty for letting my other dog down and mad for being blind. So we now only have the annual checkups sadly the cost is nearly the same as if he would have a booster and checkup. Feel that vets should be trained more in vaccines and raw feeding as they seem to be lacking and negative towards both. Jolanda and Kaiser

Yes, she has CUPS. LOL on being hated. If it helps, Arwen was AWFUL for the longest, would try to get under the covers other side of bed etc. Now, she actually comes over at bed time and waits for brushing. She doesn't like it, but as long as we keep her abscess free, she puts up with it. I have also managed to cut her from steroids every 2 days for almost 3 yrs to ever 3 days for the last 8 months with no abscesses, so we are doing better. Do I hate doing her teeth… yes. But I couldn't bear to just pull all her teeth so I don't have to do it, and really, it doesn't take me 5 mins from the moment i get the toothbrush with paste to go put the toothbrush in the cleaning solution. It is so worth it to not have her lose any more teeth. :)

To each their own opinion Debra, I am working with Oakley on other issues right now and at twenty nine months he is still maturing. I don't live my life by the "what ifs", as of right now I'm able to be with him all the time when I'm not working so yes, I cater to his wanting to be around me, it's not rewarding for me to have a dog that's not independent of me, but it's the reality..and until I'm ready to address it 100% I haven't…he has made significant progress in crating and barrier frustrations...so I'm happy with the progress, and frankly..these other issues needs to be dealt with before addressing this...in order to make me leaving him with others successful. He's a happy, healthy young boy with a complex and stubborn mind, I'm going to work with him and not fight him on evolving and adapting his behaviors. However, your concern is noted and appreciated.

Recently there was a recall of Innova Dry Dog Foods which produces a Grain-Free food that I was using at the time called EVO. Recall was for Salmonella found in numerous batches of their product line. Innova also makes numerous other dog foods (EVO, Innova, California Natural and Healthwise), worth checking into! I am new to this website and posting altogether and apologize if this was out of context.

@Maca: Well i do my best about alerting about fanconi. there is a young vet that are bredding basenjis and making fanconi to his dogs and now have a litter from Summer and Blade the famous champion and will test all his litter prior to sell. So he is good news, im still not breeding Maca, looking for a brindle male tested and register, but lately there is no one. Now i member of the group have a litter but still he will make fanconi to the mom so im waiting to see the results to check if i get a puppy or maybe with Laika sick its time to just care my actual girls.. i dont know. Greetings and thanks for support.. I have used Maca but not for long as it tastes awful. I was using it raw, putting it in shakes, but I couldn't take the taste. Maybe cooking with it is the way to go, I did not know that was a good option. I still have most of mine, I think I'll give it a shot that way. But as far as It being a caffeine alternative, there is not any stimulant effect.

Yikes about Bitty! Interesting that it happens more with age – I feel like I only started noticing them last year. It's all part of her dermal profile. She had really crusty ear rims when she first came to us, and I don't know why... I actually thought that's just how her ears were, like dry skin. After a while, I found that I could gently flake away that crusty stuff, revealing perfectly clean and furry ear tips underneath the scabby layer. Later she got a scrape on one ear and that left some scarring which has remained quite dark and dirty-looking, though I do wash her ears out with Nolvasan Otic. Maybe I need to look at other cleaners. She does also have a larger marble-sized cyst on her back which the vet has examined before, but that seems unrelated to the blackheads and whiteheads. As long as her lumps don't get any bigger or become painful, I leave them be. She eats a very healthy diet of grain-free kibble and raw. Her coat is super soft, which is why it's all the more noticeable when I find those bumps. Bowpi is embarrassed that I've publicized her imperfections for the whole forum to see. ;)

I used Frontline for years, but I used it in March, not again until generally June, then in Oct. After a few years here, we no longer had fleas. When I'd bring in a rescue, sometimes we'd get a few but one round of Frontline was all they needed. I haven't had a flea in at least 5 yrs, btw.. so I don't use ANYTHING unless I have a problem. When we lived in an apartment in PA, we had no choice as they were always there. But with my own yard and no neighbor connecting my yard with pets, no new fleas.
