Hi All ~
My 10 year old girl is a pleasure to have. Not destructive in the house when left alone and no accidents in the house or car. Sometime early this year, it seems she must have suffered a spinal injury. No obvious signs except for a yelp when she went to get up. She doesn't play with other dogs very much when I take her to a dog park (after stopped doing that now!) and when she does to doggy day care, they are very watchful and she is on their pet cam but she could have injured herself in the house when she slipped on the vinyl floor when getting ready to go upstairs; saw that happen twice before she started to yelp so I have put a mat there and she can get up the stairs fine now. She did see her vet who put her on Rimadyl and one other. The yelping has stopped for several months but now she doesn't seem to know when she has to defecate or if she has already started defecating. On our rare walks (I'm older and have to work strange hours so walks are not always possible) I can sometimes see the poop coming out of her anus before she knows she needs to squat. Sometimes in the house, she will lose one perfectly formed turd - just one. In the yard (she has a half acre fully fenced secure yard) she may squat to poop but then start to gallop off before she finished (doesn't seem to be in any pain). The vet originally did not order x-rays because the dog responded to the meds and I think she realized the cost of further dx might be prohibitive for me. The vet says she may have lost sensation in the lower bowel and has given me some exercises to do with my girl.
Was wondering if anyone else has encountered this type of issue. I will crate her now (just to prevent surprises when I get home). I thought about using poop panties but am a bit afraid that might lead to a UTI. I don't want to use the show people's trick of a suppository because that might make the situation worse over time. She seems to be a happy little camper other than this ; loves her car rides and midnight treats and eats like a little champ. Not putting my dog down for inconvenient poop issues!! Just wondering if you have any thoughts, experience or suggestions.
Thanks for your time and attention.

Hi, I'm not a breeder nor an expert about canine breeding, and just an owner of pet Basenjis, but I recently learned a little more about the breeding process of reputable Basenji breeders: Line breeding/tight line breeding. I see a long discussion thread on this forum from back in 2007, but that's been quite a long time ago, and I'm hoping to see comments from breeders in more recent times and lines of thinking. Thanks in advance.
Our Basenji get rashes on her belly. We've tried to figure out the cause. We have taken her to the vet and even a dermatologist. We have gotten a lot of "could be this could be that," but despite many visits and a lot of money spent... We still don't know the cause.
We tried a limited diet recommended by the dermatologist... Nope. We've done allergy tests and nothing is conclusive. So our poor dog just has to live with these break outs.
The dermatologist told us to use Microspore leave on cream when she breaks out to help heal. We've been doing that and for the most part it has been working. But today I applied "one more treatment" to end a 4 day battle with a rash on an area that was mostly heeled and it broke out into hives immediately.
So I guess that treamnent is out moving forward.
Hoping someone else has overcome a similar experience and has advice to keep our dog from suffering.

I need some opinions on a name for newly acquired little girl. My previous little girl passed in October 2017 and the devastation as you can imagine, was terrible. Her name was Cleo. This October, I adopted another B, a tri-color the same as Cleo. She's 1/2 African Basenji so initially I was trying to name her based on her heritage. I came up with Akila Grace so far. I also thought of naming her Shadow only because she is just that, my shadow. She literally follows me everywhere. Another name that really has no African connection but is cute and easy to say is Skeeter. Anyone have any thoughts on these names?
Just seen this breed on a somewhat strange site, is it a thing?

Chance is always going to be our golden boy. Gentle, friendly soul who just wanted to cuddle, chase birds and lick our hands, feet and anything he could get his tongue on.
Despite all odds, epilepsy he had for 10+ years of his life, broken leg, allergies, he lived for almost 18 years and outlived his younger sister Kiya. Now he joins her on the rainbow bridge where they can cuddle again and chase birds together. Love you my little buddy.

Hi All. My 10 yr old girl is the sweetest laid back pup ever. Loves being with me in the car, snoozes under the desk when I'm working and loves sleeping nicely in the bed with me. About 2 mos ago she had a bit of a gastric upset and incredibly put it all in a doggy bed rather than on the floor!! Can you tell I both in love and in awe of her?
About two weeks ago she would give a quick yelp when she is getting up from the bed or even from her doggy beds. We saw her vet yesterday and there was no pain of yelping when she manipulated her limbs, feet or spine. Vet thinks she may have jarred a disc or did an neurological injury so she is on Gabapentin for 7 days and will take x rays in a few days depending on how responds. Vet and I think that she is of the age to benefit from an assist in getting down from the high seat of my Subaru Outback (she doesn't ride in the cargo area so she rides in the back passenger seat). I am wondering if any of you have had experience with and can recommend a dog harness with a handle so I can help her get down from the killer high seat Subaru. I want to use the harness as a seat belt for her also.
Last year I tried one from Amazon but it was a horrible fit so it went back.
Hoping to get some recommendations from this experienced group. Thanks for any help you can give.

Have any of you with a super picky eater found a good food that your basenji loves?
I have to rotate foods every month or so to keep my 2 year old female basenji eating.
Our "resident" Basenji dog trainer here in San Diego uses shock collars to "train" Basenjis. It makes me sick. I'm looking for any article that I can post that addresses the problems with shocking a Basenji - or any dog - in the name of training. Horrifically she puts this device in the hands of pet owners. I was a volunteer at the Humane Society where we put clickers in the hands of owners and I got to see first hand BAD timing. Badly timed rewards don't damage the dog (though aren't great for communication either). Badly timed shocks is just torture. Any articles that you know that I could pass along?
Safi had her 2nd birthday yesterday, time is really flying!

Hello Basenji owners.
My dog Miles, a 7 year old basenji needs to see the vet and post-covid he doesn't like it.
The vet suggested giving him trazadone and gabapentin before his appointment to calm him down.
Has anyone tried this before?
Thank you,
ariadne scott
I have a 10 month old female who still has not gone into heat but also will not pee in our yard anymore. A few weeks ago, it was fine. At first I thought it was because it rained recently and the mulch and gravel was wet. It went on for 17 hours one day, another for 12 hours. But, she will pee in our neighbors wet yards regardless of ground materials. Could she be marking? It’s been going on like this for a couple weeks .
Thought you might enjoy these, the first one was created with Adobe Firefly, the others with MidJourney, the first three are generic Basenji the last two are based on Safi:

Hi all! I have been having some fun creating adult coloring books and I want to make one that features Basenji's. So, I am asking you to please share your pups photos. I would prefer that you email the pictures to me privately. My email address is visible on my Basenji Forums Profile: @elbrant.
I process the pictures that you send, using 4 different software products, to reduce the images into a detailed sketch. This is not your typical outline of a dog... The process to go from photograph to coloring page significantly alters the image. The rendered image will include the environment surrounding the dog, whether that's a grassy field, your slippers, or a pile of pets on your lap. (Some images work better than others.) I am hoping to end up with 50 images/pages in total.

This does not infringe on your copyright. You retain all rights to your photography. I retain the rights to the rendered image.
Forum Anti-Spam rules will prevent me from announcing it once it's done. However, anyone who sends me a photo to use will get an email to let them know that it's finished, along with a copy of the coloring page(s) I created from any image(s) they sent me. (And a link to the finished book which will be sold through Amazon and Google Play.)
If you are interested in showing off your dog in this unique way, please email the pictures to me privately. My email address is visible on my Basenji Forums Profile: @elbrant.
Thanks everyone!!
