      When we see other dogs on our path, I tend to move off it and let them "play through". Every now and then you get someone curious about the breed and we'll instigate a meet and greet, just to see how far either dog will go.

      I tend to look for the "mohawk" - those bristled up back hairs that let me know she's on edge. Plus She-Ra's a growler, so you can usually get a little forwarning if she's not happy about the situation. Generally that's enough for both me and the other owner/walker to realize we should pull back.

      I get more incidents at the dog park than we do on walks, but I think that's almost to be expected. Never anything bad, though…She-Ra knows to run like hell if it gets too hairy, and she can pretty much outrun anything that's shown up in the park (so far). 🙂

      Alex

      Chance and Kiya get 1/2 cup/each of innova dry food in the morning after a 2 mile run and 1/2 cup each of innova dry food at night after a 3 mile walk.

      Usually in the mornings I mix their dry food with salmon oil and at night I mix it with nonfat plain yogurt. From what I learned salmon oil helps with their skin and joints and yogurt helps with digestion. Sometimes I also mix green beans into their food, but they don't seem to like it that much.

      I started giving chance a bit less per day, about 3/4 of a cup instead of a full cup, as he is getting a bit heavy.

      @ibi_n_sane:

      2 B-s are better then one :d yes, also a lot more work, as they can take over nasty tricks from each other, but on the other hand they play with each other and make themselves more tired, it is a joy to see 2 basenjis playing and enjoying each other, just beware that what 1 can do, 2 can do better and quicker and faster, and then I am talking about the mischievious stuff 😉

      I wanted Brando to at least have some breakfast, but he wouldn't eat a lot. So I tried to split it equal amounts and he would always leave some. Then I gave him a smaller amount in the morning and then larger at night and that was the right balance and he now eats both meals fully. You might just experiment to see what might work if you really want her to have two meals.

      Also, I completely agree with Pat about controlled feeding. I think picky eaters then understand that if they want something to eat, they bettter get it now or they'll be waiting a long time. Ruby was REALLY picky until I switched food. Brando is still picky on occasion. Both have missed meals because they didn't eat within a set amount of time. One reason I really like controlled feeding is that if they are sick and not eating, you know it…also, it helps with controlled "output" as well.

      Could be either…but since it is specifically in an area where a new animal has arrived, and not any other places..probably territory.

      Check out Tia. I think that's what you are looking for. 🙂

      Then look at Tyson and Shiloh. Not the right coloring, but similar build and coat….

      I haven't noticed Zaire having her tounge stuck. I do, however notice that when Zaire licks me (even right after drinking water) her tounge seems drier than Charlie's.

      Magnum eats grass all the time, usually with no vomiting afterwards. However, if he goes at it like a lawn mower, I know he's trying to make himself toss. (I can just imagine him thinking, "Wish I had me a finger.") :eek:

      B

      @youngandtired:

      :rolleyes: This woman is so stupid to let this B's behavior go to the point of looking like it will bite. My Sahara, does growl at times, but I would not allow this behavior at all. I have grabbed her when she tried to keep me from shuting the bathroom door on her, she was growling real loud, she knew I meant business and has not tried that behavior lately. I did carry a water bottle with me when I got into my car recently and told her, "No", and she has not done the growl & grab Mom's wrist since. Yea, the next time company stops by I will put her on a leash when they leave, which is a problem sometimes as she runs from me. Have to get the special sandwich meat treat out for that. haha!!!!! Can't keep her from the mailman and UPS man, I don't know when they come until it's too late. She is doing better about minding my "Leave It" commands, so I think in time of reinforcing no growling she will get better. Thanks all for the advice!:D

      Sounds like your making good progress C…...good job!!!!

      Keep it up......Mom's in charge!;)

      Sahara knows what to do, I always say to her, "Go Potty, Be a Good Girl!!! She looks at me like as if to say, "You gotta be kidding, get my sweet paws wet, out of the question"! I use to just let her out the front door and she would got immediately to the grass and pee, now she won't !!!!! It is becoming a tug of war, I will carry her out on the leash and she will try to get to the front of the house, so she can stand on the sidewalk, or pull to get to her doggie door. I didn't have time to take her out this morning, have to get up earlier to do this. I didn't find any wet carpet today so I guess she went outside. The saga continues, these Basenjis are strange creatures!!!!! Thanks for your suggestions, I will try them!!!!!

      Had to take Alex off Merrick's (both wet and dry). He likes it, but it was giving him HORRIBLE gas! He could literally clear a room for 15 minutes, or wake you from a deep sleep with the smell alone.

      Now he's eating Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul with raw egg mixed in. Cook both for 25 sec in the microwave. The gas has dropped off dramatically after taking away the Merricks.

      I think you should go back to your vets especially as this has been happenig ever since the emergency surgery. It could just be coincidence I suppose, but if she were mine I'd want to check. As Pat says more information is needed before suggestions can be given.

      you could use olive oil, also fish oil works very well, and flaxseed oil is yet another. there are other supplements you could add for a better coat too, minerals and vitamins. I'm fond of sea meal - contains minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and flaxseed meal. you should find out if it's truly just dry skin though. sometimes it can be cleared up w/ just a change in food.

      @jys1011:

      Last night they both cried for what seemed like FOREVER…ugh! I don't even know why?? 😕 They were fine right before we put them in their crates for the night & then out of nowhere whimpering & crying non-stop. This is very unlike them...usually they fall asleep on the couch & then they get moved to their crates & they keep snoozing.

      It was so bad that at 2AM :EEK: we decided to take them outside to see if they had to go potty which they did but when we brought them back in it was the same incessant crying & whimpering. I gave up & just said let them cry 😞 I really needed to sleep!

      I would have had those babies in bed with us. Sahara knows that I hate to hear her cry, I am soooooooooo easy, haha

      Ha! Yes, I have had Bs that do this….particularly one named Bubba Roi, who doesn't live with us anymore...but he would lick our pants! It was really a creepy feeling, and we tried to ignore it, but he definitely enjoyed doing it. Now anytime one of our dogs licks clothes we say 'knock it off Bubba' 😉

      I don't know why they do it...I think it is affection, but maybe they don't like the way we actually taste!
