I think you must have a mix there, he has the waistline, larger breast bone, some wrinkles on the forehead, some curl to tail, size, I don't think full-blooded though b/c he lacks a white tip tail, and the brown color, but he is very loving looking, and my B sleeps like him also. Whatever, I would treat him like a Basenji since he has alot of the mannerisms. Sweet!

RE: Look who I saw today!
I have never seen this color in a full blooded Basenji, is it because she is from Africian Basenjis?

RE: Mealtime Behavior
My B, Sahara will try to beg but she doesn't get fed from the table and she will try anyways, but then she gives up and lays down on her blanket on the couch. She is always good and goes away once we tell her to go lay down, or just "No" does the trick.

RE: What happened to my nice Basenji?
AJ thanks so much for your ideas, and knowledge, I really appreciate it. I will be on guard next time for sure, I just didn't expect Sahara's reaction that's all. I even fell down on the gravel and messed up my left hand and knee, it is so sore right now. She pulled me so hard that I lost balance, it was a mess, and an embarrasement, it was like having your child act up. She is my baby girl after all, even though I was so mad at her, hehe!!!!

RE: What happened to my nice Basenji?
There has never been an animal on my property after my dog, but the fencing has kept my dog from getting hit by a car. I don't think it is fair to keep a dog in a crate for hours on hours when you are working, just my opinion of course.

Sahara and I were out walking, the two dogs came up to each other, nose to nose, she is always on lead.

What happened to my nice Basenji?
Help! My B, Sahara attacked my neighbors dog today while we were out walking. My neighbor has a minature pincher, and they were walking and I hollered for her to stop. Well, as I approached her the the two dogs were nose to nose and Sahara jumped her dog. I was shocked to say the least, I take my dog where other dogs are and she has NEVER reacted this way. She growled and bit him or scratched him, I don't know for sure. I called later and she said he was licking it alot, and the dog would not let them check it out. I told them to take it to there vet and to send me the bill, that's the least I can do. I felt so bad, Sahara has never ever acted this way. Anyone have an idea what got into her, did the nose to nose cause a problem. I sure would like to know just what the heck did happen!! Thanks!

RE: Helping your dog lose weight
when you see this beautiful dog and they are way overweight. All of a sudden my B, Sahara was 6lbs. over her ideal weight. Well, I can't have that so I am doing what I can to get it off. She already looks leaner, I think I need to weigh her tomorrow. She is getting less food, and more exercise.

RE: Helping your dog lose weight
Is Wellness Weight Managment filled with fillers, or should I just keep her on Merricks, which she loves and just cut back. What do the experts think? Thanks

RE: Helping your dog lose weight
Quercus, I am so happy to get your suggestions. I will defintely get her thyroid checked, she doesn't eat that much, but she sleeps alot. I give her 1/2 cup of dry with boiled chicken that I cook for her on top, about the amount on a leg twice a day. She doesn't eat treats that often but when she does I give her bully sticks (just found out recently they have lots of calories), or 1-2 pieces of turkey 98% fat free slices in the sandwich meat dept. Like I said this is not a daily thing, maybe 2 times a week at that, she doesn't like biscuits at all, expensive or cheap. I had her on Merricks dry Grammy Pot Pie, or Turducken and I am switching her now to Wellness Weight Management. The Merricks has 3 times the fat, so I will probably stay with Wellness, only problem is she sometimes picks out the Wellness and eats the Merricks, I am mixing 1/4 Cup of each until her stomach can handle the switch. I was thinking today that if Wellness is all she gets I guess she will adjust or not eat. What do you think? I will be adding veggies, she likes broccoli, carrots (cooked ones) and green beans. Thanks again.

RE: For Sale: Basenji boy For Sale in Portland, OR
That's a bummer, I almost talked my hubby into gettting another Basenji, but that's OK, even though HR would have a very good spoiled life with us. We love our Basenjis, but I don't want to lose one either and we can't put up a fence b/c my hubby has his boat in our back yard and a fence would hamper him getting out.

RE: Basenji Female Fatty in FL
My B, Sahara is overweight and I have just started her on Wellness, weight management food. I am also making sure she gets her B500 run in everynight, and her walks. I try to play ball with her everynight as well, she will retrive it and bring it back to me until she is tired. She just got bigger all of a sudden, I had her on Merricks Grammy Pot Pie, I didn't know Merricks was so full of fat. I love the food, but I think I will be using Wellness for awhile, she needs to get about 6lbs. off. Does anyone know how fast dogs lose weight, I guess it is like people, all different. I am doing whatever I have to do to get this weight off, it is not healthy for her and I want to keep her with me as long as possible. I also have to stop free feeding her, that might be a problem as well. Any suggestions from the experts, I want it off ASAP.

RE: For Sale: Basenji boy For Sale in Portland, OR
I have a B, Sahara who is almost 4yrs. old. She needs a boy to play with and share her life with, but one problem. I have underground fencing in my yard, do you see a problem with that? Sahara has crossed it a few times to go after a cat in the next yard, but she just runs in the neighborhood and I can get her back after she gets a good run. I follow her around until she is tired, she doesn't like to go without me. What do you think, I am interested.

RE: Should I be concerned?
You know getting old really su***, in humans as well as our furbabies. So sad for your B, and to know that my B, Sahara tested postive for Fanconi genes.

RE: Rain Desensitization?
on those astro-turf restrooms for dogs, they are rather expensive at around $200, I have a friend that bought one and her dogs chewed it up. So I would not go there myself as my B, Sahara loves to chew. When it rains Sahara will hold it also for the longest time, but I have gone out with her with an umbrella over her and I and she will go. Then I praise, praise her and we go back till it stops raining or I do the same thing again. Of course she only goes outside b/c I have her on leash.

RE: What is that? And what makes them special?
just want to be smart mouths, and I think they are just jealous. Everyone that I have told that my dog doesn't bark replies,"Now that is what I need, it must be nice".

RE: My New Baby…
I love Basenjis, especially puppies. My B, Sahara is red & white, so of course I am parcel to these. I like the V names, Vega meaning Falling Star, Vashti, meaning very beautiful, and Victoria, meaning Great lake of Africa. I really like Africian names, hence my B name Sahara, her full name is Africian Queen Sahara, like the Sahara Dessert in Africa.

RE: What if your Basenji is putting on the pounds!
So what is the best weight for a 3yr. old Basenji female, I think she use to look better between 22-25pds. What's your opinion?
-
RE: What if your Basenji is putting on the pounds!
I feed Sahara 1/2 cup of Merricks dry twice a day, morning and night. I mix it with some boiled chicken that I cook just for her, and I use some of the chicken broth to make a gravy from the dry food. I use the Merricks Turducken or Grammy's Pot Pie dry. She loves Merricks, and was once a pickey eater so I doubt that I will change her food. She gets treats now and then, mostly Bully sticks and I doubt that they are that fattening, otherwise I use dehydrated duck or some other favorite. She does not like dog biscuits, and I don't like to feed her too many treats. I think she needs more activity, I will step up the exercise and get her to do the B500. She use to run alot more when my son was living home, but he moved for a job and he's 5 hrs. away, I know she was smaller then. Thanks for the tips, and I will get those pounds off, I know that she will be lots healther for it, it just got away from me that's all.
