Has anyone used BilJac food?

I found a dog food that my extremely finicky Basenji girl (w/ Fanconi) LOVES! It's called BilJac. Haley gobbles it up without me having to add anything to it! It's very exciting because we have a hard time keeping weight on her. Has anyone out there in Basenji-land tried it? Any opinions?

  • If you type in Bil-Jac in the Search area on this forum, there are posts about Bil-Jac.

This link also provides info on it. It's listed as a 1-star food (the scale goes up to 6 stars).

    Hope this is helpful.

aaauuuuuurrrrrrggggghhhh! Wouldn't you know it????!!!! I find something Haley loves and it's crappy food! (I've given her samples of some of the ones listed on the good or better lists…....nope-she turns her little nose up at them!)

Thank you though, Fran....I appreciate the link. Now I know where I can check these foods out.

But if she likes it and if she is picky, wouldn't it be better that she eats "junkfood" rather than no food? I mean, because she has Fanconi and all. Just curious what the thoughts are on that.

In Dr. Gonto's protocol, he has recommendations for food and does state, good quality dry food. Check out the protocol.

Thanks Tanza..I haven't looked into that..was just curious.

  • Was just going to mention Dr. Gonto's protocol.

Here is a link, hope the info helps you, Sadie.

  • I have had good luck with Innova Evo Red Meat Small Bites for my Fanconi Affecteds but neither of them were/are in kidney failure nor picky eaters. It is definitely a small kibble. Do you use canned food also? I use a meat based protein-Beef, Lamb, Venison, etc. for that as well. Perhaps adding a few tablespoons of canned food would help. Perhaps you could mix the Bil-Jac with another dry food and she would eat it.

Are you a member of the Fanconi Group on Yahoo? Perhaps someone on it has suggestions for other dog foods to try. There is lots of advice for pilling.

How is Haley doing on the protocol? Since she is a picky eater, do you have any problems giving pills?

    Jennifer

  • I was reading up a bit on fanconi and found this website that states as part of the protocol: (http://www.basenji.org/ClubDocs/fanconiprotocol2003.pdf)

    2. Any good quality dry food may be fed, with the addition of at least one can per week of HIGH PROTIEN ?wet meat? mammal meat based dog food (Beef,
Lamb?etc.) to replace long-chain amino acids and phosphorus. Poultry based foods have proven far less effective in management of this disorder then mammal based meats. The only exception to this high protien diet, in this protien-losing uropathy, is documented renal failure (increasing BUN/CREATININE). In this type situation, see the ?RENAL FAILURE HYBRID PROTOCOL? section later in this instruction set

My dog doesn't have this but I feed Wellness Core and she loves it. I also feed senior wellness to my older chow who's a picky eater and just add a bit of wet sometimes and he gobbles it up :)

@cicily-prestridge - You may never find out who the breeder is or health information unless the adoption agency has more information. Where are you located? For health there are DNA tests (cheek swab) available for Fanconi and PRA. You can order them at www.ofa.org

We feed raw meat (deep frozen) and like that a lot (our 2 sisters do, too!). Some vegetables too, like broccoli, cabbage, red beet, carrot, and the like. Both cooked and raw. We only bath them when they have rolled in something stinking, like a dead bird or so. When wet or muddy, we give them a rub with an old towel - they do the rest.

One of my pups, Crystal is the ultimate garbage gut… and will dive in any bush for that "thrown away" KFC chicken bone... sigh.. Poor Ann is forever grabbing for what is in her mouth... especially when around any place that is doing construction... one day it was an entire slice of pizza....

@wizard: I forgot to mention that my previous basenji loved to eat rabbits that he caught and muskrats. (I did my best to get those away from him) Oh. ew. We have found one or two squirrel carcasses in the yard over time, but I'm not sure who's killing them. Gypsy has in her youth, but I'm not sure she has the eyesight or speed for that anymore, so it's probably one of the Basenjis. Grosses me out! I know they'd both like to make lunch out of my cats.

My Hollie girl eats from the bowl sometimes and sometimes she takes a few minutes to another room. She constantly "hides" her dogfood, in corners, under a doormat, under my bed pillows, etc. I don't know if this is something that all basenjis do, or if it is because she had been a stray when I adopted her. Either way, she is certainly entertaining.
