I have been reading this site and these threads for about 5 hours straight (you could call me an insomniac but it is finals week lol). But i joined this site around a year ago i think because I became interested in this breed. But i have learned so much about them and almost expect anything. I do not remember how i found the breed. I just know one comes to our vet clinic but anyways. I am getting serious about searching for a basenji puppy now that I live in my own apartment and have two breeders in mind. So far I have attended a show and met Mrs. Terry Reeds beautiful show dogs and hope to visit her house over the holiday break. As in doing research and finding if these dogs are right for me I have found an even greater interest but have some things i must consider. This thread is mostly about them.
I am a college student in my Junior Year (probably going to be a 5th year graduate) and plan on attending Vet School somewhere to get my DVM. I do want to practice on livestock and rabbits. I have plenty of time to spend watching my B and entertaining it. I dont really have chewing concerns seeing as this is only an apartment and the furniture i get will be handed down. I do not have a backyard but wish to go to the dog park at least twice a week to work with socializing So the only fence I would worry about is that one. I do not plan on having kids any time soon and I work at a vet clinic so I know all of the medical procedures to follow with any age of dog and have familiarized myself with Fanconi and plan on testing for it.
After that long back ground here are backgrounds for my concerns:
I adopted her when i moved into my apartment she is now almost two years old. She is around dogs at my apartment and at my parents house. Each dog she is different with. The Great Dane at our apartment. She knows he will always back down from her. So if he gets too close she makes sure he knows it. He doesn't bother her she doesn't bother him and that's the way its been since they've lived together. The chihuahua at my parents house: This little dog doesn't take anything from anyone. We've seen roxi run through the room with the chi right on her heels. She never goes near her. The c0cker mix at my parents house. She is pretty old and doesnt put up with nonsense. She will let roxi know when to stop getting in her face and roxi will swat letting her know the same.
In the fall I will be taking a colt breaking class. The school is given colts from a ranch to let students have and train for a year. These colts are green and can be dangerous although nothing has ever happened to a student in this program. The fall semester is ground work and in the spring we ride.
Where I go to school is only an hour away from my house. I do make often trips home and of course so do most of my animals (ex: the cat and usually a bunny) I would like to take these trips with my B also.
Pretty much all of these concerns are leaning towards the question would a puppy fit for these situations. I do not want to put my B in a position that it could not handle. I know all Bs are different and act separate from one another. But generally speaking puppies are more curious and do not have the maturity level to stop playing. Such as if my cat swats and the puppy keeps trying to play. As far as the horse class I would like to take my B to the barn with me of course he/she would be on a chain and not allowed to get to the horse until i deemed safe. Which would probably be in the end of the semester. Traveling to my parents i dont see a problem with the dogs socializing they are really good about welcoming new animals(i do work at a vet clinic) but the concern i have here is more medical i guess you could say as in car sickness? Or stress levels?
I would be open to adoption or purchasing a young adult but the reason i wanted a puppy was originally for showing purposes. I have shown different animals my whole life and love to get a taste of everything. If i had to get a pet quality B because it would be better then i wouldnt mind. I also know that some breeders have show quality adults available. Im just weighing my options right now.
Sorry this has been such a long thread. I just want to make sure i dont have anything left out.
