Looking for a Young Male Basenji in Ontario, Canada

  • We currently have a female red and white. She will be 2 years old in December. We reside in Ontario. We would like to get Maya a playmate. We are thinking a young male (up to a year old) would be easier to bring into the family and easier to train (and Maya might accept him more). Prefer a Brindle or Tri colour, if possible. I'm hesitant with all the "nextdaypets" and related websites, but I do know I've seen postings on there. I have looked at the Basenji rescue website, but they are all states based.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Ruth, I left you a message.

  • I'm not sure if you found a male, but BRAT has two males available in Ontario.

Hi there, Funny enough, my guy is from a breeder in Pembroke - just down the road from Ottawa! They've had litters on and off over the years, but I'm not sure whether they're active at the moment (last I heard, one of the moms was in a "false heat" and they might try again with her in the summer). In any event, it's easiest to politely contact whatever active breeders you can find in Ont/QC, and I find they're very nice and often able to refer you to others should their bookings be full. That's how I did it. Best of luck!!

Also, check with Camp Basenji. Although she's in FL, she has homes up north and is willing to transport to the right home. Contact her because she doesn't list most dogs on the site. http://www.campbasenji.org/

Hi, I talked to my daughter last night and she really does not want me to find him another home, even though he's making her sick, (she's allergic to him). She threatened to leave home if I did. She's 18 so she could. I guess we will try and keep him. The good news is I did find a place that will pick up and drop off dogs, take them for long walks in the woods, and let them play with other dogs for the day. All for just $17.00 a day. So at least he's not in a crate for 9 hours any more and he seems to really enjoy it. He runs to the person right away and is excited to go and comes back very happy and tired.

Check the Basenji Club of Canada and Basenji Club of America websites. Many breeders will have listed their fall breedings [this is my assumption, as mine have been there for months] on their own websites. Do you also have children or just the dogs? 4 dogs does not sound chaotic at all to me… but I have two middle-school kids and their plethora of friends over here daily... plus my not-small-enough gaggle of dogs. Chaos is a given living [or visiting] in my house!
