  • Hi all.
I just found this sight and find it very informative. Others don't understand Basenjis unique behavior. I have owned seven Basenjis in all and love the breed. I now am owned by a two year old red and white Lady Kay-Dee. I have done some agility and am doing more obedience with Kay-Dee. Agility on hold for now. She also takes riding lessons on my friends pony and loves to ride in the cart when I'm driving my horse. I live in Farmingdale Maine.

  • Welcome! I saw your post in the other thread that you were in Farmingdale.

My name is Kim and I currently have 4 basenjis ranging in ages from 5 years - 6 months and live in Gray, ME. My brother and girlfriend had a basenji (Zeke) when I was in high-school in Falmouth - that's how I got to know basenjis. Zeke was my dog (because I took care of him all the time) unless the girlfriend was mad at my brother and took him away from me. ;)

Please tell us more about your basenjis - what breeder(s) did your basenjis come from - current, past. I see them/hear of them so infrequently in Maine that I'm particularly nosey :D. There is a member on this forum (Listeme) whose sister has bred in the past that is from Gorham (or Buxton). She (the breeder) is the one that helped me find my current vet in Hollis - who I love and loves basenjis (lots in that practice).

My 2 girls are from Eldorado (in MA), 1 of my boys is from Finland (he is co-owned by Eldorado and breeder in BC) and my newest boy is from Timar (in NY).

    Welcome, welcome.

  • My name is Donna.
The other Basenjis I had came from the Winart kennel in Portland. They are no longer raising them anymore. I wish they were because I definately would have gotten one from the. Kay-Dee came from Iowa. She is a real sweetheart and too smart for her own good. I read a book Good Bye My Lady many years ago when i was in high school and that's how I learned about them and wanted one. The first one I got was from the shelter in Augusta 29 years ago. A tri color male and black and white female and no one claimed them We got the tri male and named him Pogo. We had him for a year and had problems we couldn't handle and found him another home then I met the breeder and the rest is history. If I had known her when I had Pogo she would have helped me would the problems. I just love the breed, the size and the personality.
A friend of mine said she has a client that has four Basenjis. She owns Sable Oaks.

Welcome! A basenji riding a horse? I don't think I have seen or heard of anything like that. Would love to see pictures.

The movie based on that book is still available in some places - I got it in VHS format by going to Amazon.com - movie is sort of hokey, but follows the book really well - nice dog/actor in it.

  • Welcome to the forum from the UK. Here we have a longstanding breeder who did have Basenji who rode on her pony but i haven't seen any others.

  • Glad you found this site…we will be happy to hear your b stories.

Welcome, nice to have you onboard..

Welcome Donna…I wonder if her client with 4 basenjis is listme's sister, Gloria.

Your story is interesting about your kids breeder here in Maine. My brother's basenji, Zeke's breeder was in Gray (back in the 70s/80s) - I think she now breeds Ridgebacks. Debbie Hauri, in NH, is a longtime breeder and she was telling me about breeders that were in Maine years ago - I bet she would know Winart. She knew Zeke's breeder.

I'm finding the basenji world is so small. :)

My first B was sired by Mata Hari's Super Sheik and I knew the person that raised Bs and then Ridgebacks. I belonged to the Mainely Basenji club years ago and they used to have a couple of matches a year. Was a lot of fun.

  • welcome, it's nice to know another crazy soul who does agility with their basenji. I'm on my 3rd agility basenji. Digital the brindlewonderkid was my first competition dog. Now he's retired (over 30 titles to his name) and Zest, superstar in training, is in the begining of her career. She finished her novice titles and got her first Open leg a week or so ago.

  • I think folks who do agility with b's ROCK!

  • i had basenji from winart kennels as well

  • westcoastflea1 They raised some real nice Basenjis. I had a total of 5 that I got from them. Wish they were still raising them.

  • i found maya thru an ad in uncle henrys and the people i purchased her from had originally purchased her from winart.

mayas name on her papers was edens morning star. i wish i could find her papers to add to the basenji forum data base

how long ago did you get your basenjis from them?
did you have any black and whites from winart?

i did meet the owners of the kennels and met mayas sister at a local dog show,
way back when before i knew anything about anything they helped me choose a male to breed to maya, i believe debi hauri helped them with that, maya was bred to a tri boy in boston owned by andrew something who was active with basenjis and shows and breeding etc
    maya had 4 pups.

i just found out today that one of mayas pups died of a brain tumor he would have been around 9 or so.
maya died 2 years ago at age 10 of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

what is going on with all the cancer in dogs?

would love to know about your b's maybe one of them might have been related to maya?

  • I'm pretty sure Gloria isn't the one – she does have four basenjis, though :-). I'll check with her. (Yes, she's in Buxton.)

Simon and I try to go up to see Gloria every month or two. We should do a meetup one of these times; several members are from Maine and I'm practically from there.

  • The last one I got from them was Keeper he died 4 years ago and was 15 1/2. We owned his father who came from Winart also. I did have a black and white that I got at 7 1/2 from a lady didn't want her anymore. The lady got her from Winart's at the age of 10 weeks. Poor Max was so neurotic, scared of everything and I could not get her out of it. She would attack Keeper for no reason other then when she left Winart's she was not socialized. She died at 13 1/2. My first came from a shelter in Augusta Maine 29 years ago. Then I met Skip (Winart) 28 years ago and a year after that got a tri female. I had 3 other red and white males from Winart, beside Keeper.

Kay-Dee came from Iowa because I couldn't find a breeder from Maine. She is a real sweet loving girl who is too smart for her own good. She is a lot of fun as the others were. i don't have the papers in her because I didn't plan on breeding her. The breeder didn't want her bred anyway and all I wanted was a pet. Spoiled by Basenjis.

Another piece of the puzzle…I think Andrew is Andrew Sawler - who is still active in basenjis. His kennel name is Kivu. And I wonder if the tri Maya was bred to was his dog Akuaba the Yodelman or a tri out of him...could you guess on the year of the breeding?

Count me in please…btw, your sister, Gloria helped me find my vet - Dr. Anna @ Hollis Vet Clinic, who is fantastic.

Whatever she is, she's a little doll. It's nice to know that the displaced pups are finding such good homes.

Getting a dog from a responsible breeder is definitely worth the wait and the work to find. At my vet's office we are "the good basenjis". My vet actually sees several basenjis in their practice and the only ones they look forward to seeing are mine. The reason, mine have never tried to bite them, nor are mine shy about being handled, they are healthy. My vet was really upset to have a new client bring in her 8 week old basenji fresh off the airplane, it was terrified of people and had slipping patellas. My mom's vet is considered "the" basenji vet in her area. The majority of his clients have dogs bought from the internet or a local BYB. He became "the" vet because so many of his basenji clients are being treated for a variety of hereditary diseases. He was absolutely shocked when she came in with hers for their first exam. First off, that she was able to provide him with OFA information for both of her dogs plus information on the health of their parents. Secondly, because they were both in really good condition, good muscle tone, no signs of the disorders he so commonly sees. I have much the same experience with dog trainers. There are certain issues that they get used to dealing with because the pups that come to them did not receive as much early socialization. They are pleasantly suprised to see well socialized puppies with good communication skills. So what I am trying to say is that good breeding shows.

Thanks a lot for your warm welcomings. You can see Dayna's picture under "show off your dog" section. I am trying to go everyone's profile and see the pictures of wonderfull basenjis and basenji mixes.
