Guess my Basenji is NOT feline friendly

Basenji Talk

  • The neighbor's cat learned the hard way that Bella is not "Cat Friendly". The cat wandered into the yard Saturday and was immediately pounced upon. Luckily no injuries, just a lot of noise and swatting. After the cat broke loose, Bella gave chase and ran her up a very tall oak tree.

    Wow, that is pretty high..
Otis does the same thing, except our kitty has shown him the claws a few times so he is more careful now..those claws hurt when they scratch that little nose.
    Great picture.

  • Oh my goodness! Did Kitty get down okay?

  • Yeah, after I brought Bella in the house the cat came down pretty quickly. She didn't waste any time leaving our backyard either. ;)

  • Luckily the cat had a tree to go up!!! That is a great pic!

  • Indoors and outdoors are totally different things to a basenji. Trog is fine with a cat coming over to visit in the house, but outside it resembles a squirrel and will be chased. Love the photo.

  • Sounds quite the opposite… he obviously wanted to be friends with the kitty! He was just overly enthusiastic about it, and maybe went about it the wrong way :D

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

So I've committed to getting a brindle basenji pup January 7th. She'll be about 18 weeks old by then so hopefully not too old to cultivate a healthy, non-homicidal relationship with my cat. The wait is killing me, feels worse than waiting for christmas day as a kid ha ha.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
