The Art of Racing in the Rain

Basenji Talk
  • Hey, all, I came across a very good book by Garth Stein after I did a search for books about dogs on Kobo's online store. The summary from the back of the book explains it much better than I ever could, but I just finished it today, and I think any dog lover would enjoy it a lot! You know how some dogs are so smart, you're sure they would talk to you, if they didn't think you were too stupid to understand? It's kind of about that.

"Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zo?, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zo? at his side.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life…as only a dog could tell it."

    Very good read. :)

  • Thanks Mango - I'll see if it's available at my library.

  • I agree, a great read! Enzo is a terrific character, smart and loyal. I hated for the book to end.

  • I LOVED this book. it was a great read and Enzo is what dogs are all about. I have loaned it out so many times that it is on it"s last leg…

I have had a couple stained glass made, but there is normally a 3-4 month lead time as the artists are already booked up for Xmas this yr. Most of the artists on etsy will be booked this late in the yr, I had two quilts and a needle felt made a couple yrs ago and I placed my order in June in order to guarantee Xmas delivery. If you have a nice photo, there is a company called treasure knits that does wonderful woven afghans out of a photo with about a one week turn around. I have had both afghans and pillows made from photos as xmas gifts from them and they do great work.

This has been one of my very favorite basenji websites since I discovered it about a year ago. So dead on & funny & educational all at the same time.

It's funny how Lillie refuses to go outside in the rain to do her business. Surprise yesterday when it was raining, she spotted the rottweiler who lives down the block. She ran outside on my deck to get a good view of him. Hmm, what's that all about?:) Thankfully, it has stopped raining (at least for awhile) so my husband and son just took Lillie out for a long, long walk. She is so funny! Jodie:)

I have a cat that will walk around in the rain, she likes it. But if it is thundering, she heads for her cat door in the garage, hates thunder. My Basenji, Sahara hates wet grass, but is better about getting a bath now that I give her a treat when we are done. We carried her out in the boat, with her lifepreserver on and she liked it Ok. She is getting better but won't go outside to potty when it is raining unless Mom goes with her on a leash and an umbrella. Hence, her name Africian Queen Sahara!!!!!!:D
