My Defective Basenji!

Behavioral Issues
  • I live in the NE, outside Philly, where we were just given a good amount of great packing snow. It's Kylie's (=B) first real snow and while she was not initially thrilled about this cold wet white stuff, I found that to be proper B behaviour. But she came back inside, warmed up a bit, obviously thought about it for a few – you can tell because her little wrinkled furrowed forehead was in overdrive staring outside -- and then whined to go out once again. And she's been whining ever since. Seems she LOVES the snow! I have a defective Basenji -- Help!!

PS - As soon as I can upload some pics, you have GOT to see her just buried in the snow, it's hilarious!

  • No I think there are some on here that like snow. Our B Jaycee liked the 2 inches.
How much snow did you get?

    Rita Jean

  • My Eva loves the stuff. We got over two feet of snow and Eva just barrells through it. At one point she disappeared and came out about a foot away.

  • AJ is a pansy with snow. He'll go out in it to do his biz, but wants nothing else to do with it. He finishes what he's doing then gives me a helpless "how do I get out of this mess" look. Same wrinkled brow…..:D

  • So adorable! She conned me into another long walk in the snow!
Dang, I'm a sucker for that face!

  • BOTH our B's LOVE it. :) buy good snow gear and coats for the dogs. :)

  • We had 2 inches of snow last year and Abbey was fascinated by it but she was terrified of the snowman our neighbors made! Very suspicious of him.

  • I live in Maine - all 3 of mine love the snow. Mine go au naturale - they hate to wear clothes so I just limit their time out in the elements.

Reminds me of when I took AJ across the Puget Sound on the ferry…when we returned to Seattle, it was after dusk. The fireplugs they have in that area look like dwarves with big hats on in the dark. AJ would give each one the widest berth he possibly could and not burrow under the fence. It was the first time I'd ever seen a dog afraid of a fireplug. :D

  • We don't get snow here but Buddy jumps when we walk by all the fake Christmas deer and animals in people's front yards. The funniest is the air controlled Grinch on someone's front lawn that when the air lets in and out it slides in and out of a chimney. He stands there and stares at it.

  • Dan, will be happy to ship your way any and all snow we have this winter.

Both Otis and Moses (podengo donkey, like our friends call him) go crazy when they see those white wire framed deers..I mean crazy, and I am looking like a total idiot of the neighborhood trying to convince them to "leave it" and move on…good luck..
So glad to hear that Buddy is doing the same thing.

Yep, the white wired ones. They must of had a big sale on them. The yards here are full of those one's that have the air pumped into them, they look like miniature Macy's Day Parade balloons.

Oh Rita Jane that's very kind of you. We'll take a few days worth just for the fun of it but that's all. We're babys here in the SF Bay Area. :D

  • I say this just to see if it bites me but it's not as bad here as it was when I grew up. We could get snow any were from Thanksgiving on but usually right after Christmas. We would not see ground again until spring day's never warm enough and then more snow I just would hate snow and winter. At least now we get snow but it is usually gone in a day or two no more than a week. Who knows maybe one day all of you out there can have our weather and we can yours LOL..

We pay big taxes for this weather!

  • ..and I moved here from Sweden to get away from the snow…

and now I miss it, go figure..
I just love to sit inside and see the snow..but I am not that keen on being outside in it..

  • Both of mine like the snow; it's the rain they hate!

  • We've had barely a dusting here but its been cold enough to keep it on the grass. Mr. Annoyance is acting like its "rutting season". In, out, in, out. If I don't jump up to let him out he proceeds to pull at the blanket over my feet, or worse yet, bills/mail on the coffee table (much like teachers, bill collectors won't believe "the dog ate my check"). It's kinda fun though 'cause he's also just more playful in general right now. A couple more weeks and he'll probably hate the cold and snow like every other self respecting Basenji is supposed to….:D Silly Basenjis...don't they know their rep???:)

My previous males never had an opportunity to meet other basenjis (outside their breeder kennel) so don't know if the experience with my current female is "typical" or not. The first time she encountered another, it was a tri-color older female that was a real bitch and instantly got aggressive (now whenever they see each other its "hackles up"). The first time I took her to a lure coursing event, mine was friendly enough until a little blind female came up and bit her. The second time I took her to a LGRA event, a lady came up behind us (while mine was trying to potty) with her tricolor female and her dog attacked mine. So now hackles go up any time another female comes within shouting distance.

I grew up with birds, hamsters, cats, dog, rabbits and we had hives of honey bees. Never anything wrong with me all my life even got lucky never stepped on a bee. My kids have cats, dogs, bird and my daughter never worn pretty little dress cause she would go right under a car with her dad and get grease all over her. Dirt and my son go hand in hand. They have been healthy. Now as far as walking to school I could not do that. Been far to many kids never got to school to many out there take kids. So my kids have never been allowed to walk to school. One mile there but anything could happen. People that usually do not want animals have there little fancy house and do not want the hair or the dirt. We have a friend who has three children just got a puppy about month ago poor puppy. Puppy got over gate in wash room and well had fun while they were at work. She just about lost it aniamls are better off without being that kind of home I told her so. Sad news her husband just went to work for Science Diet and they have a animal day once a month and they told him it was important they had a animal. He lied when got job and said he did. Now there is a puppy my heart really goes out to. Rita Jean

Move the crates to different rooms. The female won't be able to see what's going on. Give the male his food first, then feed the female a little later. Don't let them out of the crates at the same time.

I agree with Catherine, socialization is a must, but it depends on the personality of the individual dog. When we had 4, they all slept on the bed together and ran together and rarely did we have any problems. We added a puppy and things were still going ok, just really crowded. However, one day our youngest girl decided she was all grown up and didn't want to be bossed around anymore by our 'wanna-be' alpha. Neither of them was a true alpha. We managed to defuse the situation, but a month later it happened again. The girls could never be together again. In fact, the tri developed a predjudice against all red girls after that! Both girls were terrific with people and with Basenji males and even with males and females of other breeds. I had 2 intact males, brothers, who stayed together with absolutely no problem for almost 4 years until one went to another home. They even got along during season. Terry
