My Defective Basenji!

Behavioral Issues
  • I live in the NE, outside Philly, where we were just given a good amount of great packing snow. It's Kylie's (=B) first real snow and while she was not initially thrilled about this cold wet white stuff, I found that to be proper B behaviour. But she came back inside, warmed up a bit, obviously thought about it for a few – you can tell because her little wrinkled furrowed forehead was in overdrive staring outside -- and then whined to go out once again. And she's been whining ever since. Seems she LOVES the snow! I have a defective Basenji -- Help!!

PS - As soon as I can upload some pics, you have GOT to see her just buried in the snow, it's hilarious!

  • No I think there are some on here that like snow. Our B Jaycee liked the 2 inches.
How much snow did you get?

    Rita Jean

  • My Eva loves the stuff. We got over two feet of snow and Eva just barrells through it. At one point she disappeared and came out about a foot away.

  • AJ is a pansy with snow. He'll go out in it to do his biz, but wants nothing else to do with it. He finishes what he's doing then gives me a helpless "how do I get out of this mess" look. Same wrinkled brow…..:D

  • So adorable! She conned me into another long walk in the snow!
Dang, I'm a sucker for that face!

  • BOTH our B's LOVE it. :) buy good snow gear and coats for the dogs. :)

  • We had 2 inches of snow last year and Abbey was fascinated by it but she was terrified of the snowman our neighbors made! Very suspicious of him.

  • I live in Maine - all 3 of mine love the snow. Mine go au naturale - they hate to wear clothes so I just limit their time out in the elements.

  • @Lenora:

Reminds me of when I took AJ across the Puget Sound on the ferry…when we returned to Seattle, it was after dusk. The fireplugs they have in that area look like dwarves with big hats on in the dark. AJ would give each one the widest berth he possibly could and not burrow under the fence. It was the first time I'd ever seen a dog afraid of a fireplug. :D

  • We don't get snow here but Buddy jumps when we walk by all the fake Christmas deer and animals in people's front yards. The funniest is the air controlled Grinch on someone's front lawn that when the air lets in and out it slides in and out of a chimney. He stands there and stares at it.

  • Dan, will be happy to ship your way any and all snow we have this winter.

Both Otis and Moses (podengo donkey, like our friends call him) go crazy when they see those white wire framed deers..I mean crazy, and I am looking like a total idiot of the neighborhood trying to convince them to "leave it" and move on…good luck..
So glad to hear that Buddy is doing the same thing.

Yep, the white wired ones. They must of had a big sale on them. The yards here are full of those one's that have the air pumped into them, they look like miniature Macy's Day Parade balloons.

Oh Rita Jane that's very kind of you. We'll take a few days worth just for the fun of it but that's all. We're babys here in the SF Bay Area. :D

  • I say this just to see if it bites me but it's not as bad here as it was when I grew up. We could get snow any were from Thanksgiving on but usually right after Christmas. We would not see ground again until spring day's never warm enough and then more snow I just would hate snow and winter. At least now we get snow but it is usually gone in a day or two no more than a week. Who knows maybe one day all of you out there can have our weather and we can yours LOL..

We pay big taxes for this weather!

  • ..and I moved here from Sweden to get away from the snow…

and now I miss it, go figure..
I just love to sit inside and see the snow..but I am not that keen on being outside in it..

  • Both of mine like the snow; it's the rain they hate!

  • We've had barely a dusting here but its been cold enough to keep it on the grass. Mr. Annoyance is acting like its "rutting season". In, out, in, out. If I don't jump up to let him out he proceeds to pull at the blanket over my feet, or worse yet, bills/mail on the coffee table (much like teachers, bill collectors won't believe "the dog ate my check"). It's kinda fun though 'cause he's also just more playful in general right now. A couple more weeks and he'll probably hate the cold and snow like every other self respecting Basenji is supposed to….:D Silly Basenjis...don't they know their rep???:)

I can only comment on my experiences with Kipawa, my first basenji, who is just shy of 2 years old. @viv58: 1. OBS #1: they were only affectionate on their terms and didnt like to be petted or picked up.Is this more common than not. They wanted to be by you, but hands off for the most part. 2. OBS#2: Off the leash - they are unpredictable and may not come when called. Had some wild roaming experiences at the off-leash beach. Always kept treats -and 95% of the timeit worked. Can you train them to counter this? or is this a stretch ? 3. OBS#3: Not snuggly 4. OBS#4: Only looked me in the eye when I had food- everything was a distraction. 1. Kipawa is just an extremely affectionate dog. His affection for me is special, but he recognizes all family members and care aides who come into the house and enjoys their attention and gives it back. He loves being petted and adores being massaged, but has a preference for it being from someone in his 'pack' (family members and care aides). He will tolerate being picked up by anyone, but prefers it when I do it. He is a little uncomfortable when turned on his back, however, we practice this quite a bit and he's getting better at it, especially if tummy rubs are included. 2. The only areas Kipawa is off leash is in our backyard or dog parks that are fully fenced. For these places, he is predictable, because he is very used to them. He usually comes when called, but if it doesn't work, I carry the squeaker part of a squeaker toy with me, and that most always brings him back. If he needs to come to me based on an emergency situation (say he got onto a street by accident), I have a word/sound that I only use in emergency situations. He is excellent at responding to that. All this said, if he spotted a bunny in the dog park, I don't think the emergency recall would work. Based on his breeders seeing him this summer, they have indicated he has a very high prey drive. 3. Kipawa is super snuggly all the time and is also a 'velcro dog'. We are tightly bonded. He is on my lap when I watch TV, or at least laying against me. He sleeps under the blankets on my side of the bed. 4. He easily looks me in the eye. If I am talking to him, we have full eye contact. He enjoys when we give each other 'soft eyes' - the slow blinking a person/dog might do when fully relaxed or before settling down for a nap. If he is distracted (only happens outside) I use the command 'watch me' to get eye contact. Usually 95% success rate, but that would go down to zero should he see a bunny. I can't answer your other questions. Kipawa will be a solo dog in our home. As for the breeders, his breeders were Therese and Kevin Leimback (FoPaws Basenjis) from Washington state. We researched for a year before selecting them. Their breeding program concentrates a great deal on temperament. Hope this helps.

Unlike other breeds male basenjis go through rut. It does not matter if there are females around or not, when fall hits, the boys' brains turn to mush as they go into rut. My male is much easier now that he is neutered but he still knows the reason for the season.

Just wanted to let you know that we put Harley's crate in our bedroom last night, and she stayed quiet until i got up around 8:00 this morning (it's Saturday, so of course that is much later than usual)! Yay! We'll see if it stays that way, but maybe she really was just lonely. Thanks for the advice guys!

You know, my boyz like dogs the same color as they are. Jet LOVES tri colored dogs - Berners, tri Aussies, etc. And last time they were at Anne's dog park, poor Digital was the only brindle basenji. Jet played with the basenjis and Diggie went and hung out with a brindle greyhound. Remember that Anne?
