Choosing a breeder, health issues

    I'm in the process of choosing a breeder, and because I'm 100% set on getting a tri girl I'm somewhat limited.

    One breeder I've found are going to breed this dog: http://koti.welho.com/outantti/ajibu/amaliaa.htm with this one:http://koti.welho.com/outantti/ajibu/georgea.htm

    and

    This: http://koti.welho.com/outantti/ajibu/ellaa.htm with http://koti.welho.com/outantti/ajibu/faruka.htm .

    As you can see in both cases one of the parents is a probable Fanconi carrier, and one of the parents have some form of PPM. Is this a bad idea?

    With one clear and one carrier, you will not get Fanconi as the pups will be either only a carrier or a clear, so no worries there… the pups must of course be tested so that is it known which are carriers and which are clear especially for breeding later on. And minor PPM is not a problem either.

    Note: I looked at the pedigrees and the Dam of Daydreamer is listed as a American AKC champion, she has NOT as of today completed those requirements. She still needs one major to finish her championship. (Stallian Tanza Tri The Obvious)

    I don't think that anyone from the states would be able to tell you that, at least I know that I can not…. maybe someone from Europe that has recently purchased a pup would give you an idea...

    Have you contacted the Finnish club to ask them ?? I found most of the breeders there to be very helpful. Last year I purchased my pup on the mainland for a little over a thousand Euros, which is pretty standard to my knowledge. Janneke is closer to you, she might have a good estimate.

    Prices will probably be no less then a thousand euros. That's what a b-puppy will cost in the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Don't know about Finland though.

    Btw.. I think Klassic's Daydream Believer is a real looker!

    Hi Eoy. I too was set on a tri but didn't end up with one. I truly hope you find a wonderful tri female, but don't sacrifice other important things for coat color - you might miss out on a really cool B. I promise you will adore your basenji, no matter what color she is, especially if she is your first! Best wishes for a painless search!

    I have no doubt that Marjukka would be easy for you to talk to and I believe her puppies go for the 'average' for her area.
    Her dogs are all completely tested and all within the parameters that Finnish breeders must follow.

    I second that, do not limit yourself to a particular color… you might miss out on a great puppy!

    Just as an update, I've been in contact with Marjukka and hopefully I'll be getting a tri girl this winter. I was also at my first basenji show today, and Klassic's Daydream Believer (Faruk) came first, not only in his group but overall (sorry I don't know the correct terms).

    I hope to be able to post some pictures here in some months :)

    The FDA can only do what the laws allow and if the govt is controlled by lobbyist, well.... But this isn't the place for politics so I'll leave it at that. I am very sorry about your horse. :( With meat.. it's particularly red meat that research is linking to cancer... early research shows amount is a big factor (recommendations from 4 oz a day to max 18 oz a week), but who knows. Processed meat is the worse, and I saw some headline (didn't bother to read since I like my beef shortly after it stops mooing) that well done steaks more carcinogenic. For the world, reducing red meat is good for the environment and health. I was reading a study last week on red meat and joint inflammation. Studies the last 15 years actually only have general connection, but that most do is a pretty good indicator. I had a doctor tell me to stop all red meat and milk when I was a teen and experiencing joint pain. It helped, but back then, no internet and not much access to current research. Here we are 45+ years later, and still no strong proof and some show that reducing carbs with increased LEAN red meat actually decreased inflammation. However, we then get this Science Catch-up. Red Meat And Gut Inflammation: Harvard Study ... https://thehealthsciencesacademy.org/science-catch-up/science-catch-up-28/ Jan 18, 2017 - Red meat and gut inflammation: Harvard study. According this new Harvard study involving 46,500 participants, eating high amounts of red meat daily might be a risk factor for gut inflammation and the development of diverticulitis. << So no one has absolute proof, but my money is on reducing red meat is more likely to be healthier than not. I just don't rule out all meat (ie fish and fowl) as getting enough protein is pretty hard and we don't have enough hard research for ME to go vegetarian. But I'm open to it and glad you are having success.

    @Patty: Personally I would take her to the vet to get her checked out for bowel or urinary infections. If she is losing sight and hearing she may be frightened. It sounds as though you need to step back a pace to calm your reactions. I can appreciate that you are getting fed up with all the work but she is an old dog. My present oldie (15) has taken to peeing (and pooing) indoors at times but I know I need to put her outside more often as she doesn't have the control she once had. She has also become blind and is certainly more aggressive with the others because of that. Any way first things first and do take her to the vet, please. Let us know how you get on. I have to agree with everything Patty wrote. Changing behavior ALWAYS needs a vet check. Increase aggresssion can be due to thyroid issues, pain, tick-born diseases, constant hunger (due to other things), etc. You didn't say in your post if you'd recently seen a vet and discussed her new issues. My oldest (16 in December) has failing kidneys (nonFanconi) and does need to pee more often. So, I put pee pads down in the house in his favorite pee spots. He's usually pretty good about that, but he does still pee in other spots if I'm not watching him carefully or if he gets a bit aggitated about the sitting arrangements. Would your pup stay in an exercise pen? That would give her a little more room than a crate.

    Pat, yeah, it was many but the specialist from GA (who does CERF btw, or did, could be retired at this point) said all were iris to iris and none should cause her issues. But you can still see them. I am comforted to know that a lot of strands don't pass as I honestly don't remember seeing that limitation, only on placement. Been a long time since I looked at CERF. But the issue was and then, the person LIED. She sent me a puppy for my child, who already had more on her than any child should with my health issues, that she obviously had no clue about– a puppy she had no clue about it's eye health. And then wanted her back if I wasn't going to breed her as she would. Yeah, over my dead body.

    @dcmclcm4: What kind of autoimmune problem does she have? Does she have any other eye problem or just the PPM strands? Jennifer @sharronhurlbut: So when you see blue eyes on a b, its PPM strands? Sayblee had autoimmune issues and had multiple surgeries to remove inflammations. She died 9/9/09 from Lymphoma after 5 mos of failed chemotherapy protocols. I actually posted about it here, think I even put up pictures. Arwen only has massive PPM strands. She will be 8 in 2 wks, thus far has been healthy as a horse otherwise. When I say blue, I don't mean REALLY blue as in pigment. I meant just so many strands they have very blue cast and you can easily see the strands in the light. The UGA eye specialist doing CERF said.. "wow, I haven't seen this many strands in a very long time!" He asked me to bring him back to him, FREE, to see how many went away after a year. Some did but she still has heavy strands.

    You know, at his age (and in my opinion) any elder dog, the goal is to get them to eat and keep them eating… so I don't stress out about kcal's too much particularly since I use Vit Supplements.

    @ramseyclea: I didn't know incontinence was one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. So, I'm kind of glad to hear that. I know the weight gain and low energy level are definitely symptoms (I suffer from hypothyroidism myself). I will tell the vet to do the ful panel. Thanks for all the advice! This is such a great resource! There are many things that can be a result of low thyroid…. maybe not directly connected, but a off shoot of the condition. My OJ was loaded with hives... and regardless of what we gave him they would come back over and over... finally tested his thyroid and it was very, very low... put him on Soloxine and never another hive.... so while hives is not generally a symtom of low thyroid, the fact that it lowered immunities in other respects, hives popped up.... Not saying this is the cause... but again her age is pretty young for this problem, IMO. So best to rule out other things before moving on to hormones... and again I would still not rule out a UTI
