I am looking for someone to stay with my 2 Basenji's in my apartment while I am traveling September 7th thru 14th.
We live uptown Manhattan, just below the Cloisters, and my boys are 10 + 11.5 years, very friendly and easy to be with.
They need 3 walks a day (around the amazing Fort Tryon Park, across the street for our house), can be left during daytime
for 8-9-ish hours, eat once a day at night and need no medication. We live one block from the A-train for easy access to downtown.
I will be living in Guyana, South America for a year and are bringing along my 2 B's,
and are now looking for advice on heart worm and tick/flea protection.
The vets I have spoken to in Guyana say there is no point in using FrontLinePlus
or similar (which I have used since their birth) as the ticks and mosquitos are so much more resistant and aggressive there. I live a very active life with my B's and spend a lot of time hiking and being with my dogs outdoors, and do of course plan to do the same while in Guyana,
but are getting somewhat concerned that my dogs will get all these insect bites and ticks
that I cannot protect them from. We lived in Florida for a couple of years so I am familiar with the climate and how to take care of the B's, but realize that the South American environment is so much more intense.
I look forward to hearing from you!
one of my B's have had lifelong allergy to corn and grains, and now suddenly chicken.
When he was a bit over a year old a vet gave him benadryl and steroids which turned him into an agressive and constantly urinating dog, so I stopped all medications. For a period I applied Animax when the blisters were too bad, but it only helps the topical issue, not the deeper reason for the allergy. Since then I have given him a table spoon of local honey with yogurt every morning, and The Honest Kitchen food (currently the Zeal version) and I havent seen one sign of the severe outbrakes he had before.
He is now 8 years old. Eventually he picks up something he finds under a bush on the walk which usually is a chicken part (afterall he is a Basenji) so then I use the Animax for a day or two, then it is gone.
I hope you find your way to help your B.
The ultra sound cleaning would be great, but here in NYC that is nowhere to be found…so the bill for each dog lands on $750+...and with 3 chewing boys (2 brothers and one rescue) it picks up pretty fast...so I am relieved that My oldest is the oly one with the periodontal...so far...
Hello, Pat! Wow, so it really must depend on so many different aspects how their dental health develops…all My 3 B's does yearly cleaning so that is why I an so surprised it suddenly happend now and not before...but to Your point, reaching all the way back is like putting your fingers in a horizontal food processor...
Hello, I had My olderst B do dental cleaning at the vet today,
and he came back diagnosed with severe periodontal disease and had 2 teeth's pulled…I was somewhat taken by the fact that despite trying to brush his teeth's (which not always is a particularily successful project) he got this diagnose...He is 7 years old and I have never had an "older/ageing" dog before (My other ones are 5 and 3) so please, would someone tell Me if this is something common with the B's, or if I have just failed to keep him in shape...I feel horrible to have caused him so much pain today, because he is still laying in his bed whining, dizzy and sedated...
