Question

Maya was shut in her crate in the kitchen with her chicken carcass and chicken wings for breakfast this morning. I know because i checked and double checked.
Question….
How did she come to be curled up fast asleep on the sofa in the living room when i went home at lunchtime to let them out for a pee?

I think that is the problem, she usually is! I only put her in a crate cos i was running late this morning and she eats her carcasses and wings so much faster than the others and steals theirs :rolleyes:
I guess she just got bored of being in there? :confused:

It took a few weeks but Gossy learned to unlock her crate door (I caught her doing it once) - she would push the handle outward and manage to wiggle it enough to back it out of the catch. (Basenjis most certainly are intelligent)

When I am in a hurry and crating the dogs, I have on occasion not actually locked the crate fully and they have escaped. The worst side effect of this happening is that they learn that they can get out. Rio can now escape almost every crate I own unless I use the x-pen clips to clip the doors shut.

Ha, ha…I have done that too. I have closed the door and slid the latch, but it didn't go thru the hasp; I have also just left the door wide open...Luna stayed in her crate all morning one time with the door open...it was such a routine that I don't think she even noticed :)

I put Chance in a crate at a show last year and shut the door, went off to do some shopping and have a cup of tea. When I came back, there he was sleeping in his crate. Then I noticed that the side door was wide open!! :eek:
Bless him, he hadn't even noticed and had slept in the crate quite the thing. :)
Now I am extra careful at checking BOTH doors are shut properly. -
Wow, so far Otis hasn't figured that one out…I hope it stays that way..LOL. I have started to fiddle with the locks, but nothing yet. I guess we have to wait and see if he is as smart as he looks..

What is so funny about Rio is that she really doesn't mind her crate. In the car once she is in her crate she will stay there even if I haven't shut the door. At home, I think she just likes to escape because she can and then she naps in the bed, her favorite place.

I came home a few days ago and a little blur went by the window. I thought, "Gee, Diggie's moving quickly today". (Digital has always had full house priviliges and is now 12 years old.) Nope, that was Zest at the door. Nothing was amiss, but I have no idea how long she'd been out of her crate.

Ha! Same here…I've also completely forgotten to close the door (for some reason it is always Ruby's crate that I screw up on). Ruby is smart enough to not try to get out (or simply walk out the door) while I'm crating Brando. I think she waits until I close the bedroom door and then she just takes all her treats and toys up on the bed. Smart kid.

My old girl has never been happy in a crate unless she has a companion in with her. When she was a baby I persevered and persevered. I eventually gave up after two years having put her in the crate with two catches and a padlock. She managed to collapse the whole front of the crate and squeeze out over the end!! I've a feeling she may have passed this crate phobia on to some of her descendants!!

This is off the subject of crate escape… I was told growing up that turkey and chicken bones were very dangerous for dogs. Are Basenjis different in this way too? Or am I missing something...

Raw, uncooked bones are fine for any dog, not just Basenjis… it is "cooked" bones that are the problems
