• Fritos here too. I figure a dog that looks as yummy as ours had to smell as yummy too.

  • @bcraig:

Thanks to the B forum for answering those questions so quickly. Love the close up pic of Basenji feet.

My wife now admits that corn chips are a better description of what Ella smells like. She gets that smell from her coat. I have never tried smelling her feet.

Probably has to do with their paws resting against their coat in areas.

  • I checked Tayda and Lennys paws and they are not as joined as the picture you posted, but they don't appear to be totally separate…

  • I know when breeders were discussing this a while ago there seemed to be a bit of variance too. Mine are like yours Michelle. The very tops/surface of the pad isn't necessarily joined, but all along the side of the rear of the two middle pads are fused so those can't be separated as much as the outer toes, which have some skin in between them.

  • hmmm…. i wonder why ours are the same... 😃

  • Yup, fritos.

  • My B smells like fritos too… but only his feet. I notice it the most when he bats at me to get out of bed in the morning.

  • popcorn. Our dogs feet smell like popcorn. A guy I work with is married to a vet. He called her at work one morning when we were having this convo and she confirmed that puppy feet smell like popcorn….

  • I love the smell of my babies feet. I think the best description is popcorn. Warm and sweet. Do any of your Bs have tickly feet. I put my finger in between the pads and stroke the soft furr and it tickles.;)

  • Corn chips - fritos - peanuts - wish my dogs feet smelled like that - every time we go out she commences digging, and even after a nice bath, her feet pretty much smell like warm dirt! Her coat doesn't really smell at all, except aloe and oatmeal after her bath. I've seen pictures here on the forum of nice pink foot pads - no matter how I scrub, Shaye's feet never get that way any more.

I just checked my B's feet and they are definitely joined but so is our Schnorkie's feet much less though, and our Doxies feet are barely joined like our hands have that skin between the fingers…and yes they do smell like fritos, yumm-o. As far as Otis' general smell, like straw or something that, very faint and pleasant.

All B's have the web feet. Apparently this trait is uaually found in water breeds? I found a list on the internet about webbed paws when my family was picking the dog for us.

Basenjis do not have web feet?

  • yeah….they shouldn't have webbed feet like a water dog. Some do have the toe pads of the middle toes fused but not all.

I've never seen webbed feet on a basenji. Of my 3, Ruby & Liyah have the middle toe pads fused, Brando does not.

  • First Basenji's

Sorry everyone, I did mean the two front toes on the paws. I didn't mean webbed feet, Sorry for ruffling featers 🙂

I mis typed, sorry. webbed toes on the paws. Orginial Basenjis taken to England in the 1930's were said to have connected toe pads. I refered to them as webbed, but I understand that it not acturate. Sorry Again 🙂

  • As an Italian and salami eater….all my dogs feet smelt like salami even my new basenji pup Duna. And i dont mean the salami slices,,,but the whole thing on the outside!!!!
But i love the smell ( stink) ha-ha!!!

  • I totally noticed that paw thing the day we rescued Starla!! As for corn chips 🙂
Can anyone tell me if Basenjis can "spray," though? We've noticed that if Starla is doing something naughty or if she's nervous, she makes a skunky smell. ... I googled it and didn't pull anything up. Thanks a bunch!!!
