Basenjis for sale

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • wow, that seems like a lot, especially considering what goes into a good litter.

  • Yes, especially when you only breed a litter because you plan to keep a puppy and all your dogs are housedogs.

  • @JazzysMom:

My guess is that she isn't aware that she IS using another breeder's name.

Maybe not but I hope she reads this and refrains from using it from this point on.

  • Yes, she recently sent me a friend request which I accepted. I suspected BYB also, I asked her a question about how long she had been breeding Basenjis. I was trying to get a response and dig a little deeper, but she never responded to my question… which made me even more suspicious. I left her as my friend for future reference, interesting she popped up here!

  • BTW, the only Basenji breeder I knew of in WV (until now) is in Proctor, WV… Bethany of Rosewood Kennels. Oh, and a girl named Melisa in Proctor... I'm not sure if she and Rosewood are in some way connected, but Melisa claims to breed and show Basenjis...

  • Dolores has been around awhile.
Karen Hutchinson has co-bred with her.
Dolores got a puppy from Lisa A [Itzyu] last year.
He is a littermate to my Bebe [also from Lisa].

Unfortunately, this girl probably got her dogs from the PM in Keota, OK and most likely they aren't even AKC registered…

My guess is you're thinking of Melisa Skillman? (Her last name might be different now.) If so, then yes she is also a breeder/exhibitor, Dija Basenjis. Her dogs have a similar pedigree as Beth's dogs and they do work together sometimes. I don't know all the details but I do know they associate with each other, more now than in the past. Melisa used to live in Ohio and I've seen her around quite a bit. Been a while though since we've talked.

I think that's the Melisa I am speaking of, I'm glad you metioned the name of her Co. (Dija Basenjis). It sounds very familiar, I had just never put the two together in my head… There aren't many Basenji Breeders in my state!

  • Melisa is totally legit, and a really nice woman :) I think she currently lives with (and works for?) Beth on her farm. They both breed Basenjis under different kennel names.

  • Well, keep us posted if you all learn more about the person who posted this.

  • I agree. :) Thanks Andrea, I know she had lived with Beth for a while, but not sure if she still was, or just nearby.

I'll see if I can get anything out of her. She claims to work at an "interactive exotic zoo"… If so one would only hope she's wise enough to test the parents for fanconi, etc., but you never know about people… And you would think if she read any of this and is legit she would respond! However, we have gotten NO response which leads me even more to think she is not legit.:(

  • Certainly obvious that she didn't have a waiting list for puppies before breeding….

  • I had a response on Myspace – she doesn't have "kennel" per se, she has one female and this is her first litter. She said the dam's Fanconi test is pending. She also said she was unaware that there was already a Mystical Basenjis and thought she was being original as her bitches name is "Hilas Mystical Light". She said she will probably try to come up with a new name.

  • I got a response, too (I'd say BYB):

…The female's akc name is hilas mystical light, the sire is WLS todd...

(I was afraid of that, the WL line is heavily linked with fanconi!):(

Did you tell her that his line is linked?

How sad that he was bred at this time, with all the info. available.

  • Even sadder that she did the breeding prior to doing any health testing. She now has puppies on the ground almost ready to go to new homes and still doesn't know the results of the parents let alone have the puppies tested. No buyer should accept a puppy from untested parents without seeing the puppy's own test results. That will take an additional 4-6 weeks so pups will be 12-14 weeks old.

Yes, but sadly who in the general population has a clue? Sometimes the only information they have is what they are told by the breeder, and if you have a bad breeder….... the cycle continues.

Like this young lady. She apparently bought a cute dog, was given limited information, I would guess didn't have a spay clause in the contract, if there even was a contract, and thought it'd be fun to have puppies.

Most people don't think to research a breed before buying. I mean,
honestly, I wouldn't have researched Basenjis a whole lot if I hadn't simply stumbled on information while looking for a local breeder. If I stumbled on a site that had great information that clued me on as to what to ask about and look for in a breeder. I was just looking for someone to buy a dog from, which is what most people are doing.

  • I am sorry but the information is posted all over the place. It is on the websites of responsible breeders, it is on the BCOA website, it is on affiliate club sites. If the general public is going to buy a dog they should do their research. The majority of inquiries that I get the people know to ask so actually there are LOTS of people doing at least some amount of research even if it is only visiting a couple of websites.

  • One of the things that I find amazing is how many people actually want to breed their dog. Having really gotten to know some breeders, the responsibility of it all just seems overwhelming to me. Even done half-a$$ed (without research, planning, testing, visits from prospective buyers, waiting lists etc.), it is still a ton of work, care, and responsibility. I just can't imagine not feeling responsibility to do it right.

I just wanted to respond to this thread. I hope everything is going good with you and things are working out. The thing I wanted to respond to was the thought that a man may have abused him since he does not do well with men. A basenji can make their mind up about disliking something for no reason at all. My first Basenji was with me from 6 weeks of age and never had a man abuse him and at two years old decided he hated men for the next two years. I kept him socialized and kept getting men to feed him pet him while I had him stacked and holding his head, had them talk to him, go over hime etc. after a while his dislike left as quickily as it came. I have had a few dogs do this sort of stuff between 12 and 18 months I call it the stupid stage, they all the sudden don't like men, women, the grooming table, the trash can outside etc. It is important to work them through their fear so they can be a complete dog. Just think how it would be for you if say you were scared of men but had to see them daily just think how stressful your life would be. I hope if you keep him you help him get through this or if you place him please be honest with the new owners and recommend that they get him out and work him through this.

None now until next winter. Basenjis are once a year girls. Your research should tell you that😀

@sharronhurlbut: Pat, I am not a "fan" of low cost spay/neuter places either…BUT IMO, they are less of a risk than having an intact basenji placed in the general public. I will post an article I just received re pet owners and getting their pets fixed in my next post. Re this note, to me, having the dog fixed at one of these places is the lesser of 2 evils. Yeah…what she said!

@roxandsweet: male vs. female registerable vs. non-registerable different colors Interesting, responsible breeders don't price according to color or sex. And AKC frowns on the practice of charging more for the papers, as do responsible breeders.
