My puppy wont let me sleep (and some more serious problems)

  • @Danny:

    That IS interesting.

And Tayda, remember how clear that water was and how you'd be on the water and you'd have beautiful mountains all around?? Man, makes me want to drive to Fajardo and take that boat that takes you to the island :D

We did stay in San Juan. My husbands family is from PR, but most live in Brooklyn now. They just sold his grandmothers home. I am not sure of the city though. There is a primate research facility that I want to see. My husband has also been to Vieques which he said was stunningly beautiful. Once the landmines are cleared out, that is going to be an amazing tourist area.

I miss the Quesitas. (I think that is how you say it.)

  • I am glad to hear that you plan to do you your research before you decide to breed. It is important to know that some of that research is things that should been done before selecting a puppy. I am glad to hear that his parents were tested for Fanconi, what were their results? Did you verify them on the OFA website, http://www.offa.org? There are some breeders who are telling their buyers that their dogs have been tested but in reality they only did urine strip testing and have no idea what the dogs DNA status is. Also, since you are thinking about breeding Rocky in the future it is important to know his family health history for all the major inherited diseases in the breed. The 4 minimum recommended tests by the Basenji Club of America are Hips by OFA, Eyes by CERF, Thyroid (OFA panel), Fanconi Marker Test. If the testing was done all of the results should be on the OFA site.

  • The parents only have the fanconi tests done… is that enouth?

    This is the mom

    http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1329198#animal

    This is dad

    http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1329199#animal

It says something about the offspring probably being affected with fanconi on the dads… wtf?!

  • I might be completely wrong (that website confuses me!!) but i think that it is one of the dads offspring that is affected but he himself is clear/normal so presumably they mated him to an affected bitch??

  • This means I guess you got your pup from Phil in Colorado? There have been problems with Phil's dogs and their "real" parentage. What you see on the sire's side is proof of that problem. There is no way that two clear parents can have an affected offspring. I happen to know that DNA parentage was done and it was proved that this is not the sire and dam of this particular puppy. So I would be very concerned that the sire and dam on your puppy may not be what the registration papers say.

Also to your question about tests, there are many, many other health tests that should be done. Please visit www.basenji.org and/or www.basenjihealth.org

  • Actually, that isn't what it means. A true Probably Clear can not produce an an Affected. If bred to an Affected, a Probably Clear dog will have all Carrier offspring.

What it means is that somewhere there was an error either in the lab, in the sample submission, or in the pedigree. Medjai is owned by Etzbseder, who is on this forum and may be able to fill people in on where they are at as far as identifying which of the above possibilities or combination there of may be the reason for the result.

  • BTW, Phil is a member of this board. His screenname is cripplecreekphil, I know because thats his email name to. He's never posted though…

Yes, many of us know that and what we are writing is correct information. There is a litter of his that has incorrect parents listed.

  • I guess i should put in my opinion as I have had the most personal experience with Phil. I think you should NOT breed the pup though based on what I know about the registration issues and such, and a few other pups of his.

Also, you won't know yet, but I doubt that the pup will fit the breed standard well enough for you want to breed him anyway. Sorry to burst the bubble there, but from what I've come across his pups do have GREAT personalities. If you socialize this pup well, he will be a great basenji with a pretty even temperament.

  • Although I would like to breed in the future, having a healthy and happy dog is my number 1 priority.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

  • Oh, affected is BAD!

  • Welcome :) I am glad you are enjoying your new puppy, the pictures are adorable!
That's great that you are working towards your teaching degree. I am a middle school Language Arts (English) teacher too, middle school is such a fun age, I absolutely love it! I always thought I'd want elementary, but a job opened up in middle school when I got out of college, and 5 years later I wouldn't trade it for anything else! Do you plan on staying in Puerto Rico to teach?
And yes, you are definitely making everyone here (well, the ones that live in cold climates anyways) jealous with your talk of all the beautiful weather you have. Today it was 35 here and it felt like a heat wave, compared to the below zero we've had since god-knows-when. Although we do have the pretty snow, you are definitely missing out on that :)

  • He is just toooooooo cute

If you have an adult dog in the household, it will save you a lot of grief. The adults will usually put manners on the pup. I have yet to hear an adult "yelp", but sure have seen them snarl and pin the little so-and-so down momentarily, and when released the pup is usually a bit chastened and leaves the adult alone for awhile. Some need more convincing than others! Lady used to snarl in Tamu's face while holding her down, and watching her is what started me using the "bear hug" (minus the snarling) to correct this behaviour.

My sister is also a nurse. She used to organize flu clinics, and one thing that was mandated was that there was a loaded syringe of epinephrine handy. I hear you about the cost of office visits! My horse vet will come to the farm and wrestle with 3 horses floating teeth, give a couple of shots to each, and the bill is less than my Basenji's routine office visit!!! Ridiculous!

@lvoss: It has been raining most of the day here and L'Ox has been unenthusiastic to say the least about going outside. He has been doing really well on potty training and is starting to ask to go out but you could tell every time he actually got outside he was horrified by all the wet. So his remedy was to run to the edge of the covered porch and pee and rush back in. His dilemma was how to do the rest of his business without melting in the rain? So while I was in the kitchen gathering up the dog dishes I hear a clatter and see a little puppy butt escaping into the garage through the cat door. I follow him out there only to find him pooping near the cat's litter box. I guess I should be glad that he seems to be using his brain for good rather than evil right now. My little girl was like that but got out of the habit. She realized that going in the house was naughty (she wouldn't go on the toilet training mats we got her) and even though she hated her feet wet she went on the grass anyway and when she came inside she did the basenji thing and she licked it off her feet.

@Lenora: He sounds pretty typical basenji to me Cheryl. They want to be where you, and make themselves completely comfortable on you. Abbey used to be a terrible mouther when she was little (she's 3 now) and I taught her No Bite. Kiss. When she'd start to mouth at my hand or whatever, I'd say No Bite, Kiss, and she would give me a little lick instead. I too use the No Bite, Kisses and he is getting there. If he gets too rough, I just pull away and ignore him, it doesn't take long before he will reach over and give a gentle kiss. I am having so much fun with him. He is the most loving dog I have ever owned and we are learning lots from each other. Yesterday he "saved" me from the UPS truck! He saw it pull up outside on the curb and he set off with a series of barks that hit a pitch that hurt! Of course once he saw the man get out, he was all wiggles and wanting to play with him. :)
