Having the Flu with Basenji's

Basenji Talk

  • I had the flu the last 4 days and was pretty much bed ridden- Thus the tail of two Basenjis, Naughty & Nice

Nice, is our girl, who became my Nana through the whole thing. She spent every minute by my side to comfort and keep me warm. Great dog, so gentle & kind. My new "favorite".

Then we have Mr Naughty, who spent most the time in his crate (at least while my wife was at work). All he cares about is himself and since I was sick, opportunity abounds! He could not go on walks, he had a lot of boredom to contend with.

Being sick with Mr Naughty was a pain in the butt, but great time spent with Mrs Nice. Basenji's are like people in that you get complete opposites.

  • I hope you are feeling better! The flu stinks :( Glad you had Nice to take care of you when Naughty was…being naughty. lol

  • Thanks, I'm on the mend but..

The whole runny nose tissue thing. Mr Naughty tricks you into stealing them.

No, really, he just wanted snuggle. The tissue he grabbed at last instance was just chance!

I ended up using a pair of socks to "plug" the tissues in my pockets!

Nice was very comforting, far better than any electric warmer-If only a Basenji could purr

    Grunting will do I guess.

  • I remember a thread about someone finding out that the new vicks scented tissues are a basenji repellent. This may keep the naughty from running away with your tissues. I personally chose kerceifs instead, but I guess that probably doesn't work when you're using them every few seconds.

  • I just recently had the flu also. My little Roo(7 mths) stayed in bed with me and we just napped the whole day, which is very strange for him because he has alot of energy. Maybe he knew I was sick?

  • Glad you're feeling a little better. Dakota used to be a great nurse. I haven't been really sick in a few years, knock on wood, I think I would end up with a naughty and nice too.

  • Now that I am better and back to Mr Naughty's regular walks, he is back to normal. Just rested on the floor all night, no trouble.

Walks mean everything to Mr Naughty to keep him being a good dog.

  • Fighting the flu with Basenji's does help a little…....I still feel like crap:( .

I did manage to take this picture yesterday.......what a face.:D

  • I had the flu a few weeks ago, and Senji couldn't understand why I couldn't take him out for walks. Fortunately, my dad was able to walk him for me, but Senji still likes the way I walk him better! :D Much of the time I was sick, he either laid in the hallway outside the bedroom door or laid at the foot of my bed. Yes, they DO know when we are sick!

  • I love that picture Basenji Boy…. what a great shot... and I can just hear the swear words....

Right in the middle of the state.

  • I think the rest of your B's are going to miss them too.

  • I don't have the flu but I am home from work today because I am going to get a shot in my foot to kill a nerve. I am nervous beyond words and Chase and Zahra have been cuddled up with me all morning which really has helped to keep me calm. I wonder if the podiatrist would mind them coming into the office with me for the shot? :D

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

We have two cats and two Basenji?s, but the basenji?s grew up with the oldest cat. They live togehter as a family, but the first meeting between Buana (oldest Basenji) and Spaik (oldest cat) was heavy Spaik was so mad at us he went under the bed and didn't show himselfe, when Buana got to close he hit Buana. Cats usually need time to get used to them, for you I think you need to watch them the first weeks constantly. From their behavior you can see how it's goint between them

Totally agree with Pat. I have two intact female B's. They are NOT the best of friends and have to be watched constantly. They are never alone together. Yes, they've gotten into knock-down drag-out fights. I've been in the ring with slit throats, chewed up ears, scabs, etc. Not a good idea at all. I can control it simply because I watch them constantly and when they start to show signs of aggression, one goes into the crate. But it's not easy, it's stressful on everyone, and I really don't recommend it.

BBOB-whew! So glad that you've done some homework with them. We've had too many abandoned B's lately that I can't bear it anymore. Like Andrea it depends on what they've gotten themselves into during the day like pretty flowers, grass or flowering trees…then I'm in trouble. :)

@spitfirekrl1: He doesn't seem to mind much he pretty much ignores it except when she pins him and he ends up on his back. Then he'll start snapping at her face which doesn't seem to steer her away from her objective (we have no idea what that is at this point). When she pins him she wants submission. She wants him to not struggle and nip and he should calm before she lets him go. Momma dogs do this to their puppies, it is part of puppy education. They do it most to the puppies that are the most pushy usually. In our last litter, Zeke always expected to get his way and he was the one who was pinned by both mom and Rio the most. He learned that by submitting he was allowed to go back to play. When he crossed the line, by playing too rough or invading the adults personal space he was pinned. He learned the limits to play and how to behave appropriately with adults from this. The other pups would get the same treatment but less because they didn't push those boundaries as much.

I wash my dogs teeth every day. On beginning was hard…they do not like this-however I can this make. Care about teeth is very important-I use paste-STOMAGEL and Petosan.
