Basenji + ? other dog breeds ?

Moved Basenji Talk
  • I was told our mixed dog is a Basenji mix. After researching the Basenji, I'm fairly sure she is. But can anyone out there help me identify what other breed(S) she might be?

  • Do a DNA test. They aren’t too expensive.
That will tell you the breeds she is

  • She is a cutie but not sure about the basenji aspect based on her colouring, ears, tail and coat. I'm seeing some lab in her but as was mentioned a dna test is the best idea. All that said she looks like a real sweetheart and deserves all the belly rubs!!

  • Her face and head look Basenji to me. Does she have other Basenji characteristics?

  • Yes, she has a curly tail, makes figure 8s when she is walked and yodels (in addition to barking.![alt text](image url)

  • How tall is she and what does she weigh? A side view standing would be useful. Is she fairly square like a Basenji? When she barks, is it one or two separated barks, or a series? Some Basenjis do bark, but usually just once or twice when startled, not a string of barks. (Of course, whatever the mix is could affect this). As stated, you need DNA to be sure. Maybe Lab, but it doesn't jump out at me. I used to know a German Shepherd cross that looked a bit like her, including the colour.

  • @layla She is a very sweet Dog. If you really want to go to the expense to find out what she is then you should satisfy your curiosity. I would just love to have a sweet Dog like yours but then again I have a weakness for Hounds of all types!

Good luck and be happy you have her!

  • Oh thank you. I am!

Thanks so much for your input. When I get her DNA results,Iwill be sure to post them here. I have seen other Basenji mixes, and she seems to resemble most the Basenji-Yellow Labs the most. But we will see!

Thanks Marty. She is a cutie. She does seem to resemble the Basenji-Yellow Lab combo the most. When I get the DNA test results I'll post them, (in the next few months-I'm in no big hurry.)

  • @layla I am constantly wondering how these mixes happen. A Lab is a big dog and Basenjis are tiny by comparison. It is rather mind-boggling! Nevertheless you have a very sweet Dog! Also a VERY lucky Dog. :)

My 90 pound Rottweiler bitch backed her behind up to my bed to let our neutered rescue poodle hump her. My then 9 yr old daughter had a serious talk with both of them, lol. I saw a saint bernard bitch lie down for a chihuahua (owners not paying attention.. I yelled for them to look, lol).

Where there's a will there's a way fits with dogs in heat.

  • Yes, like you said where there's there's a will there's a way. That's hilarious about the St. Bernard and the chihuahua"

I am not sure where you got your information, but no, breeding a dog or cat or horse or cow or pig or any mammal to another breed does one thing only-- produces mixed offspring that time. When you breed to another purebred, those offspring are not "ruined bloodlines". They are just as pure as before.

IOW, if your XYZ show queen mates with Mr Doodles, the neighborhood stray, the kittens produced are mixed. Obviously not XYZ purebreds.
Next time, you breed your XYZ queen to a purebred XYZ tom, the kittens produced are PUREBRED XYZ. Their bloodline isn't ruined. They have no dna from the previous litter.

@scewbydoo One of our vet techs volunteers with the shelter where she was born. Her mom was labeled as Jack Russell. Her goofy nature makes me think Boxer mix, but who knows. The shelters down in S. TX aren't the most accurate at breed identification. I once had a shelter in San Antonio send me a picture of a brindle Basenji they wanted me to pull...it was a calico cat. Regardless of breed, Roxy is home.

First, thank you for the honest evaluation of your situation. Basenjis are dogs that consider who they live wit, to be part of their pack - family. They only chew or destroy things when they are bored, or mad at you. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!”) A young basenji, under say, 8 years, will do this when left alone for so long. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!) You write that you live with 3 roommates. You do not mention if this will change, so I will assume it will not. Personally, I think it is very unkind (to them AND the dog) of you to bring a basenji into this living arrangement. Unless ALL the roommates understand, and agree, to sharing their lives with a dog that will require so much of their time. The tiniest thing left on the floor could be destroyed, and could even harm the dog. Bathroom doors left open? A basenji might not be able to find anything as much fun, grab the toilet paper, and run. Fun, fun, fun!!! For the dog. You are researching enough to show that you are checking really well to see if a basenji will fit into your life. In my opinion, not just yet. Maybe later when your life has settled a bit. Oh, just remembered you mentioning you studying, the dog doing its thing. It might happen, but if the dog thinks your attention should be on him/her, you may not like that something. Best of luck in your studies, and with where ever your life leads you!

My mix is just a little shorter, and there's a similar thread going on here right now. As I say in that one, only DNA can tell you. https://basenjiforums.com/topic/14838/i-know-you-are-tired-of-being-asked/5 -Joanne

My mum has one of these, though a bit different.A good friend of hers, sadly no longer with us of the Taysenji Basenjis brought it back for her when she spent time living in Zambia many years ago. It will be passed down to me when my mum is no longer here as it has sentimental values and I will never be parted with it.

I am a musician and I spend a lot of time reviewing music. This means I'll be sitting at my computer, headphones on listening to a song and unaware of the outside world. My girl sunshine knows that when the phone rings, I'm supposed to answer it. So when it rings and I'm on the computer with the headphones on, she'll run up to me and "bark" in her way and jump on me to alert me to the phone. She'll then run ahead of me to the phone and watch me as I answer it. She'll also alert me when the doorbell rings or someone in the household yells for me. This she learned all on her own. Dumb dog? Who are they kidding! (to CBS, here's a major rasberry call just for you! thhhhhhhhhhhhh)
