Getting your b out of bed in the morning

Hi everyone,

Was just wondering how many people on the forum have trouble getting their B out of bed in the morning. Kaiser sleeps in his crate next to our bed and he just looks at me in the morning when I open the crate door(it is so funny to me as I expected him to be dying to get out of it), he goes to bed early and it is still hard to get him out at 8ish in the morning. Is he a normal B? Oh and is all that snoring normal!

Jolanda and Kaiser

First Basenji's

My dog will sleep as long as I do never wakes up any time specific.. could be 6 or even 11 am hahah she loves to sleep!

I gave up getting Basenjis out of bed after my first one. At that time I was living at home with my parents and needed to walk her before I went to work. I would pick her up out of her bed and she would vocalize in a high pitched snarl as I carried her to the kitchen for her breakfast. She used to go back to bed after her walk. I would phone my Mom from work to ask when the dog finally got up! (usually after 9 a.m.)

All my subsequent Bs have arisen when it suits them, usually 1/2 to 1 hour after I am up (or if they smell food!) 🙂

Franie would sleep all day… C-Me will linger in her crate (after I open the crate doors) and then slowly make her way out.... then she goes and tries to get Franie to get up...gggg Franie is not impressed... but C-Me knows that it will be breakfast time if they both get their butts out of bed. Now the pup, Akila (will be going to her new Mom's on Saturday), she bounces right out ready to take on the world... and rudely gets in both C-Me and Franie's faces... which then leads to a "correction" session! Then everyone is up...

Becca and Tucker stay in bed until they hear hubby or I in the kitchen making lunch for the day or breakfast. Then they must race down the stairs to make sure nothing has fallen on the floor for them to clean up. They are so considerate. Weekends they will stay in bed until we get up and make them get out of bed. I can't trust Tucker to stay in bed without supervision….....he eats pillows!!!

Usually I wake up and the first thing I see is Oakley staring at me with ears perked. Sometimes I'll even awake to see him sitting in the next room staring at me to get the h*ll up and give him breakfast!!!! There are times it's amusing and comedic, othertimes not so much!

When you get to be my age and have gone up to go to work at 5am for years and years… and being older (way old..LOL).... you get up early.. every day..... My kids are used to that... so there is not such thing as sleeping in... my "clock" doesn't work that way.... sigh!

Are we talking winter or summer? of course the boyz (aged 15 and 16) are eager to sleep in, but Zest! (6) is happy to sleep in if it's winter, but ready to go in the summer months. And are there really people with basenjis who sleep in crates??? really??? I'd love to be able to stretch out in my bed.

Agilebasenji my Kaiser seems to be loving his crate more and more, he gets fed in it and when we go out he always has treats in it and it is also used for time out on occasion. It is summer here now so will be interesting to see what happens in winter. I love animals in bed with me but we already have the cats in ours so he missed out, there just isn't enough space.

Sounds all normal to me. Our 2 sisters will sleep until we get up and start making noise. In winter, when it's dark, they are not in a hurry. In summer, they are usually up a little earlier. I feed them when the wake, and that helps them to get up!
They do snore, especially when one of their nostrils is closed off by a pillow or something.

This morning was typical for me. I got up at six thirty, came downstairs and set Perry's dehydrated food to soak. Off to the barn to feed horses, then back in and checked my email and the forums. Was just reading this thread when I heard a "thump" as his feet hit the floor (yeah, he sleeps in my bed), and downstairs he comes. I put him out for his morning pee, and then gave him breakfast. He has now finished his meal and is ensconced in the rocking chair having his "bath", just like a cat. 🙂

In my experience, if the weather is off, Basenjis won't be anxious to get out of bed. Particularly if they can hear rain on the roof! 😉

Seriously… there are. I always made sure my babies first learned to sleep in their crates, then as they got older would start sleeping in bed. Franie and C-Me seem to prefer their crates. If they are in bed they get up and just go in their crates.... When my elders were with me, I thought that maybe I should try the crate for some more room!

I officially HATE the first five posters and a few of the rest. WTH? SLEEP IN? You all just got together and made this crap up right? SLEEP IN? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

My life since my first B has been dogs with some freakish internal clock and if I am not up at that time they will
run up and down my body
dump the trash or knock things over
run to the door and hit it
POKE POKE POKE me with their feet

SLEEP IN?

Yeah, if the window is open (like today) and it is bloody raining, they don't wake me up. And I don't care if I take them out at 2 am, they are up by 8 and that's it.

You all are just mean. Should have held this thread off til April first so I could REALLY believe it is made up. Did I mention I hate all of you?

Debra, if it makes you feel any better, my neighbour's Rottweiler gets her up at 4:30 a.m. on weekends, the only chance she has to sleep in. (she has to rise that early weekdays to do chores before work).

Maybe you can get a CD of rainfall to play in the mornings? 🙂

Heh, I had to deal with the early mornings when Kananga was still a puppy. It wasn't until he was around 1.5-2yrs where he calmed down and started sleeping in. Now he gives me a displeased look when it's time to get up. I know he wants to sleep as late as possible.

I honestly think the only motivation for him in the mornings is his food and an opportunity to follow me around before I leave for the day. Otherwise he will sleep.

I can totally relate to you, our B's don't know the meaning of sleep, they are up all through the night just to go for a stroll around the house or bounce of the couch when chasing each other. Sleeping in never, I mean NEVER, happens in our house, mind you they are only 1 and 2 years old so loads and loads of energy still…...but still sleeping in would be wonderful, just once a week would be nice........and yes they have no problem trampling us in the night as they do the B 500 around the house..lol

We were spoiled with just Loki. After about 6 months or so he loved to sleep in. Kaia though, she's up bright an early and then pesters him until he gets up to play with her. He is not amused 🙂

LOL…. exactly what the last pup still with me is doing to Franie... and she is really NOT amused. But she leaves Saturday. I have not told her (or C-Me) that Karly will be coming for a sleep over the following Friday!

well, that was my plan when I got Zest! but you know the saying about the best laid plans of mice and men . . .
I picked her up in late March or early April and we were doing great with her sleeping in her crate (er, okay, we were doing okay, but she'd wake up early). Until we had a late blizzard and it wiped out power for about a day and a half. So when we went to bed that night, I covered the boyz, but knew Z would freeze in her crate (hadn't had power since early morning sometime) and there was no way she would stay covered up all night. So she had to sleep in the bed and after that she was NOT NOT NOT going back to that crate. <sigh>She slept late and woke up with a very self-satisfied smile on her face. Had the same look that Scarlett O'Hara had after Rhett Bulter carried her up the staircase.

Actually she did okay in the crate when she was in season, thankfully.</sigh>

Debra-
in my experience, nothing trains a basenji to sleep late in the morning like cold weather.
