@Baxterandbailey – my 12yo male just went through something very similar and he too had diarrhea issues with the rimadyl. He actually had better relief from prednisone than the rimadyl/tramadol combo. He had a sensitive tummy too and does well on Wellness Senior. Also for his stiffness and arthritis, (this may sound crazy) I use a dog-sized dose of horse vitamins my mom uses for her Arabian mares. I just mix it in his food and he loves it. It's called For-a-Flex Joint Support. It is pricey, but it'll last a long time for a dog vs a horse lol.

A Canadian company that produces cat and dog food is recalling over 80 brands. Some pet owners have noted that their cats and dogs have been vomiting and suffered kidney failure.
Ten of the pets have died, and while manufacturer Menu Foods is not sure what happened, but they are saying that the recall is limited to the "cuts and gravy" style foods. 1010WINS says that products all used wheat gluten from a new supplier. Hmm.
Menu Foods sells food to stores like Safeway, Wal-Mart and PetSmart (some of whom sell it under a private label); you can see a list of the products and product codes at Menu Foods' website. It also makes food for Proctor & Gamble, who announced a recall of Iams and Eukanuba canned and foil pouch foods.

To read can product codes, refer to the bottom of the can. The first four numbers of the second line of numbers are the date code, and the following four numbers indicate the plant code. For example, if the second line begins with four numbers from 6339 to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, then the can should be recalled. For foil pouches, the code numbers are located at the lower left hand corner on the back of the pouch. The date and plant codes appear in the third group of numbers, beginning an 11-digit sequence. Dry dog food was not recalled, that is why you don't see the same cods…. only wet that is canned or in a foil pouch.... and only the kind that is chunky in gravy... Iams and Euk are not even on the list of ones recalled...
However as I posted on a different thread, I don't use anything with corn in it.. it is just a filler and has no useful properties for dogs... many Basenjis have allergies to corn.... Try a good quality food without corn, Canidea, California Natural are just a couple

I would like to believe that this is not deliberate, but what other explanation could there be?? Even if there is a rat problem at the plant, how could the poison get into the products themselves?

OMG!!! These poor suffering loving pets and people who love them! This is an example of how this "world economy" is a mistake. The poison is illegal to use in the United States. So they use it in China and send the products on which the poison was used to the States? I wonder if this product from China has been sent to other countries. Shouldn't there be "global" Food & Drug laws? :mad: If not, this could be the 1st recipe for disaster! How are we going to make sure the food products we buy are not tainted by unsafe agricultural and processing methods off shore? We need some kind of regulated enforcement to test imported food products.

In many parts of the world, rat poison is used in the fields and in the storage facilities to control the rats. It's not so much "world economy", but world politics. The US and Canada have higher standards that much of the world, and the pet food industry is an unregulated industry. That's why, we, as the consumers, should be demanding the same laws and standards for our pets as we do for ourselves.

Any news of if the dog food companies will be paying vet bills? I only heard on the news that they ask consumers to save receipts. They better be paying for this!

Now Alpo wet food is also recalled. I had friends of mine come over this weekend and to show there support, they brought our B some food. Unfortunantly it was nutra so I told them thanks but it's been recalled. They say the food was bought last year for their dog and it was left over. Well won't take a chance with the brand either way. But now this whole Alpo thing too. I worry that the food we're giving our B will be recalled also. Thinking of going for some natural homecooked food until this whole mess is fixed.

CINCINNATI, July 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ –The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) (NYSE: PG) is voluntarily expanding its recall to include veterinary and some specialized dry pet food as a precautionary measure because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. No salmonella-related illnesses have been reported.

These products are made in a single, specialized facility. In cooperation with FDA, P&G determined that some products made at this facility have the potential for salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made at this facility.
Consumers who have purchased the specific dry pet foods listed should discard them. People handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
