here's some info about the iams recal

This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop using the affected products immediately, and consult with a veterinarian if any symptoms are present in their pet. All Iams and Eukanuba products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled products. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-882-1591 or visit www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for details.

To read can product codes, refer to the bottom of the can. The first four numbers of the second line of numbers are the date code, and the following four numbers indicate the plant code. For example, if the second line begins with four numbers from 6339 to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, then the can should be recalled. For foil pouches, the code numbers are located at the lower left hand corner on the back of the pouch. The date and plant codes appear in the third group of numbers, beginning an 11-digit sequence. See www.Iams.com and www.Eukanuba.com for illustrated details.

  • I must be slow but I don't know what number to look for in the dry foil bag…gues it's best to just throw it away..best to be safe then sorry

  • Lower left hand corner on back of pouch. Usually the very bottom

  • thanks..he number is 70174177-I do think this is part of the recall batch..can't believe it I'm just glad this was a new bag and my B didn't eat much of it

  • Although the plant code dosen't match the last numbers do.

  • Dry dog food was not recalled, that is why you don't see the same cods…. only wet that is canned or in a foil pouch.... and only the kind that is chunky in gravy... Iams and Euk are not even on the list of ones recalled...

However as I posted on a different thread, I don't use anything with corn in it.. it is just a filler and has no useful properties for dogs... many Basenjis have allergies to corn.... Try a good quality food without corn, Canidea, California Natural are just a couple

  • yes since the scare we bought valley health food which does not have the by products and other garbage the iams has

  • I would like to believe that this is not deliberate, but what other explanation could there be?? Even if there is a rat problem at the plant, how could the poison get into the products themselves?

  • @jessi76:

    Rat poison…

    http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=2975912&page=1&US=true

OMG!!! These poor suffering loving pets and people who love them! This is an example of how this "world economy" is a mistake. The poison is illegal to use in the United States. So they use it in China and send the products on which the poison was used to the States? I wonder if this product from China has been sent to other countries. Shouldn't there be "global" Food & Drug laws? If not, this could be the 1st recipe for disaster! How are we going to make sure the food products we buy are not tainted by unsafe agricultural and processing methods off shore? We need some kind of regulated enforcement to test imported food products.

Darn! Now I'm all worked up!

  • In many parts of the world, rat poison is used in the fields and in the storage facilities to control the rats. It's not so much "world economy", but world politics. The US and Canada have higher standards that much of the world, and the pet food industry is an unregulated industry. That's why, we, as the consumers, should be demanding the same laws and standards for our pets as we do for ourselves.

  • Any news of if the dog food companies will be paying vet bills? I only heard on the news that they ask consumers to save receipts. They better be paying for this!

  • Now Alpo wet food is also recalled. I had friends of mine come over this weekend and to show there support, they brought our B some food. Unfortunantly it was nutra so I told them thanks but it's been recalled. They say the food was bought last year for their dog and it was left over. Well won't take a chance with the brand either way. But now this whole Alpo thing too. I worry that the food we're giving our B will be recalled also. Thinking of going for some natural homecooked food until this whole mess is fixed.

I tried to get to the bottom of it, but I didn't find much. I did find an article that said food prices in general may be rising due to El Niño, so that may be a factor. Also, an article about general consumer dissatisfaction with higher pet-food prices: http://www.petbusiness.com/January-2016/The-Cost-of-High-Prices/ And, stats from last year that show that pet food prices fell to a fairly low point in August 2015 (which may explain why they're going back up now): http://www.petbusinessprofessor.com/petmarket/buying-pet-products-price-matters-petflation-update-and-more/

i stay with the same brand, good quality kibble. thats all Hope gets with maybe a raw bone and/or bits of left over meat (such as chicken) and pumpkin to have in the evening. when i was working in a grooming salon she used to get other premium kibble (samples for our customers) as "treats" - she was none the wiser and thought "yummo!" hehe and never had issues with it :) also -when we have fostered dogs she has had some of their kibble and had no issues with eating it. im pretty lucky i dont have a fussy eater :)

I was feeding my Basenji brand blue and she started getting crystals in her kidneys. With the recommendation from my pet store owner (Pet Ranch), switched to Nature's Variety Instinct RAW. Withing 2 months…all crystals are gone. Now Basenji, Rotty, and Puppy Mastiff/Pitt all get Nature's Variety. Their coats are very shiney and teeth are so white.

I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

@agilebasenji: To clarify, I'm not feeding my dogs differently because they are show/performance dogs; I'm feeding them differently because that is what works for the individual. Where I see feeding a dog differently because it is a performance/working dog (NOT a conformation/show dog) is where the dog is burning TONS of calories. Examples would be a working border collie/kepie or, perhaps, a greyhound that is being run many times a week (I don't know how they work things at the track), a working military/border patrol dog that is logging in miles of work daily, etc. My performance/show dogs are more weekend warriors by comparison. Training less than an hour everyday (not that I really train 7 days a week), hardly needs a special diet (IMHO). I will say I feed the basenjis more in the winter than the summer; they need more calories when it's cold. I also cook an egg on show/agility/coursing mornings, but that's because Digital is a picky boy and I need him to having something in his tummy when he's performing in agility/coursing. And it has just sort of carried over even though Miss Zest would never turn down food of any sort. Of course that's not too different from most weekends since I usually cook a big breakfast on Sat and Sun and everyone gets a bite of egg then. However, I will say I know of some people who do feed their current show dogs a better diet than the non-show dogs, which I find very sad. Well put, especially your last comment… I totally agree.... and pets/companions deserve the best we can feed them... no different then show/performace dogs...

lvoss: "I highly recommend a long walk with the dogs while the food cools because mine are constantly asking, "Is it done yet? Are you sure it isn't done yet? I think it might be done." I don't have to be "cooking" anything for Gossy - she jumps around asking those same questions when I'm making anything - even when it's "my" food. :)
