First, the state:
The state flower and the state tree are the same species.
Over half of the battles fought in the Civil war occurred in this state.
The US Government is the single largest employer in this state with 25% of the state's workers.
The famous words "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" were spoken in this state. (extra credit for naming the speaker)
Both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars officially ended here.
Now, the city:
This city is within the borders of a county, but is independent of any county.
The last Confederate shot of the Civil War was said to have been fired by a unit of soldiers from this city.
NCAA Division III holds both the football and basketball championships in this city.
