Throwing toys

Basenji Talk

  • Not sure if this is common with Basenjis (I have a feeling it is), but Kananga just loves to throw his toys around. He's not always focused on chewing his rawhides either. Sometimes he prefers to simply throw one around. I usually laugh until he throws something at me. It's funny what he finds entertaining though. He'll even launch a toy/bone from underneath him with his paw a few times before he settles down and chews on it. Probably the most entertaining for me is when he manages to throw a toy directly above him and the toy lands on him making him even more excited. It's fun to watch. :D

  • Chance does a strange kind of reverse fetch. He picks up the ball and throws it at me then I have to pick it up and hand it back to him. This will continue for a while until he gets bored and goes of to play with something else.

It is really funny when the Bs are trying to kill a stuffed toy by shaking it violently and all of a sudden they through it in the air and they don't know where it lands. LOL!!! :D

  • Brando is big on throwing his toys! :D:D And actually, he'll throw the ball for Aaliyah. I'll throw the ball, he'll fetch it, but then Aaliyah usually wants it when he's bringing it back to me…so he'll throw it for her. It is really cute! She won't throw it back to him (even though he is waiting and wagging his tail)...she runs with it and so a B500 ensues. :D:D

At Christmas time, Brando has a big Planet Dog gingerbread man that he LOVES to throw...thing with that is that he really flings it hard...he can be in the living room and hit you with it in the kitchen. The gingerbread man is a big hit around here. :D:D

  • Actually I take that back, me pretending my hand is a spider is probably the most entertaining reaction to get from my B. And the best part is it's cheap! :D

Otis does the same thing, throwing his toys or marrow bones (read rock hard missiles) way up in the air, over and over again, until he settles down to either chew on it or pass out. It is very cat like in my opinion, at least my three cats I have had through the years used to do that, the cat we have now even does it when she catches a mouse in the chicken coop, throws it into the air like she is playing with it, when it won't move anymore ('cause she done killed it!) she leaves it on our backdoor stoop…thanks!!
That is the one thing, on top of cleaning themselves like cats, that makes B's very cat like. IMO.

Medjai does the same reverse fetch. Usually he'll roll the ball over to me with his nose. It would be horribly cruel, but I think he'd love to have his own pet hamster with a hamster ball, but I have gotten him the electric wiggle balls before. $26 and 3 days later, I'll just stick to the cheapest toys I can find that are made acceptably to me. He has so many toys and just doesn't like playing with the old ones except for when I get him a new one.

  • Keoki LOVES throw stuffed animals and then chase them. It's so funny to watch.

Tillo loves this as well, but I think he does it to make clear to me it's time to play some tug of war :D

  • This is all making me very jealous of you lucky owners!

    Some really great stories,

    Alan

  • Mine have all done the toy toss when pretending the toy is prey - violently shaking it then toss it in the air. Gossy is the only one though who has ever brought her toy to me to toss for her - and then only for a few times - I guess I don't toss it correctly :)

  • Medjai did that with a beanie babie, but when told to "be nice" he puts it down, picks it up nicely from the back and carries it off to his bed as if it were a puppy. He's never been the slightest bit rough with any live puppies we've met, so I'm happy he knows the difference from stuffed animal and real puppy.

  • So cool to read al the story's!

We sometimes need a helmet when they "trow" their heavy toys… hahahaha
They love it to trow with their toys and can play by themselfes for minuts..
Sometimes they yodel when a toy land on our head, or on another of the dogs... hahahaha

Hi there -- not sure if everyone uses this strategy but i soak some kibble in water and mix in a little peanut butter (so that simba isn't getting too much salt) and then stuff the Kong with that before freezing -- lasts longer and still has the same nutrients as his meals. We have the puppy and the classic and I think they're effectively the same. He also LOVES the blue kong squeaky ball. @schmerla

I see your post was back in Jan. so I hope you have your new basenji settled in. I also adopted a beasenji in Jan. She is my second. I adopted a 5 year old to be with my 3 yr. old, who had had 2 litters in the past and was bred for a 3rd one, but didn’t get pregnant. So the breeder, the same breeder our boy came from, decided to let her go to a forever home. I had to wait quite a while for her to be ready and I felt just like you. I couldn’t wait! I kept texting the breeder questions, request for photos, etc. When we picked her up she seemed comfortable with us right from the start. She has been a wonderful addition to our family, a good match for our 3yr. old boy. He’s a toughie but I think he’s met his match with her. He’s so much happier with his own friend. They love to be together. I hope your new pup is adjusting just as well as mine. Have fun. I think they make us laugh every day. Yes, you have to be on your toes with these guys, you have to make them a big part of your life. They can never just be a fixture. They are work but it’s worth it all. 3 years ago I was a newbie but not anymore, and I’m loving this wild ride.

Kaiser doesn't really have any except his game of steal the humans clothes or whatever mum forgets and leaves in his reach, I know he has something because of the wooden floors as I can hear his prancing around sound, does love his kong ball which has a hole in it which I stuff with freeze dried tripe which when he can't be bothered getting it out plays " here human get it out for me" and bugs us with it until we relent, bugging the cat is a game he likes but doesn't last long as the cat has other ideas. So far Shaye's favorites are the "no stuffing" animals with squeaky toys at each end - she has a squirrel and a beaver - she runs around squeaking them - strange thing, when her puppy teeth were out and she was getting her big teeth, for a while she had trouble making them squeak and she would toss them in the air and drag them around running full-out, then jump on them and try to get them to squeak again. She also has a set of hard plastic keys on a ring that she enjoys tossing and chasing (and getting us to toss for her of course. Her favorite game - reverse fetch.

@YodelDogs: Raw soup bones from the grocery store. I have the "butcher" cut them into 1 1/2 inch lengths so they are too large to crack open and small enough for the dog to get all the marrow out. After they have been licked and chewed up and are smelling "funky", I boil them which sterilizes them. They can then be kept "forever". Mine also lone the hard Nylabones, preferably the dinosaur shaped ones. The poor things get decapitated rather quickly though. :p Too funny! These two things, soup bones and dino bones, are the only things that my two B's LOVE! I would also add the Galileo bone made by Nylabones is super sturdy too. :)

:) For the most part the only toys that hold up in my house are kongs, the "plush" toys made for dogs who destroy do last for a few weeks, but thats about it. I get the "mean kitty" and "mad cow" dolls for them every so often, and there are these wabba toys that you can get that are made from recycled firehose material. They all have fun chewing and chasing these toys. I have a couple of "tough dog" toys that are sorta like fabric frisbees, that have lasted for almost a year! the squeekers have since died in both of them, but the pups still like to tug them around, and have me throw them. I keep a lot of recreational bones and such available in the house, and some cow hooves which take them awhile to chew on. But its hard to find good bones for them because they can not be beef. If I get them without any marrow, or any meaty material than we can have them, but otherwise we have to steer clear because my Masi is allergic to beef. So when I get marrow bones, I actually take all the marrow out, and wash the bones before they get them. It's sorta sad really, she loves them so much! kim~
