Throwing toys

Basenji Talk
  • Actually I take that back, me pretending my hand is a spider is probably the most entertaining reaction to get from my B. And the best part is it's cheap! :D

  • Otis does the same thing, throwing his toys or marrow bones (read rock hard missiles) way up in the air, over and over again, until he settles down to either chew on it or pass out. It is very cat like in my opinion, at least my three cats I have had through the years used to do that, the cat we have now even does it when she catches a mouse in the chicken coop, throws it into the air like she is playing with it, when it won't move anymore ('cause she done killed it!) she leaves it on our backdoor stoop…thanks!!
That is the one thing, on top of cleaning themselves like cats, that makes B's very cat like. IMO.

  • Chance does a strange kind of reverse fetch. He picks up the ball and throws it at me then I have to pick it up and hand it back to him. This will continue for a while until he gets bored and goes of to play with something else.

Medjai does the same reverse fetch. Usually he'll roll the ball over to me with his nose. It would be horribly cruel, but I think he'd love to have his own pet hamster with a hamster ball, but I have gotten him the electric wiggle balls before. $26 and 3 days later, I'll just stick to the cheapest toys I can find that are made acceptably to me. He has so many toys and just doesn't like playing with the old ones except for when I get him a new one.

  • Keoki LOVES throw stuffed animals and then chase them. It's so funny to watch.

Tillo loves this as well, but I think he does it to make clear to me it's time to play some tug of war :D

  • This is all making me very jealous of you lucky owners!

    Some really great stories,

    Alan

  • Mine have all done the toy toss when pretending the toy is prey - violently shaking it then toss it in the air. Gossy is the only one though who has ever brought her toy to me to toss for her - and then only for a few times - I guess I don't toss it correctly :)

  • Medjai did that with a beanie babie, but when told to "be nice" he puts it down, picks it up nicely from the back and carries it off to his bed as if it were a puppy. He's never been the slightest bit rough with any live puppies we've met, so I'm happy he knows the difference from stuffed animal and real puppy.

  • So cool to read al the story's!

We sometimes need a helmet when they "trow" their heavy toys… hahahaha
They love it to trow with their toys and can play by themselfes for minuts..

Oatmeal in the ground beef will be great, did you find 'satin balls' here, if not I have the recipe. Rich, but if a dog tolerates it they will gain weight!

That's actually what I thought about when I saw it and I thought it would be good practice for coursing, or at least if nothing else it should help with conditioning.

My husband and I went to a Rays baseball game several weeks ago where he actually caught a foul ball! Well we brought the ball home and he was so proud (never caught a ball before) but guess who has had her eyes on it since it came into the house. You guessed it little Ms. Trixie. He had it showing our kids and she actually jumped up onto his lap and tried to take it. We of course have since went out and bought her (I know spoiled rotten) her own baseball and she loves it!

The B I am fostering came with a de-stuffed…um...thing (I really couldn't tell you what it once was). When she doesn't get her way she will BAROOOOOO at us as loud as she can and then grab the stuffy and shake, shake, shake it and throw it in our general direction. If she could say "so there', I know she would.

@YodelDogs: Raw soup bones from the grocery store. I have the "butcher" cut them into 1 1/2 inch lengths so they are too large to crack open and small enough for the dog to get all the marrow out. After they have been licked and chewed up and are smelling "funky", I boil them which sterilizes them. They can then be kept "forever". Mine also lone the hard Nylabones, preferably the dinosaur shaped ones. The poor things get decapitated rather quickly though. :p Too funny! These two things, soup bones and dino bones, are the only things that my two B's LOVE! I would also add the Galileo bone made by Nylabones is super sturdy too. :)

:) For the most part the only toys that hold up in my house are kongs, the "plush" toys made for dogs who destroy do last for a few weeks, but thats about it. I get the "mean kitty" and "mad cow" dolls for them every so often, and there are these wabba toys that you can get that are made from recycled firehose material. They all have fun chewing and chasing these toys. I have a couple of "tough dog" toys that are sorta like fabric frisbees, that have lasted for almost a year! the squeekers have since died in both of them, but the pups still like to tug them around, and have me throw them. I keep a lot of recreational bones and such available in the house, and some cow hooves which take them awhile to chew on. But its hard to find good bones for them because they can not be beef. If I get them without any marrow, or any meaty material than we can have them, but otherwise we have to steer clear because my Masi is allergic to beef. So when I get marrow bones, I actually take all the marrow out, and wash the bones before they get them. It's sorta sad really, she loves them so much! kim~
