Bomb-sniffiing basenjis

  • @agilebasenji:

If you take the quiz, there are even more Kaden pics.

    Ah yes, video as well.

I love the coloring. Haven't seen very many basenjis with that type. It's like a tri but with heavy brindle coloring in place of the red.

  • We are all the smart ones for having the smart great little B's that all of us have in our lives and hearts. I hope that maybe before everyone run's out and get's one now because it was in the news they will learn more about them. There health and the way they can act and often do. I may not want them to find a missing person what if I wanted to send my hubby away. Just joking I am so proud of our little girl.

  • What a lovely story but I was a bit dismayed at the statement that he was culled from a litter at 7 days old because of his unusual sociability with humans! Could they have meant 7 weeks? In any case doesn't sound right.

I was wondering about that also:confused:

  • I am sure they meant 7 weeks, not 7 days…

  • Wouldn't a human-social basenji be preferred? Seems odd it would be rejected like that.

  • I think the story meant it was "chosen" for its sociability not "culled". (You'd think journalists would have a better handle on vocabulary) Great story anyway.

They meant chosen. Jeff visited the litter many, many times as the litter was growing and Kaden had everything he was looking for in a working dog.

I know the breeder and saw the litter when they were about 11 weeks old. Of course Kaden was already in his new home by then. Jeff and Kaden live in my area so hopefully I'll actually get to meet them someday and watch Kaden work. :)

  • Lucky you - I'd love to see Kaden working

  • No fair Robyn. :)

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
