Heating seeking missile? or Basenji

Basenji Talk

  • Being the lazy person I am I only iron my clothes for work on the morning I need them right before I need them. So what I usually do is put a towel on the floor and iron on that. Until zoe moved in. My cold baby who will do anything to get warm. I iron a spot on my shirt she plops down on that spot. I push her away and iron another spot where she promply seeks and finds. So figuring out why she does this I iron a spot at the edge of the towel and she lays there till it cools off then its back to my warm clothes. It got to the point that when I pulled the iron out she was there waiting. I guess pulling and and putting away that ironing board is less effort now!

  • LOL… my Mickii would yodel when you took clothes out of the dryer and climb all over you to try and get in the basket.... If the basket was on the floor she would dive in while you were taking out the clothes.

  • That's really funny, and cute. Tayda and Lenny like to sit in hot clothes. I can not remember the last time I ironed anything so they are not aware of the heat seeking missile.

  • I occasionally iron something on my bed, and if I don't pick it right up a basenji wallows it immediately!

  • Lying any place that's warm - that's their goal in life - I caught Gossy curled up on the bathroom floor this winter and it only dawned on me later that she was lying over the heating duct that runs under the floor.

  • My 2 b's think I bring things our of the dryer as a TREAT for them!

  • I frequently catch our Basenji lying on the bathroom heat register after he's been outside, esp if he gets a little wet. It is like he knows he will be get 'blow-dried' there. I don't know why he hasn't discovered any of the other heat registers in the house, but that is the only one he uses.

    Smart pup though!

  • This has to be a Basenji trait - Shaye also waits for me to take clothes out of the dryer and plops right in on top of them. When I take her out and put her back away, it becomes a challenge for her to try to grab warm clothes out of the basket all the time I'm unloading the dryer. I have to fold clothes on top of the kitchen table or she's all over them.

  • When I was a kid we would pull the clothes out of the dryer and lay them on the dining room table before we put in the next load. We usually would go back and find our male happily curled up there in the clothes. Zoe also will dive in to my basket of warm clothes. So even after over 30 yrs Basenjis are still the same I have never had or seen another dog love heat soo much!

  • Kayah loves to lay on top of the heat vents….anywhere there's heat you can find your basenji!!

  • Okay this has to beat all – as I was pulling the laundry out of the dryer on Saturday, Gossy decided the warm clothes weren't good enough. She tried to climb INTO the dryer to get warm :D

  • On the weekends I keep the blinds up if its a sunny day. Being that I have both an East & West exposure with a glass curtain wall, there are plenty of spots for Kananga to sunbathe. He will literally move across the living room as the day goes by, moving with the sunlight. He's very happy on those days. :D

  • That is too funny. Ironing is enough of a bother without a basenji helping out!!

  • My Basenji, loved to be blow dried with the hairdryer on hot.
I think he thought the hoover would do the same job and used to get in my way sometimes. I once put the nozzle from the hoover onto him to see if he liked it. He didnt and showed his displeasure by attacking.
In his later years he enjoyed curling up on a hot water bottle with a Lion cover on.
He very cleverly used to pull the bottle of the settee when he required it refilling.

Hah. Kananga is terrified of the hairdryer. I'm surprised your B liked it.

  • LOL I often bring warm laundry up from the basement & fold it on the bed. When I dump the pile of warm clothes on the bed I am guaranteed to have 2 Basenjis in the middle of the pile.

Also, we just moved into a new house with heat registers on the floor. This is Jibini's FIRST encounter with such a thing; every other house we've been in had them on the ceiling. I was waiting to see how long it would take him to catch on….for about a week he persisted in his usual warmth-seeking behavior (cuddling with me on the couch). But on a particularly cold night he was walking by the living room heat register and he stopped in his tracks, did an about face and stood looking at the register in disbelief. Initially he kept standing & rotating so as to "warm" his whole body....then he curled up for a nap in front of the register.

    Silly dogs!!

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
