Maya Went To Her First Show!

Basenji Talk
  • Maya had her first proper day out at a show today. Not competing, obviously, as she's too young, but she attended "not for competition" to have a bit of experience of shows.

It was a busy show, held at an equestrian centre so first interesting experience - walking on the sandy surface  And there were a LOT of dogs and people there. Obviously, i expected little Maya to be a bit apprehensive, maybe a little bit nervous of all the dogs and people. Sticking around me and my other dogs, that would be perfectly normal…. But not my Maya!

She was saying hello to all the dogs (she LOVES St Bernards :D) and if the owners allowed it she even had a play with a few (she is now sand coloured on her white bits lol). And she kepts trying to get every person who went past her to talk to her - on her hind legs dancing infront of them! I dont think anyone could resist stopping and giving her some attention :D

We took the opportunity of having some ring practice in the proper show environment when one of the rings became empty. I stood her on the table (she stood beautifully) and then trotted her around the ring a few times... And i swear, all eyes around the ring were on my Maya as she strutted her stuff :p EVERYONE stopped to look at her when she was trotting around. And several people came over to ask about her and to tell me how gorgeous she is (Well, duh!!!lol) so that was really nice! And she even let a few of them have a cuddle!!

So all in all, first show experience was very positive for all of us. Maya is exhausted, flat out across the back of the sofa behind my neck lol Bless her!

  • Excellent!!! Congrats on yours & Maya's great experience! :D:D

I get to take my (now) 15wk pup to her first shows the 2nd week of April (as a visitor of course - 4 days of shows)…I can't wait. :)

  • Good to hear she had such a great time! Have you already got a real show planned for her?

  • It sounds like a great day for you both!

  • @Janneke:

Yes, her first show is in June, the day after she turns 6 months :D

Thanks for the replies! Little Maya is still fast asleep on the sofa

Good for Maya - she is a beautiful little girl - I'm sure she will do the breed proud in her shows.

We made the mistake of getting a cheap pen with horizontal wiring ($35). Then we got this as recommended by Michelle Lennon ($99). He can't get out of it, though for several weeks he could squeeze through. At 13 weeks, he's too big for that now. Regalo 192-Inch Super Wide Adjustable Baby Gate and Play Yard, 4-In-1, Bonus Kit, Includes 4 Pack of Wall Mounts Regato 192" gate I also recommend her "Dream Dog" course. I trained 9 years ago with a local pro, but this is more detailed and better organized. Takes a month for a person to get through the course, worth every penny. She also offers a lot of free content, and if you go to the "pro" level for another $75 per month, one can access three weekly zoom meetings with her and co. and get questions answered 24/7 via their facebook interface. For what one gets, it's a real bargain. I used it for a month and found it very helpful. How to Train a Dream Dog To be sure, I don't agree on every detail. For example, I do no-leash walks in woods; they don't recommend that. Also, her course is not really designed to train an active "outdoor" dog, but more for an "indoor" dog. She opposes electric fences and doggy doors. I've had great experiences for 9 years with both and will continue to use them (started electric fence training last week and making good progress). But otherwise, her course lays out solid foundation work. She trains you to be a puppy trainer and provides all the real-time help you could need. Happy training!

There's something invigorating about cold snow on little basenji toesies! My Abbey loved all the snow we had last winter (unusual for us) but she was terrified of the neighbors' snow man!!

I have a cat that will walk around in the rain, she likes it. But if it is thundering, she heads for her cat door in the garage, hates thunder. My Basenji, Sahara hates wet grass, but is better about getting a bath now that I give her a treat when we are done. We carried her out in the boat, with her lifepreserver on and she liked it Ok. She is getting better but won't go outside to potty when it is raining unless Mom goes with her on a leash and an umbrella. Hence, her name Africian Queen Sahara!!!!!!:D
