Maya Went To Her First Show!

Basenji Talk
  • Maya had her first proper day out at a show today. Not competing, obviously, as she's too young, but she attended "not for competition" to have a bit of experience of shows.

It was a busy show, held at an equestrian centre so first interesting experience - walking on the sandy surface  And there were a LOT of dogs and people there. Obviously, i expected little Maya to be a bit apprehensive, maybe a little bit nervous of all the dogs and people. Sticking around me and my other dogs, that would be perfectly normal…. But not my Maya!

She was saying hello to all the dogs (she LOVES St Bernards :D) and if the owners allowed it she even had a play with a few (she is now sand coloured on her white bits lol). And she kepts trying to get every person who went past her to talk to her - on her hind legs dancing infront of them! I dont think anyone could resist stopping and giving her some attention :D

We took the opportunity of having some ring practice in the proper show environment when one of the rings became empty. I stood her on the table (she stood beautifully) and then trotted her around the ring a few times... And i swear, all eyes around the ring were on my Maya as she strutted her stuff :p EVERYONE stopped to look at her when she was trotting around. And several people came over to ask about her and to tell me how gorgeous she is (Well, duh!!!lol) so that was really nice! And she even let a few of them have a cuddle!!

So all in all, first show experience was very positive for all of us. Maya is exhausted, flat out across the back of the sofa behind my neck lol Bless her!

  • Excellent!!! Congrats on yours & Maya's great experience! :D:D

I get to take my (now) 15wk pup to her first shows the 2nd week of April (as a visitor of course - 4 days of shows)…I can't wait. :)

  • Good to hear she had such a great time! Have you already got a real show planned for her?

  • It sounds like a great day for you both!

Yes, her first show is in June, the day after she turns 6 months :D

Thanks for the replies! Little Maya is still fast asleep on the sofa

Good for Maya - she is a beautiful little girl - I'm sure she will do the breed proud in her shows.

Yeah, after the first two, breed and group I was starting to think we had a chance, I thought , if he keeps this up…... But of course.. It was funny, he just would not stand still , I kept having to get up and do a turn and return to position and he would be ok and then just when the judge was passing by.... Again..... Of course it didn't help that it was on grass, and there were ants! They kept biting his legs and he kept jumping up and I had to take them off of him and move to avoid them... It was horrible. There are always ants Herr when its on grass!!!!

There's something invigorating about cold snow on little basenji toesies! My Abbey loved all the snow we had last winter (unusual for us) but she was terrified of the neighbors' snow man!!

@MacPack: They are all probably teething! And the best things for teething are phones, glasses, purses…well, you get the idea. What excuse can I use for my 11 year old who still takes my wallet out of my purse (dumb human, left it on the table again) and eats it? My B is over a year old now. I got him when he was just under 8 months old. He behaved best while he was still a puppy. Seems backwards. For some reason I believe he's starting to develop more of a separation anxiety. Which seems odd because he has always been fine before. Nothing changed.

@Duke: I am curious if anyone knows … In Africa how many B's is or was in a normal size pack? I found this, very interesting indeed Jill. http://www.basenjicompanions.org/articles/zaire.html Basenjis were everywhere. In an average native village of about 120 people, there would be about 50 Basenjis roaming loose on the farms of the village. An average farming/hunting family might have 8 to 12 Basenjis living with them in a small pack. Ann said there were never any serious fights. There was a fair amount of jostling and jockeying for rank, which was carried out by growling and stiff-legged dominance displays. A good deal of shoving and body-slamming occurred, but they mostly seemed to settle in to their places within the pack, which was usually headed by a strong, alpha male. Ann speculated that the lack of fighting may have been because they were all loose and were not crowding each other. Occasionally, a minor scrap would break out over food, with the tidbit usually being grabbed by a third Basenji who was not in the fray. Males mated with many females; there was no paired mating behavior.

ROFL ROFL LOL LOL LOL LOL…this is the FUNNIEST story I've ever heard in my life!!! LOL LOL :) Hahaha! I must say that Storm was quite disappointed to see that my "treasure" was a twig - I think he was hoping for a squirrel or a bunny or something a little more animated! ;) :) :D And my neighbors are NOT dog people, sooooo you know darn well they think I ought to be in a straight jacket! :)
