First Snow

Basenji Talk
  • We're supposed to get our first snow tomorrow… It will be the first time I see Miles in snow. And today was the first day he came in shivering after our walk. I can't help but say I thought it was darling! Looks like I'll have to get him a Man Coat after all!! YES!!

  • Hey Jazzysmom…
Did you have any or much of that terrible weather???

  • We haven't had the storms that the midwest has had… But it'll be interesting to see what today brings... let me check the forecast... please hold...

this just in... 1-3 inches accumulation expected; 90% chance of snow. SWEET!
Is 28, feels like 28. High today, 33. Buuuuurrrrrr!!

  • We got 3-4 inches of snow last night, amazingly Nexa and Leo liked it when I took them out this morning! They both stood in the sun room with this bewildered look, wondering what this white stuff is…hopefully, they’re this accepting all winter:)

  • When it first snows here in MN the b's in my house run out and then right back in looking at me - "I'll do my business when this goes away." Sometimes they have to go in and out a LOT before they finally figure out - nothings going to change.

Even thought I have a patio and the wood deck for them - that I shovel off - they HAVE to plow through belly deep snow to get to 'their' spot. Sometimes if it gets really cold - I'll have to go out and carry one of the old dogs back as he gets so cold he won't move but just sits and cries.

Ah the perils of the African dog in a Minnesota winter.

  • We got a foot of snow! :D

  • most times the snow itself is not an issue for my dogs - it's when there is that bone chilling cold that really does them in.

  • Well,,,,,,we got our first snow of the winter here in southeastern ohio and I was very happy to find that the furbabies LOVE the snow! In fact today the temp was milder than yesterday so the "kids" stayed out quite a bit playing with each other then the neighbors lab. It was sooooooooo funny,,,,,,,they were running when one of them discovered a hump in the snow. Soon all three were trying to figure out what it was. They quickly realized it was one of their toys that we hadnt got to bring in before the snow and they acted like it was a buried treasure they way got excited!!! They chased each other around for at least 45 minutes taking turns in the lead with their "treasure"! I was a little worried about how long I should let them out in the snow – worried about their little paws. Anyone know how long is to long or will they let me know like usual when they have had enough of outside?

  • Here are some pics we took the other day in the snow…

    Miles is really fast…

    See… Look how fast!

But the two of them totally enjoyed romping around.

    Miles with his Daddy.

He likes to go under all the trees.

PooPoo apparently does not like the snow as much. Either that- or she hates that coat, "It's not doing anything for [her]."

    Oh, my kids!

  • OH NO!! What is Lexi so upset about?? I've never seen her pretty teeth :D LOL!

There's something invigorating about cold snow on little basenji toesies! My Abbey loved all the snow we had last winter (unusual for us) but she was terrified of the neighbors' snow man!!

I need to say thank you to Andrea, Pat & Lisa…the info here and in the "Zoni" thread has been a huge help. I am now 100% sure that Brando is telling Liyah to SHUT UP...and it seems to be working :D:D:D. So far I have a really good sleeper - one night she cried for a half hour, but 2 of the nights she has slept right thru. Much of that credit is going to Ruby & Brando. In the morning and evening, they have been have really funny B500s with the puppy...sometimes she is the chaser and sometimes she is the one being chased. It is hilarious when she is being chased by them. :D:D Brando has been much better with her I'd say. The thing that Lisa said about one of her dogs wanting the puppy around on his own terms is exactly what is going on. She is finally giving him some respect when he starts to growl at her telling her to get away. Sometimes she ignores the cue and then he lets her know in no uncertain terms...he did it yesterday and she cried because she was scared at first, but then she actually stood up to him, standing on her hind legs and growling back at him :eek::eek:. When she did that, Brando stopped growling and just walked away. A couple of times he's growled at her to back away, and if she doesn't go far enough away, he will follow after her until she gets to where he wants her to be. She definitely gets what he is saying then :D. Brando is now coming up on the couch if the puppy is up there. I spend a lot of time petting him with the puppy around so that he still sees he'll get attention if he is near me. Also, if Liyah goes to sleep during the day, I'll move away from her (so she is on her own) and spend time with Ruby and Brando together, or separately. This whole interaction/dog language is fascinating to watch. The corrections that Ruby gives her are really interesting. Ruby is super patient but when the biting is too much she just stands there and turns her head away from her and stops the play. As well, if Liyah is really going after Ruby and she wants to rest, she has put Liyah on her side with her mouth around her neck and growled...Brando has done the same thing. One time when Brando really growled at Liyah, Ruby got up and stood between Liyah and Brando :D:D:D. Oh, and we got a foot of snow here (Maine) yesterday and Liyah had a blast running around in it. She is such a brave and adventurous little kid. I know it is cold out, but I figure the more she gets used to it here as a pup, the less issue I'll have with her as an adult in bad weather. So far she has been out when it is raining and when it is snowing...just one more adventure. I'm trying to give her a bunch of new experiences every day. Things feel like they are going so well...:D:D:D

Our Sally Loves it. She runs around like a chicken with her head cut off. It really is cute! She even rides the snow-mobile, or sled with the boys.

ROFL ROFL LOL LOL LOL LOL…this is the FUNNIEST story I've ever heard in my life!!! LOL LOL :) Hahaha! I must say that Storm was quite disappointed to see that my "treasure" was a twig - I think he was hoping for a squirrel or a bunny or something a little more animated! ;) :) :D And my neighbors are NOT dog people, sooooo you know darn well they think I ought to be in a straight jacket! :)

@nala121498: In my experience, most dogs get frisky with the wind and snow! Good observation Nala. It is very windy and cold right now. Flurrys are flying and Duke was just outside skipping about with a frisby. He ran back and forth flipping a frisby having a great time. He wanted me to give it a toss, but it is too windy to give it a good whirling toss. So off he went again. He's very frisky. Though snow is pretty, I'm not crazy for it, but I have to say I can't wait to have enough to see Duke play in it. :)
